The Passing of the Torch
Author: BobR    Date: 05/21/2008 12:34:01

race [reys]
–noun
1. a contest of speed, as in running, riding, driving, or sailing.
2. any contest or competition, esp. to achieve superiority: the arms race; the presidential race.
3. a group of persons related by common descent or heredity.

There were two big news stories yesterday: Ted Kennedy was diagnosed with an inoperable malignant brain tumor, and Barack Obama clinched a majority of pledged delegates. These two huge threads in our national fabric are intertwined by more than their chronological proximity. They are connected in spirit by the progression of the hope of a better America.

Within the Olympic games, there are team sports and individual sports. When it comes to team sports, the baton race is perhaps the most historically authentic. The team engages in a footrace, passing the baton, each racer building on the gains achieved by the previous team member. The Olympic torch relay is based on this race. Thus, the phrase "passing the torch" is generally considered to be referring to passing the mantle of leadership to the next person to take over, but at a lower level there is also the theme that one's position is improved by the efforts of the predecessor.

Ted Kennedy's long career in politics began before he became a senator. He worked on both of his brothers' campaigns, helping to usher in a new paradigm on civil rights. To bookend his career, he fought to get a bill passed that ensured employers discovered to have been discriminatory in pay practices were punished appropriately. In between, his battles for liberal causes helped create an America that cared about and cared for ALL of its citizens.

This past January, Ted Kennedy endorsed Barack Obama for president. Four months later, he's been diagnosed with brain cancer. Last night, after it was clear that Obama had gained a lead in pledged delegates that is more than the remaining delegates to be awarded in the race (indicating Clinton cannot surpass him in that regard, even if she wins 100% of the delegates in the remaining races), Obama said in his speech that he "stands on the shoulders of Ted Kennedy".

In the past forty years since Ted Kennedy entered politics, race relations in this country have gone from caustic to contentious to constrained. I remember an episode of Seinfeld, where they were discussing the black and white cookie (image here for the uninitiated). They described it as a metaphor for race relations in the city, indicating that the black and white work together for the betterment of the whole. So too may one consider Barack Obama, whom many consider as "black" while in reality he is half black and half white. Like the cookie, he is the embodiment of what race relations could be in America.

So while this race towards the presidency is nearing an end, the race towards an America where race is not even an afterthought continues. With his endorsement, Ted Kennedy has passed the torch to Barack Obama. With his gaining a majority of the delegates, Obama has shown that his feet are swift.

See you all at the finish line.

I hope that Ted has a good and happy life for as long as he has left. He's had such a great career.

Mornin' BobR & Velveeta (& other 4Fers),

Thoughtful post BobR, thanks for your good words this morning. I woke up in a hospital bed this morning with wires and crap hanging all over me. I do have sleep apnea (11 times in one hour I stopped breathing for ten seconds or more ). I go back to get fitted for a sleep mask which should help with the nighttime waking, which in turn should help with my overall sleep, which should help with my overall energy level, which should help me work out more, lose weight, and maybe get to the point when I don't need the mask anymore. I don't mean to bore you with all the details of my sorry medical situation - but you do feel like family to me, so sorry if I am sharing too much information, but I really value youse guys :D

Have a great day everybody, and buy some good shoes VJ - wasn't it Bella Abzug who once said that nothing beats a good pair of shoes :)

Cheers,

mfaye

Excellent blog BobR. Concise, to the point but not chopped short.

After the all-too-brief struggle by the mayor of Pittsburgh two years ago with brain cancer, I have problems hoping for the best for the esteemed Senator. But I truly hope he lives long enough to see President Obama sworn in come January.

Holy Crap Faye! Okay.......... we need to whip you into shape. Where's my whip?...........

I had some sort of similar thing - I would get in some position while asleep and then half-way wake up, but not be able to breathe. Nor could I move or talk! Very frightening!! It would scare the HELL out of me and used to happen about 3 or 4 times a week.

Oddly enough.......... when I got sober, it stopped. Now I get it maybe twice a year.

I don't know if that's what you have, but if it is, then I pray you get it fixed. I would be scared to sleep. Now that I don't "pass out" to sleep, I actually "go to bed" I don't have that anymore (knock on wood).

Please get better.

Good morning, bloggers!!

I have a rare morning at home, so I thought I would swing by and wish everyone a good day.

Ted Kennedy has many challenges ahead of him, but he should be proud of his accomplishments. Many people live or have better lives because of his support for such things as health care and student loans.

The Daily Headlines are up at UNN for those who want to check them out.

Is it me, or is the FOX NEWS crowd getting more desperate by the hour. They do not know how to say something about Barack Obama and make it stick. So, I wonder when one of them will "accidentally" slip and let out a racial epithet.

2 arrested as explosives seized at nuclear plant

MSNBC News Services

updated 35 minutes ago

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Two people were arrested Wednesday after a worker was stopped at the entrance of a Swedish nuclear plant with a bag containing traces of an explosive which has been used in terror attacks.

Police said a welder was stopped during a random security check at the facility. Plant spokesman Roger Bergman said a second suspect was arrested because "there is some uncertainty about who owns the bag."

Sven-Erik Karlsson, spokesman for Kalmar County Police, said officers were called to the Oskarshamn nuclear plant on the country's southeast coast at 7:58 a.m. local time.

This woman is just wretched.

Geraldine Ferraro spoke to Shepard Smith earlier today on Fox News and claimed that media coverage of Hillary Clinton has been unfair and sexist.

"All the surrogates that they had out there, from the black journalists — you know, have you read Bob Herbert recently in the past six months? There wasn't one column that had anything decent to say about Hillary."

Ferraro said she's been speaking about "sexist behavior" since December and plans to write an op-ed calling for an "independent group to do a study on media."

"When Tim Russert came into the campaign and he went after Hillary in the debate, he had done that also when she ran for the Senate here in New York," Ferraro said. "And we complained about it then. He kind of almost was up on the stage helping her opponent."

"He's not a candidate," she added. "He's a moderator."

After Ferraro mentioned contacting CNN about its coverage, Smith asked if she considered the network "in the tank" for Obama.

Ferraro didn't agree but gave her own critique.

"I'm saying that they're looking at this race, and they've got a goal," Ferraro said. "They have a goal. They never wanted to be accused of racism, but it's perfectly OK to be accused of sexism. That's a problem."

From Politico.

Mason City {Iowa} man has claimed responsibility for a poster containing racial slurs placed in the front yard of an black family earlier this month.

Justin Hanson said Tuesday that he put the cardboard sign that read “F—- you, n——-s” in the front yard of a Mason City home the night of May 10.

“Most of the problems in this country are caused by colored people,” Hanson said Tuesday, acknowledging his beliefs are racist. “It wasn’t placed there to hurt anyone. It was a scare tactic.”
