Is there something in the water? After yesterday's high-profile double-whammy of jaw-dropping news, I figured I'd read the most shocking stories of the day. First McCain tries to weasel out of the debates, and then Chimpy tries to blame Wall Street's problems on the average American borrowing too much (after telling us all to go shopping after 9/11), instead of on the companies themselves for lending money they didn't have.

Surprisingly though, there are even more shocking news items to report...

Despite the government finding enough "money" to finance the war in Iraq for 5 years, and finance a bailout for Wall Street, it can't find a few paltry million to prop up the Peace Corps. It's having to cut back due to a budgetary shortfall:
As the U.S. government continues its planning for a 700-billion-dollar bailout of the financial sector, the Peace Corps -- one of the United States' most successful foreign policy programmes -- is being cut back due to a budget shortfall of 18 million dollars.

In 2001, President George W. Bush announced he would double the size of the Peace Corps by fiscal 2007, to 14,000 volunteers. But the popular programme is currently some 6,000 volunteers short of that goal, and budgetary problems are forcing it to eliminate 400 new volunteers as well as postponing -- in some cases, indefinitely -- the deployment of volunteers already approved.

So for all young people that want to do service for their country, you're going to have to pick up a gun to do it. But getting back to the Great Wall Street Bailout of 2008, it should be a shocker (but sadly isn't) that some people are blaming Wall Street's problems on poor blacks:
"Poor blacks caused this,'' said Ellison, Minnesota's the 5th District congressman, scornfully. "That's what we're supposed to believe. Little ACORN caused this. The mighty captains of Wall Street got taken down by little ACORN and poor black people. That's what you're hearing on the right. The gall and audacity of this is beyond imagination.''

In fact, many, including 6th District Rep. Michele Bachmann, seem to be saying that the demise of Wall Street can be traced to the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) of 1977.

That's right. In the eyes of some, today's problems aren't a product of greed, or lack of regulation, but instead can be traced to the Jimmy Carter era. That's when Congress passed CRA, an act that encouraged commercial banks to invest in housing in cities that were facing both redlining and major decline. The idea was simple: Stabilizing neighborhoods, through home ownership, would stabilize cities.

Racism? Probably. If you want some out and out disgusting racism though, you can always count on those with a little extra rope, like the ones that hung an Obama effigy on a Christian college campus:
Officials at a US Christian college have launched an investigation after a cardboard effigy of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was hung from a tree, a statement said Wednesday.

George Fox University, in Newberg, Oregon, said in a statement on its website that the cutout of Obama was found hanging from a tree on campus early Tuesday morning before being removed by staff.

A sign reading "Act Six reject" was taped to the cutout. Act Six is a scholarship program run by the college granted to 10 student leaders from urban Portland. Most of the students currently benefiting from the program are ethnic minorities, the statement said.

Who Would Jesus Lynch?

From disgusting to pick-up-your-jaw, it seems that there are still eugenics adherents alive and thriving. A Loiusiana state rep is advocating for sterilizing poor women:
State Representative John LaBruzzo of Metairie said many of his constituents are tired of paying for children from poor families and that is why he is considering proposing legislation that would pay women on government assistance $1,000 if they choose to be sterilized.

“You have these people who are just fed up with working their buns off to try to provide for their own family and being forced by the government o provide for others’ families who just want to have unlimited kids,” he said.

"Hitler, John LaBruzzo on line one..."

Finally, we have proof that PETA has officially Jumped The Shark. They are asking Ben & Jerry's to use human breast milk in their ice cream:
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.

"PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves," the statement says.

PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health.

Alrighty then. Roger, over and WAY out...

Bob, I want you to call me on the phone right now. Obviously I'm still asleep and in some kind of nightmare world; I need a wakeup call. Maybe we all do.

Is John McCain effing kidding me?

No Sir, this is not a reason to cancel a debate. People aren't drowning in their own shit and piss. Landmark buildings aren't collapsing into their own footprints. Greedy people f*cked up the system and this 'crisis' was a long time coming. This isn't an act of God. It's an act of averice.

So, put on your f*cking Big Daddy Pants and step up to the microphone.

F*ckers.

I am pissed!

And for those reathers I fluffled last nite, I love you guys too. I mean that.

Oh, I have to see if there's a link out there, but I believe that Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) called Sen. McCain a "mary" regarding backing out of the debates. ("That's the biggest Mary ever").

In Troop 61, back in the day, we used "Mary" as a somewhat unsavory term for a Tenderfoot scout. (Afraid of the woods, getting dirty, etc...)

Xanax for a dental cleaning? You might just sleep through the whole thing!

Hank Paulson now offering $700bil government takeover of the New York Yankees

Now, I may be a Yankee fan, but let's be real here. I'd rather the taxpayers own the team than the fucking Steinbrenners.

If we're paying that much for the new Yankee Stadium I would be down with that. And the Steinbrenners are a bunch of Republican crooks so I would be glad if they went away. Far, Far away.

Oh yeah.. Since the Yankees are out of the playoff picture, I'm going National League!

Only problem is do I stay loyal to New York (the Mets) or to Joe Torre (the Dodgers)?

Comment by TriSec on 09/25/2008 14:18:50
I'd be more inclined to treat you kindly if you're with the Dodgers, Scoop. ("Red Sox West", as we've taken to calling them in these parts.) They've long been one of my NL teams.

The Mets, of course, are pond scum.

At least they're not bums who left Brooklyn! :D

The playoffs are gonna be interesting this year. Then again, lately the Angels tend to kick everyone's butts.

Heya Roomie,

I with you - the president has gotta be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. What's the deal? Why $700 BILLION? Where did that number come from except Bush/Cheney/Paulson's asses?

Screw 'em all. Why don't they spend that amount bailing out folks who are about to lose their homes? I swan :rage:

It's an extensive cleaning called "root planing" done under the gum line. They recommended the Xanax because the laughing gas is so much more expensive...

I know if I was going to go through that, I would want to be as doped up as possible since I have a very low tolerance to pain.

Aaaaigh! Just the description made me do this:

Xanax, Valium, and a single-malt chaser? I think that's what I'd need. (I'm not prone to medical tenseness, but I did bite my dentist's finger once. He's been literally "once bitten, twice shy" ever since.)

Okay I kinda get it now - when I had my wisdoms pulled they offered the choice of local (novacaine) or general (NO2 gas) and the difference in price was ridiculous. I took the needles - and how! The guy gave me something like 8 good shots of novacaine just into my upper jaw!

Jeez what about good old sodium pentathol? That is what they gave me when I had my wisdom teeth removed. They put the thing in my are, the dentist asked where I went to school, I said Montgomery Coll...next thing I knew the well endowed nurse in the tight double knit smock was offering me strong narcotics for the post op pain.

Whew. The Xanax was meant to get me to relax before they gave me the Shots of Novacain. That was f*cking rough. I go back next week for the other half of my mouth.

Now the question is will Johnny boy stick around in DC for the vote on the bill scheduled for tomorrow, or will he skip it to get a nice pre-debate nap?

Not to speculate on the morbid (as one human being to another, I do hope his health is OK.) but what would happen should a major party candidate drop dead of something horrid before the general election?

I shudder to think that Palin would get "promoted" to the top of the ticket, but given what the Bush "administration" is, I'm sure that's the crisis they would need to postpone the election...

Well, the ballots are already up, so America would be voting for a dead man, with her as the VP candidate, best as I can see.
