Support The Troops
Author: BobR    Date: 04/18/2008 12:47:44

Over the last 5 years we've been inundated with "Support the Troops" propaganda, yellow ribbon magnets, Freedoms Fries, and all other sorts of nonsense designed to test the patriotism of the average American. It almost seemed like if you couldn't reflexively say "I Support the Troops", you were branded a traitor. But how many people could look beyond the jingoism of that phrase to explain what it meant?

A news item yesterday got me thinking about our priorities within the military and the Pentagon, and who REALLY "Supports the Troops". The news reported the story of how a soldier was being denied benefits and asked to return a signing bonus because THEY had discharged him due to his two brothers being killed in action. It seemed so petty when you think of the billions of dollars being flushed down the commode that is the war in Iraq. I decided to dig around a little and see how the U.S. government supports the troops, and how they support the Military-Industrial complex.

So here's a little list that shows how wonderfully we support the troops:

It's disgusting how we nickle and dime them to death. Meanwhile, we pour billions of dollars into the coffers of KBR, Halliburton, and the hardware manufacturers, despite their poor performance and sometimes criminal actions:

Where are the priorities and who sets them? Is this the Pentagon?... the Army?... The President?... The congressional committees? Who is over-seeing this? Up until the Democrats got the majority in Congress, there was NO oversight, and these expensive contracts were handed out to the favored. Perhaps some of this will change now. Hopefully, so will the rules regarding soldier benefits and compensation.

Support The Troops? How about some financial support?

First?

Excellent post Bobber.

It is amazing how Black has become White.

Like John McCain refusing to support the new Jim Webb GI Bill.

Oy!

It's a good thing they asked these questions so that Obama could go ON RECORD as calling them DISTRACTIONS and keeping his commitment to change this type of Gotcha Politics.

Thom Hartmann dissected it really well. The 2 most important factors that I took away from his review of the debate were:

1) The moderators were debating the candidates which isn't the point of a debate and

2) The questions were asked in a Republican Frame. Period. They weren't Democratic questions.

Rachel Maddow pissed off Joe Scarborough a couple of days ago.

He interrupted her within her first sentence and she said "Let me finish my point before you dismiss me."

He left the set in a huff. You can hear him taking off his microphone, then instead of five panelists, there are four.

I've had mine bomb while loading too. Here's what I do:

1) right-click on bar on the bottom (the one with the running programs)

2) Select Task Manager from the menu

3) Click on the Processes tab

4) Click on the Image Name column header to sort by name

5) Locate OUTLOOK in the list, right-click, and select "End Process"

6) If there's more than one, do that for each

Then try restarting it.

This size needs to be registerd becuase it is 150 cc, but 50CC ones down here don't need registration.

They make a lot of sens for things like going to the store, or running errands. For us, it just makes so much sense, especially with Bob working from home 2-3 days a week.

If I get a job in the next month, I might go the scooter route instead of a new-to-me car. I'd probably spend less than I would on a car, I'll still have my crappy car for a while for when I really need one and I'd save the money on gas.

All this is contingent upon actually *getting* a job......

Comment by TriSec on 04/18/2008 15:42:57
Scooters? Feh.

I've gotten the bike out....(early this year) and have already ridden a couple of days.

Good for the ticker, good for the environment, and I get to sneer at all the gas stations I ride by on the way in! (hi test, $3.55/gal in Watertown Square this morning.)

But I'm less than 4 miles from the office....I realize that's not a practical solution for everyone. (and I don't ride during the winter, but I know some hardcore folks that do. If gas stays this high, I may consider buying the gear and going for it.)

The laws in GA are: 50cc and above, they need to be registered, and you need to get a motorcycle license.

The guy was explaining to us that 50ccs are very small - one person only - and could not be used on the interstate. Even the 150cc one we are looking at has a top speed of 60, and I don't know how long I would want to keep the engine wound up to maintain that speed.

There's still the big question of how would the files get transferred? It would require either a network crossover cable or a USB cable and some finagling.

For the USB cable, it would probably also require both laptops to be the same OS: either PC or Mac.

Well, like I said, the files are on an external hard drive. I could either just bring the drive with a cable or burn all the files to CDs and just give them to LI.

ahhhh.... I missed that part. I would say no, then, on the burn files to CD part...

If it uses a USB cable to connect, then it should be no problem at all. If it uses FireWire, make sure Livin has a FireWire port on his laptop.

I've seen one of those on the way home a couple of times. They look really cool! I wonder if you have to get a motorcycle license to drive them.

:star: does have her motorcycle license!

And, yeah 50cc...jeebus.

I learned on a 250cc...and even that felt like it couldn't keep up with some of the other bikes.

Hey...don't blast those yellow magnet (cause you 'could change your mind' about 'supporting the troops') folks too much ....they just believe all $1.99 of the proceeds are going to the troops or to a troop charity....

They don't bother reading the fine print (ie, 10% of the proceeds go the the 'troops' - gee...like you can really be totally sure and trust that ;))

That's why I love my wife's bumper sticker so much (because she's not going to change her mind about it....ie, magnet)

A piece of mail just found its way to me from my old address: six tollway violations totalling over $100 from Illinois. The payment is due by April 21 - Monday, initally mailed on March 31st.

But Shelagh, you might ask, don't you have an I-Pass so all tolls are automatically paid?

Yep, I do.

But Shelagh, you haven't been on the Illinois Tollway since January.

Yep, that's right. Apparently it takes this long for the fines to process. Interesting to note, the fines aren't all from the same date. They encompass SIX DIFFERENT DATES / LOCATIONS TOTAL.

But Shelagh, doesn't the Illinois Tollway have your license plate on file and haven't they always claimed that even if you don't have your I-Pass in your car as long as they check to see that your license plate matches everything will be fine and you'll never receive a ticket?

Well, this sure shoots that little reassurance all to shit, doesn't it?

I'm wondering if this is also wrapped up with those two fines I got from the Pennsylvania tollway, but didn't find out about it until last week and am now still dealing with it until the PA tollway sends me something proving they're taken care of.

I'm also wondering if I'm due for a second round of fines on that Budget rental car from Illinois as well - all charged happily to my credit card.

btw, I've now been on hold for over twenty minutes. I additionally wonder if I'm not the only person who got a shitload of fines from this supposedly efficient way of handling tollway costs.....

::::sigh::::

Well, now that I've had three for the week, I should be all done.

Right?.......

:thud:

Comment by livingonli on 04/18/2008 22:01:05
Yikes, Shelagh.

Maybe I should be glad I still pay tolls by cash. I think I prefer the anonymity of paying my tolls upfront with cash.

After half an hour on the phone, someone finally told me that they'd already found the error.

Of course, I may be going through this all over again if/when I get another charge on my credit card from Budget.

Illinois almost forced the issue about those transponders for people who travel a lot on the tollways. If you don't have one, *all* toll charges are doubled.

For someone who has to commute through two tollways each direction, with transponder, that's about $1.60 a day; without transponder $3.20.

Most people went for the transponders.
