The Undecideds - what are they waiting for?
Author: BobR    Date: 10/31/2008 12:37:31

I read an article this morning that said 1 in 7 voters are still "persuadable" in this election. That means that 14% of likely voters are still not sure who they're going to vote for on Tuesday. What makes them undecided?

Asked where they disagree with Obama, changeable voters most frequently mention taxes and the economy, health care, abortion and social issues such as gun control, and personal traits including his race and his honesty. For McCain, it's the economy and taxes, health care, foreign policy and abortion.

In the interest of preserving the public good, let's see if we can persuade these folks to do the right thing....

Taxes:
Unless the person's family earns more than $200k/yr, they will get a better tax deal under Obama. This has been confirmed by independent economists (Washington Post graphic and Parade Magazine article).

Economy:
The Economist magazine endorsed Barack Obama. Considering that the magazine is about - you know, the economy - that should count for something on this particular subject. There's also this interesting read about why raising taxes on the rich is good for the economy. Finally, Obama is more likely to end the war sooner, and the money currently spent could be better used here at home.

Health care:
As a recent article confirms, over 50% of doctors actually support a Universal Healthcare Plan (you know - that dirty word that conservative pundits equate to socialism and poor healthcare?). The AMA hasn't recommended either one, but according to several experts, Obama's healthcare plan would be better for the economy. Here's a comparison of Obama's and McCain's healthcare plans. The AMA does give an unbiased description of Obama's plan.

Abortion:
Obama has gotten recommendations from NOW and NARAL. However, if you are against legal and safe abortion, then McCain might be your better choice (Palin definitely - she wants to outlaw ALL abortion). Let's not forget McCain's snarkiness about a "woman's health". Any dissafected Hillary voters should look at their uterus (or their loved one's) and say goodbye to any control over it if they vote McCain.

Gun Control:
Barack Obama describes his positions on numerous topics on his website. Gun control isn't one of them, which says that he won't be focusing on that at all, so you can relax your grip on that rifle. FWIW - Gun ownership rights aren't discussed on McCain's page either, so protecting those rights aren't really in his sights either.

Race:
If this is a problem, then YOU have a problem. Hell, he's half white. Vote for the white half.

Honesty:
This should only be a problem for voters leaning towards McCain. His constantly changing views on nearly everything have to make one wonder if he believes half of what he says. Here is a great master list of his changing positions, but there are numerous other sites as well.

I am still amazed that this late in a campaign that has shown such stark differences between candidates that there are still undecideds. If you didn't see it, I recommend watching the Obama infomercial. It really shows why he wants to be president, and why he is what our country needs right now.

This my last blog before the election, and I'm asking all of you to vote for Barack Obama.

Not for me - for OUR country.

Say gang, since it is Halloween, and Your Loyal TriSec is here not that many miles away from the Witch City (Salem, MA), I suppose I should post the brief story of the Official Blog Martyr, one Mr. Giles Corey.

(And on a side note, I have no idea how Mr. Corey got this prestigious position; I just think it's kinda cool that he was pressed to death with large rocks. But that's just me.)

Giles Corey was arrested on April 18, 1692, along with Mary Warren, Abigail Hobbs, and Bridget Bishop. The following day, they were examined by the authorities, during which Abigail Hobbs confessed to Giles being a wizard.

The court ordered Corey's hands to be tied, and they asked him if it were not enough to "act witchcraft at other times, but must you do it now in face of authority?" He replied, "I am a poor creature and cannot help it." Again, a magistrate exclaimed, "Why do you tell such wicked lies against witnesses?" One of his hands was loosed and the girls were afflicted. He held his head on side, and the heads of the afflicted were held on one side. He drew in his cheeks, and the cheeks of the afflicted were sucked in.

Corey refused to plead (guilty or not guilty), was committed to jail and subsequently arraigned at the September sitting of the court.

As a result of his refusal to plead, on September 17, Sheriff Jonathan Corwin led Corey to a pit in the open field beside the jail and in accordance with the above process, before the Court and witnesses, stripped Giles of his clothing, laid him on the ground in the pit, and placed boards on his chest. Six men then lifted heavy stones, placing them one by one, on his stomach and chest. Giles Corey did not cry out, let alone make a plea.

After two days, Giles was asked three times to plead innocent or guilty to witchcraft. Each time he replied "more weight". More and more rocks were piled onto him, and the Sheriff, from time to time, would stand on the boulders staring down at Corey's bulging eyes. Robert Calef, who was a witness along with other townsfolk, later said, "in the pressing, Giles Corey's tongue was pressed out of his mouth; the Sheriff, with his cane, forced it in again".

Three mouthfuls of bread and water were fed to the old man during his many hours of pain. Finally, Giles Corey cried out at Sheriff Corwin, "More weight" and died.

Happy Halloween, everyone!

Hey Tri - one of these days I'm getting up there to finally see Boston and Salem and all.

Didn't the whole witch trial thing start because of land disputes between upper and lower Salem?

Interesting anecdote about current day Salem..

There is an effort under way to open a Lizzie Borden museum in Salem, however there are two popular movements against it - one by the citizens of Salem who are already a bit peeved at all the traffic created by the whole witching mystique, and the other by the citizens of Fall RiverNew Bedford who think the museum should be opened in the city where Lizzie resided!

Well, I would highly disagree with this list, he doesn't seem to have anything earlier than 1970's or so. Where, if you can watch some of the old one's without comparing them to modern CGI and effects that have advanced in film. For example: Day of the Dead is very scary, yet the zombies, by today's standards, are weak. Still very scary. Nosferatu (1922) was also chilling, and I'd put that on the list.

So glad the ORIGINAL Psycho is on this list. What a great piss-your-pants scary movie that was. And it's followed up by possibly the best horror movie of the past 15 years.

I thought Blair Witch was really freaky too - I think it helped to let myself really get into the website and all the stuff outside of the movie.

Night of the Living Dead still a scary movie to me.

But there was no mention of the original Halloween or Friday the 13th. Ya, I know their slasher films but the first and the in the case or Friday the second have really good stories. For that matter Nightmare on Elm Street is great too.

But I want to know where are the William Castle films for that list.

I think The Shining is truly an amazing film. It's a slow build to a chilling climax (no pun intended... okay, yes it was).

I had a freakout moment when I saw Silence of the Lambs. It was summer, and right in the middle of the basement night vision scene, lightning struck a transformer right outside the theatre. It was BOOM! and the lights went out.

If you sit down to watch it knowing it's fiction, it's not scary at all. When we went, it was being marketed as non-fiction, so by the time you realized "wait a minute - this can't be real", you were already sucked in.

The question is, do the liberal Northeasterners outnumber the conservative Midwesterners?
