September Morn
Author: Raine    Date: 09/11/2008 12:21:22

Good morning everyone.

A few weeks ago, I went back to to NY for a visit. Being that I was going to be staying in Jersey City with a friend for a few nights, I had to do what I had not done in years, I went to the WTC Path Station. You know the one: it ran under the towers. The station reopened in 2003, and a new entrance was finished by 2006. It was beautiful, really. But: they have since torn it down.

I was rather shocked to see it gone when I returned this summer. The entrance was moved, the grand design was gone. Something else shocked me: there was nothing there. Nothing but chain-link fences, plywood covering up what appeared to be nothing more than another generic, non-distinct NYC (or any city for that matter) construction site. I heard the sounds, the bulldozers, the jackhammers, the trucks --- but I couldn't see anything. it was blocked from view, ALL around the area. It seemed wrong, and not because I was in mourning for this day still... I could not put my finger on it... Was it the waste of money... of time? The lack of regard by those in charge to the importance of the day for the victims families? I didn't know.
And then Paul Reikoff reminded me. (and he said it better than I ever could)

'7 years later, 'Ground Zero' is nothing but a hole in the ground. A gaping mammoth hole.'
http://news.thomasnet.com/IMT/WTC_site_construction_July2007.JPG

All the talk of rebuilding and honoring the victims and the victims' familes, all the talk of honor & service to our country, all the promises of healing and rebuilding ... all of that talk, and 'Ground Zero' has become nothing more than a symbol of empty promises.

It took 8 years for us to put a man on the moon. One would think that we could close this gaping flesh wound sooner than that. There is no way a wound can heal if it is still open. 2749 people died in NYC that day. 184 people perished in Washington D.C. 40 people were lost forever to a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania on September 11. Say a prayer for their families in whatever way you choose, but be angry that those who HAVE the power to close the hole in the ground have not. Ground Zero has become nothing more than a symbol of broken promises because of them.

First? Raine, nice post I am feeling at loose ends today, thanks to a certain commentary I heard last night.

Good Morning.

I've had my PTSD moment for the day. I awoke this morning with an unsettled stomach....and put on NECN (New England Cable News) first thing, like I always do.

Of course, like every other news agency today, they're doing their retrospective coverage.

Not 30 seconds after turning on the TV this morning, I was greeted by archival footage of the second plane going in, with the incredulous voice-overs of the stunned anchors.

Even now, typing the words, I'm shaking. Thank god I did not hear any planes overhead this morning.

I allowed myself a brief patriotic moment, as I pulled out my worn "Old Glory" and hung it back out today. I don't recall if I had it out the morning of 9/11, but if I did, it's the same flag. Over the ensuing 8 years, I have rarely flown it. (favoring the Culpepper Minutemen and Bennington Flags).

In any case....

Livin, as the closest member to Lower Manhattan, if you get anywhere near it today, please look skyward and remember for us.

Regarding New York's "hole in the ground" (still the best Special Comment ever), Boston unveiled a tidy little memorial over the weekend at Logan Airport. Sorry for the small picture, but there's not much better out there yet.

Morning all. Nice post Raine. For me, not being a New Yawker at all, only a frequent visitor, I would love to have seen them turn the site into a beautiful park. I think it would be a nice way to honor the victims of WTC.

'Course they can rebuild No. 7 - since there was no reason for it to "fall" anyway!

morning

blogging from home today and tomorrow.

How long does it take to build something in NYC? I've been wondering that for a while. I know it probably takes longer the average for various reasons. The workers at the Pentagon worked extra shifts and pushed hard to finsh repairing a high security building in one year from the date it happened. They wanted to basically give the finger to OBL.

I know the workers in NY want to do the same thing and that repairing a building is different the building a new one, but still 7 years?

Raine just mentioned to me that it took 7 years from the initial groundbreaking to the finished WTC towers.

It's been 7 years and there's still nothing there.

An empty plot and a disfigured skyline is much more valuable to the Republicans than any sign of progress or healing.

Thinking about driving from the hotel in Jersey City, and a collegue casually mentioning - "hey - the World Trade Center's on fire", none of us realizing the enormity of what had happened, or what was to come.

