Day 1
Author: BobR    Date: 06/04/2008 12:21:26

Our long national nightmare is over.

The Primary season has finally come to a close. No more speaches, no more talking heads, no more tortured math about the popular vote. Barack Obama collected enough delegates yesterday to clinch the nomination. He WILL be the nominee for the Democratic Party in the fall.

There will be the desperate naysayers. There will be those hanging on to the notion that enough superdelegates could be persuaded to change their minds to deliver the nomination to Senator Clinton. Despite their pleas, despite their rationalization, despite their fuzzy math, it will not happen. The Clintons are a powerful political force, but the electorate is more so, and the electorate has spoken.

There was hope and there were expectations that Clinton would concede the victory last night, but she did not. Her motivations for not exiting gracefully when it's clear that she's lost the race may never be known for sure. Is she hoping to change the minds of the superdelegates?... Does she think that not conceding will give her more leverage for a veep slot?... Does she hope that more people will contribute to her campaign to help her retire her debt?

The reality is that she still wields a tremendous amount of power in this election. She has a huge number of supporters, some of them quite rabid. She can control whether Obama or McCain wins in the fall. She cannot, however, control whether she gets the top slot, something that she must come to terms with. If she were to tell all of her supporters "I want you to vote for Obama in November", I suspect a large number that are saying they'd vote for McCain over Obama would heed her words. The threatened migration of Hillary supports across party lines would not happen.

She won't do that until the last night of the convention. That is her biggest ace in the hole, and she is smart not to play it until she gets whatever she can at the convention. I just hope she puts country and party above herself when it comes down to it.

For now we can breathe again, and put our support behind Obama. This is an historic moment. He has done what has only been attempted by others in the past like Shirley Chisholm, Carol Moseley Braun, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton. He is the other bookend that began in 1872 with John Roy Lynch and Frederick Douglass (whose running mate was a woman!).

More importanly though, he is our candidate, an erudite man that cares about ALL Americans, and will lead our country the way he ran his primary campaign: with grace, humility, and a velvet hammer when needed. He is a man for the people, of the people, and selected by the people.

Today is day 1. It's time to focus on McCain and November.

I will refrain from using the dreaded "F" comment, but since I'm breaking ground on this here post...

I was going to use today to gloat all over the Stooges at the liveblog, but following the example of OUR nominee, I will refrain and simply say how unfortunate it is that some Hillary supporters just can't seem to let go. I noticed that Adele is bringing up the allegedly shocking "Why'd he" video. Sad, really.

South Dakota:

Good morning, bloggers!!! Excellent blog entry, BobR! We have to remember that if we want Obama to win and push forward more progressive policies, he will need out support and our voices to counter other influences.

I think that your advice is sound. Maybe the Stephanie Miller Show team has decided enough is enough. Let us try to convince Clinton's supporters that what unites Democrats and progressives is more powerful and important than what divides us.

The UNN Daily Headlines are up.

Great post BobR! And I agree with you. I was so hoping to hear her finally be gracious and bow out........... sadly she did not. And worse, she wants us to go to her website to tell her what we think, but when you go you are met with a pop-up box asking for your opinion - your ONLY choice? "Show your support and stand with Hillary".

:thud:

Sure, you can leave a message, but they aren't going to read the personal messages, they are going to ................(wait for it) .................. count the votes and say that 30 million people or so, want her to stay in the race.

Comment by BobR on 06/04/2008 13:27:34
Excellent post-mortem analysis:

By itself, Clinton's Iraq vote didn't cost her the nomination. There were other culprits: her ever-changing campaign themes, poor financial planning, squabbling staff and a field organizing plan designed for quick victory rather than a 50-state delegate hunt.

McCain: Every three seconds turn head to next prompter - Right - Middle - Left - Middle - Left (damn, wrong direction...pause...pause...) Middle - Right - Middle

Hillary: Left, look down transition, Right, look down transistion, middle.

Had good timing

Obama: Cadence to words with turning of head from Right to left.

If she wants the Majority Position, she should be able to go for it, but it is strange that so many think that soemthing needs to be *done* with her.

I don't much like the term "done" either. It reminds me of putting an ill animal "out to pasture." She has incredible strength - she is my Senator - I will vote for her again should she choose to run.

But in this presidential race, she has earned spoils. That's just politics. I wish there was no quid pro quo, but at least for her supporters, there likely is. And the "quo" is necessary to elect Obama - probably for Clinton herself, but for her supporters.

