CHICAGO (WLS) --
Three men were killed and at least 17 others were wounded in Chicago shootings on New Year's Day.

In the latest shooting, a 33-year-old man was fatally shot while sitting in a parked car around 10:30 p.m. Friday in the 6100-block of South Sangamon, police said. Officials say the man was a known gang member.

The first shooting of 2016 left one person injured early New Year's Day in the South Chicago neighborhood.

The 34-year-old woman was inside a residence at 12:05 a.m. Friday in the 8000 block of South Paxton when a bullet came through the second-floor window and grazed her hand, police said. She was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital in good condition police said.

"We heard a popping sound, and I guess the sound went past my sister's ear," says Vianca Fisher, the victim's sister. "She raised her hand up, and the bullet went from the window through her finger.:

The room was full of relatives, including young children watching New Year's Eve celebrations on TV which is where the bullet lodged.

"If this kids were standing in front of the TV, who knows what would have happened," Fisher says.

The bullet was apparently fired by a reveler who was celebrating the new year by shooting into the air. Neighbors were left shaking their heads.

"It's a New Year's custom that should be done away with," says Cindy Kirksey.

A little over two hours later, Chicago had its first homicide of the year. Police say the victim is 24-year-old Deandre Holiday, gang member who had been arguing with another man inside a bar when it spilled out into the street. The other man pulled a gun and shot him in the chest, then fled, police said.

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Columbus police said one man was critically injured after being shot early on Saturday morning.

Police said 29-year-old James Bowman Jr. shot 22-year-old Rexx Wilson in the stomach area just after midnight on Saturday. Wilson was reportedly seen damaging vehicles in the 200 block of Reeb Avenue. Police said one of the vehicles belongs to a relative of Bowman.

Wilson was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition.

Bowman was charged with one count of felonious assault.

LEXINGTON, Ky (WKYT) - The young man who was shot early Friday morning on Lexington's north side has passed away.

The Fayette County Coroner's Office confirms, 28-year-old Joseph Allen McDowell, passed away shortly after midnight at UK Hospital.

This has now become Lexington's first homicide case of 2016. The shooting happened early Friday around 5 a.m. on Roosevelt Blvd. off Georgetown Street.

Neighbors say they were sleeping when shots were fired mere feet from their doorsteps. Lexington police want to know what led up to the shooting.

Police were called to the 400 block of Roosevelt Blvd. on the city's north end shortly before 5:30am Friday morning. They arrived to find a 28-year-old male unresponsive and suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

Police say he was shot two to three times; once in the head and once in the chest. He was transported to UK Hospital in critical condition where he later died.

The shooting happened in front of a residence right by a blue truck, but police still don't know why the victim was in front of the residence. Howard Underwood lives there.

"I didn't know nothin' about it," Underwood said. "I didn't get home until one, two o'clock this morning."

Underwood says he just moved to the area and after the shooting he worries for his family.

"I heard it's bad around through here. 'Cause anybody tell you when New Year's come in you're going to hear gunshots and everything."

Sheriff’s deputies had been to the house on Batson Avenue 25 times in the last three years, after neighbors or others reported disturbances in the low-slung ranch house in Rowland Heights.

But the call for help that came on New Year’s Eve was different.

Christopher Morey, 33, called 911 to report a shooting at his family’s home. Four people were dead, sheriff’s officials said, including a man Morey shot: his father.

Morey’s father had apparently opened fire shortly after 8:30 p.m., killing his son’s bedridden mother, girlfriend and friend, said sheriff’s Lt. John Corina. Morey then wrestled the handgun away from the 54-year-old and shot him once, killing him, sheriff’s officials said.

Morey was booked on suspicion of murder and held in lieu of $1 million bail, Corina said. Prosecutors will decide whether to charge him with a crime.

“We’ll see what the D.A. wants to do,” Corina said. “We’re going to book him for what he did — he killed another human being.”

Relatives of Morey declined to speak to reporters Friday at the family’s home.

Corina said investigators were still trying to determine why Morey’s father started shooting, but he said those in the group “were all drinking.” He said investigators were looking into whether the shooting stemmed from a dispute earlier in the day between Morey's father and Morey's girlfriend over her use of a washing machine.

Detectives have spoken with neighbors and others who were at the home Thursday to verify what the son told detectives.

“We’re still trying to corroborate what exactly happened and his version of events,” Corina said. “We’re trying to piece it all together.”

The names of those who were killed were not immediately released by coroner’s officials. But one woman who went to the home on Friday said her son, 27-year-old Ernesto Calzadilla, was among the victims.