Simply a few flames licking out of a few windows...

Hey ya'll. A mod from another board has a great way to show support for your candidate. So I'm passing this along, lets start a movement. All Americans should join in:

In a few months, Americans will go to the polls to elect a new leader.

The person elected will not just be the President of the Republicans or Democrats, but of all Americans.

So we need to come together in solidarity and show support for the candidate of our choice, Reps and Dems alike.

If you support Obama and change, please drive with your headlights on all day.

If you support the same crap as the last 8 years, John McCain, please drive with your headlights off at night.

Thank You.

I was driving to work and the morning show said something about a plane hitting the WTC, they thought it was just a small personal plane, no one knew what was going on but everyone's first thought was to hope people were okay.

Then getting closer to work sitting at a light I happen too look up and see a plane turning back toward National and thinking it odd to see a plane at that time in that place. Came over a small hill a few minutes later and saw smoke way off in the distance and knew it couldn't be good.

In the office we had a hard time getting the TV to tune into something with just rabbit ears but still beinga able to see the buildings fall.

It's all still very clear in my head.

Kinda like my experience.

A co-worker casually glided by my cube that morning and mentioned that "A plane hit the world trade center, have you heard anything?"

"Oh, Excellent" were my first words.

Then I spent the next 15 hours glued to the radio and TV.

It was that first night that really freaked me out, when I heard the planes overhead, knowing they were F-15s on Combat Air Patrol.

I tend to take a more pragmatic view of the site , I don't know if it becuase I am from the stae, or spent a lot of time working in NYC, but I really think that a new building should go there, with a nice humble memorial park. IT is a Major peice of real estate, and it should be returned as such.

But that is me. they started building the towers in 1966, and the had the official opening in 1973. one would think... one would think... it could be SOMETHING by now.

Morning all...

For the past six years, I've marked this day by picking a place to post my now well-told story about the first moment I heard about what was going on. I don't know if anyone knew what that day had to bring, nor the way it would change our lives for years to come.

Today I was on my way to work, feeling the same chilly September morning, looking up to the same clear sky, listening to silly radio bits, and it occurred to me that we're in the same situation - our country is under attack, not from abroad, but from within. However this time through our own strength and determination we could help shape the events that would change our lives, our country, and our world for years to come.

We can't go back and reclaim what might have been. We can only go forward and reclaim what has been taken from us, both by those who wounded us with their attacks and by those among us who turned that event to their own prejudicial and power-hungry devices.

I've often wondered if I did. the point where I saw it I had just come under the beltway ramp and was stopped at van dorn and eisenhower show its very possible. It was a commercial plane didn't see which flyer.

I was getting ready for work. My girlfriend had already left for work so she was incommunicado, being a teacher. I was picking out clothes to wear, listening to the Dee Snider Show, and "Nick the Intern" interrupted the show a la Cub Reporter Chris Lavoie and said "Hey you guys...a piece of breaking news sort of....a plane just flew into the WTC." They, too, thought it was a private plane, etc.

I went out into the Living Room to check the TV and got there just in time to SEE the 2nd plane fly into the tower. I immediately felt sick....

I did go into work, but the entire we all just sat there watching the monitors. I worked in the call Center back then, so we always had tvs on to watch the market.

It was such a bizarre feeling, that day.

They fall in line behind the President and the Party with their empty looks and pretty smiles, and chant USA! until the cameras shut off.

I wonder if one, just one, anywhere in these United States, sits up alone late at night and wonders "What have I done?"

Good morning everyone!

My back stiffened and I felt a little twinge as my back settled against the very cold, stiff leather car seat this morning. It's just starting to work itself out. Mid 40's. Yuk.

At about 8:50 last night (probably just before Keith went to his Special Comment) I heard a loud hum and thump and watched the bedroom cable box reset itself. The bedroom TiVo seemed to ride through it without a burp, but the living room one (which of course was the one doing the recording) did not. So much for TiVoing the Special Comment :rage:

I was listening to the same radio show.. Had just parked the car and they were going to a commercial break.. I thought it was a radio bit coming up because Dee had a bit of a chuckle in his voice. I shut off the car and didn't think much of it... until the real events started to come out.