I think that there is a difference between supporting Israel and supporting the policies of the Likud and other right wing parties and their supporters.

Both the Israelis and the Palestinians want peace and security. The hardliners on either side have delivered neither.

Sam Seder recently quoted a poll where 64 percent of Israelis support talking directly to Hamas. So, should not U.S. policy in the region respect the wishes of the majority of Israelis and Palestinians?

Contrary to what some of McCain's supporters claim, no U.S. president will throw Israel to the wolves. However, I do think Obama should make negotiating a peace settlement a high priority. This may be a good way to put Bill Clinton to use in his administration. At least he can tell the difference between a loofah and a falafel, unlike some hosts at Faux Noise.

I will go with that. We need a filibuster-proof majority so that the Republicans can't mess things up. Or better yet, a veto-proof majority to send them back to irrelevance.

And of course, Obama is going to have clean up the mess that Bush has made and with him using the phony stimulus to prop up the economy by a thread, it is very likely we could be dealing with an even worse situation in '09 than the one we have now.

oy, I just HAD to go look... :rolleyes2:

First of all - the picture on the banner is from... what... 1985?

And there's this:

South Dakota and Montana, thanks to Hillary Clinton, vote today. Hillary Clinton fights for the rights of primary voters. Obama runs a campaign by NOT counting votes and getting votes in states he did not even run in.

Do these people not realize that both Hillary and Barack agreed to not run in FL and MI, and that Hillary reneged on the agreement? Do they not realize that even though he didn't "run" in FL, people still voted for him, and in large numbers?

DNC Leadership says all SDs should declare by Friday

"The voters have spoken," they said, adding later, "Democrats must now turn our full attention to the general election. To that end, we are urging all remaining uncommitted super delegates to make their decisions known by Friday of this week, so that our party can stand united."

The carefully-worded statement, which does not urge the superdelegates to go one way or the other, is a clear step to force an end to the effort by Clinton, who said Tuesday she would take a few days to consider her options and protect the voices of the nearly 18 million voters who cast ballots for her in recent months. Her hand is now being forced by the Friday deadline.

anyone who has ever owned a cat, knows it is about the only creature that can look cute, while torturing something.

George Carlin did a pretty good bit on that.

I miss being able to post my daily reading in the morning...

Hope everyone is well....

Hey Raine & Bob...we're going to send some dough to Obama next week, we just ordered our yard sign, two bumper stickers, & a rally sign that we're going to tape to our highest front window...just so our crazy 'giuliani 08' neighbor can see it!

Laina's out of school, so she's got some wild hairs going on...her birthday is this Saturday, so if you could e-mail her, that'd be great!

Happy for Obama, I changed my posting name from (Bitter for Hussein Obama - aka right wing hater) on C&L to (Democratic Party Unity - aka right wing hater)....

We were tearing last night watching his speech, so happy!

Oh...by the way...can everyone see if Shane-O can put together that list of bushisms....and I just had a great idea....

Shane-0, if you're up for it, lets see if Raine & Bob can put up a Top 25/50 thread Bushisms (soundbytes, wavs, etc)

Here is a list of the Top 50...complete with dates

http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/bushquotes/a/dumbbushquotes.htm

Ok Shane-O, my ultimate idea, if you can pull it off...get a mix of the top 25 Bushisms and then finish that list off with Keith Olbermann's ultimate 'Shut the HELL up' from his special comment to top it off/end it.

Keith's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrDnpYDQauw&feature=related

Raine/Bob...let me know if there is anything else I can do...

Oh...and Shane-O, please include these two: Don't come and bother us, because we will kill you http://www.splicemusic.com/songs/iminimy/silly-bush-monkey-8/

Randi Rhodes plays this all the time, and its our favorite...

And this one please: When we gave Nuclear technology to India (Nukes for Mangoes gate) - http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0603/02/ldt.01.html

The Soundbyte (that Randi Rhodes plays alot): "The United States is looking forward to eating Indian mangoes." ....if you can include those two that would be great!

Okay, so i finally figured out why MSNBC, CNN, and Fox has different percentage points for the two candidates.

Fox

Obama 102,373 58%

Clinton 74,792 42%

CNN

Obama 102,373 57%

Clinton 74,792 41%

MSNBC

Obama 102,373 56%

Clinton 74,792 41%

first off, to say roughly 2 percent of the vote went to neither Obama or Clinton.

