Make Peace, Not War
Author: BobR    Date: 01/25/2008 13:21:39

It's been said by numerous experts that the solution for peace in Iraq is a diplomatic one, not a military one. Peace cannot be created at the barrel of a gun. Considering our track record in Iraq, however, the United States cannot be the agent of diplomacy, because we are not trusted there (for that matter - we're not known for waging peace, at least not with this president). Many experts have suggested it will require the intervention of Iran and Syria to bring the Sunnis and the Shia to the table together.

It appears that half of that is happening. Apparently, Ahmadinejad May Visit Iraq:
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has accepted an invitation to visit Iraq, but no date has been set, the Foreign Ministry announced here Jan. 23. It would be the first visit to Iraq by a top Iranian leader.

Deputy Foreign Minister Labeed Abawi said the invitation to the Iranian leader was extended by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd who has close relations with Iran's ruling clergy.

....

Many of Iraq's senior Shiite politicians had lived in exile in Iran during the 35-year rule of Saddam's Baath party and continue to maintain ties to Iran's leadership.

....

Iran says that, like the United States, it would like to see a stable and democratic Iraq.

Hopefully, this will be the first step towards peace. Perhaps, however, he should wait until Blackwater is out of Iraq. It may be coming sooner than you think, since Blackwater may lose its contracts there:
Regardless of the outcome of various legal proceedings against Blackwater, the controversial security firm potentially faces a massive business setback this coming May. That's when its State Department contract to protect U.S. diplomats in Iraq comes up for renewal, and its hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for the company are no longer a sure thing in light of the legal and political repercussions of two recent incidents in which Blackwater guards allegedly killed Iraqis.

A Washington, D.C., grand jury is currently hearing evidence involving one of the episodes. And if the U.S. were to bring criminal indictments against Blackwater personnel, many observers believe it could jeopardize the contract's renewal and further undermine the company's already shaky status in Iraq.

By now, everyone's heard that Dennis Kunicich has dropped out of the presidential race. He wants to focus on a congressional campaign so he can affect change as a Rep in the House. The two Articles of Impeachment are on everyone's mind; getting rid of Bush and Cheney might help with peace in the Middle East. Once we get a new president in the office next January, however, if might be Kucinich's lesser-known initiative to create a Cabinet-level U.S. Department of Peace that gets the job done...

All we are saying, is give the Department of Peace a chance....

(apologies to John Lennon, although I don't think he'd mind...)

Mornin' Everybody,

How I wish that Russell Feingold was the leader of the Senate rather than that spineless wonder Harry Reid. Here's a good piece from Sam Stein at HuffPoFeingold Says "I Really Do Disagree" With Reid on FISA, just to get you all fired up this morning.

Cheers,

Huckabee on the Fair Tax from last night...
You end the underground economy. Illegals, prostitutes, pimps, gamblers, drug dealers - everybody pays taxes.

So tell me, is Huck for legalizing these things???

Last night during the Republinut debate, I was so shit-faced by the time they got around to asking each other questions - I was yelling a few choice questions at the TV, questions like "are you all f*ckin' nuts?" "What are you talking about?" "You don't really mean that we should be in Iraq for 100 years? Nevermind, I know that you are quite sincere and that is exactly what scares the bejesus out of me..."

Oh well, I didn't have any trouble getting to sleep last night Staying asleep was an altogether other matter =(

Gay Activists Blast Radio Host Who Mocked Ledger's Death

A U.S. radio host who mocked Heath Ledger's death live on air a few hours after his passing has been slammed by gay activists. During his Tuesday show, Fox News Radio presenter John Gibson played an audio clip from the movie Brokeback Mountain in which Jake Gyllenhaal's character says to Ledger's, "I wish I knew how to quit you." Gibson then told his listeners, "Well, he found out how to quit you." Later in the broadcast, Gibson played another Brokeback Mountain clip, this time of Ledger's character saying, "We're dead." The host then mockingly repeated, "We're dead," before playing the clip again. Gibson, who is on record as criticizing Brokeback Mountain as a "gay agenda movie," went on to label Ledger a "weirdo" who had "a serious drug problem" and speculated as to reasons why the actor may have taken his own life. Ledger, who was found dead in his New York apartment on Tuesday, is not thought to have committed suicide, according to authorities and his family. Rashad Robinson, a spokesman for The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), says, "Gibson's remarks are vulgar and disgusting. It's sickening that Gibson would exploit Heath Ledger's tragic death to promote such hurtful intolerance. And to do so at a time when family and friends are grieving shows a level of insensitivity that is beyond the pale." On his Wednesday show, Gibson refused to apologize for his comments, explaining they were just "a little Brokeback Mountain joke" and there is "no point in passing up a good joke."