No Preference 4,258 2%

Both MSNBC and CNN acknowledge this count.

Fox ignores this number...and that makes them idiots.

now, taking the numbers from there, obama is at roughly 57.4%, CNN rounded up, MSNBC rounded down.

I rounded down, so the difference between the two is 15.

Meaning Random and livingonli won the Montana pool

Wow. WOW!!!!! WOW

Update: Obama and Lieberman had a heated conversation on the floor of the Senate later today. Details below.

Senator Joe Lieberman, serving aptly as John McCain's foreign policy attack dog, jumped on a conference call with reporters on Wednesday to rip holes into Barack Obama's stance on Israel.

Playing off of Obama's address to the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, the Connecticut independent acknowledged that he hadn't heard the speech -- and urged for a "civil and constructive" presidential campaign -- before taking Obama to task for not being consistently tough on Iran.

"I appreciate many of the very good intentions to Israel and Israeli security that Senator Obama express today," said Lieberman. "I thought in the speech there was a disconnect between things Senator Obama said today, particularly in regard to Iran, and things he has said or done earlier either in the campaign or the Senate."

[...]

UPDATE: Roll Call reports:

Furthermore, during a Senate vote Wednesday, Obama dragged Lieberman by the hand to a far corner of the Senate chamber and engaged in what appeared to reporters in the gallery as an intense, three-minute conversation.

While it was unclear what the two were discussing, the body language suggested that Obama was trying to convince Lieberman of something and his stance appeared slightly intimidating.

Using forceful, but not angry, hand gestures, Obama literally backed up Lieberman against the wall, leaned in very close at times, and appeared to be trying to dominate the conversation, as the two talked over each other in a few instances.

Still, Obama and Lieberman seemed to be trying to keep the back-and-forth congenial as they both patted each other on the back during and after the exchange.

Afterwards, Obama smiled and pointed up at reporters peering over the edge of the press gallery for a better glimpse of their interaction.

Obama loyalists were quick to express their frustration with Lieberman's decision and warned that if he continues to take a lead role in attacking Obama it could complicate his professional relationship with the Caucus.

F*ck you Joe.

And don't ever let anyone tell you Obama is a pushover... he came out of Chicago Politics. ;)

Breaking: Obama will NOT be offering HRC the VP slot:

Sen. Hillary Clinton, who refused to concede after Sen. Barack Obama claimed the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, will do so Friday, two top advisers said. Close supporters suggested she would like to be his running mate, on a unity ticket.

But close advisers to Sen. Obama signaled an Obama-Clinton ticket was highly unlikely. People in both camps cited what several called "a deal-breaker" -- Bill Clinton may balk at releasing records of his business dealings and big donors to his presidential library.

A day after his history-making declaration that he had enough delegates to be the nominee, Sen. Obama ...

Maybe we should send a delegation to Beantown.

Gonzo won't give commencement speeches at "elite" schools instead he ends up having to settle for giving them at Christian high schools in the Virgin Islands.

Next hour, Mike Malloy is going to compare and contrast the three speeches. Should be mighty entertaining.

Bobber and I might be the only folks around these parts that have actual memories of the assassination.

I remember being in 2nd grade and our teacher having us all draw gravestones for him.

No, I am not kidding.

My hours may suck but at least they're constant. Then again, my mind flutters between changing careers, relocating or both. But with the economy the way it is, I wouldn't want to just jump ship.

With the primaries winding down, you think you can convince your sis to come over here and join us?

Sox win...

Back in first place after trailing Tampa for the past 11 days. A hard slide by Coco into second late in the game will probably make for an entertaining closer tomorrow night...

(Never mind NY; that's a professional relationship. The Sox and Rays really and truly hate each other...)

Our MSG Network devoted a lot of coverage to the playoffs during the first two rounds but once the Rangers were eliminated, they stopped caring.

I've heard that the Rays organization has been firing people left and right form the minor people working in the park all the way up if anyone slips and says "Devil Rays".

Does everyone realize the two conventions will be back-to-back this year with the Republicans the week after the Democratic Convention.

And the NHL season finally comes to an end.

The NBA Finals will start tomorrow and if that goes a full 7 games, it will take two weeks to play.

At least it wasn't triple-overtime like Monday's game. It would have been exhausting to carry the cup around 1 AM.