Barack Obama has a 13-point lead on rival Hillary Clinton but his support has eroded slightly on the eve of South Carolina's Democratic presidential primary, according to a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released on Friday.

Obama's edge on Clinton slipped by two points overnight but remained in double digits, 38 percent to 25 percent, in the rolling poll, with John Edwards gaining two points to climb to 21 percent and inch closer to second place.

As for the Republicans, their slow civil war continues. The primary race itself is winnowing down and clarifying: It is John McCain versus Mitt Romney, period. At the same time the conservative journalistic world is convulsed by recrimination and attack. They're throwing each other out of the party. Republicans have become very good at that. David Brooks damns Rush Limbaugh who knocks Bill Kristol who anathematizes whoever is to be anathematized this week. This Web site opposes that magazine.

The rage is due to many things. A world is ending, the old world of conservative meaning, and ascendancy. Loss leads to resentment. (See Clinton, Bill.) Different pundits back different candidates. Some opportunistically discover new virtues in candidates who appear at the moment to be winning. Some feel they cannot be fully frank about causes and effects.

Ontario - Danny Glover has been convicted in Niagara Falls, Ontario, for trespassing in a hotel during a union rally in 2006.

Glover, who wasn't in court, was convicted Thursday along with UNITE HERE union representative Alex Dagg and Ontario Federation of Labour President Wayne Samuelson.

Canadian Niagara Hotels charged the three with trespassing at their Sheraton on the Falls property during a Sept. 16, 2006, protest.

The 60-year-old actor took part in the protest as part of a larger campaign that aims to increase salaries and improve working conditions for hotel workers in the U.S. and Canada.

WTH?!?!

Immigration officials detaining, deporting American citizens

FLORENCE, Ariz. — Thomas Warziniack was born in Minnesota and grew up in Georgia, but immigration authorities pronounced him an illegal immigrant from Russia.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has held Warziniack for weeks in an Arizona detention facility with the aim of deporting him to a country he's never seen. His jailers shrugged off Warziniack's claims that he was an American citizen, even though they could have retrieved his Minnesota birth certificate in minutes and even though a Colorado court had concluded that he was a U.S. citizen a year before it shipped him to Arizona.

I am f*cked.

Exclusive: After Obama Complaints, CNN Bans James Carville And Paul Begala From Appearing As Analysts Until Dem Primary Is Settled

January 24, 2008 -- 7:11 PM EST // //

Okay, this is interesting. I've just learned that CNN has told top Dem strategists James Carville, Paul Begala, and Robert Zimmerman -- who are CNN mainstays but are all Hillary supporters -- that they will not be doing any more political analysis on the network until the Democratic primary has reached a conclusion.

I'm also told that this move came after the Obama campaign repeatedly complained to high level officials at CNN about the presence of Carville and Begala on the network.

After I reached him today and pointed out that he hadn't been on CNN in some time, Carville confirmed to me that the network had told him that he wouldn't appear until the Dem primary is resolved.

Sam Feist, CNN's political director, also confirmed the decision to me. "As we got closer to the voting, we made a decision to make sure that all the analysts that are on are non-aligned," Feist said, adding that the decision had been made around the start of December. "Carville and Begala are two of the best analysts around and we look forward to seeing them on CNN plenty of times in the future, once the nominating process has ended."

That would make sense since they are close by. The other casinos are further away and the strip is wide enough that it doesn't effect the MGM Grand which is completely across the strip which is pretty wide.
