Grieving Freedom
Author: Raine    Date: 03/30/2020 12:56:42

I had a day mostly distracted, purposefully, from the sociopathological insane entity that is leading this country into a literal death-spiral.

I woke up this morning and read our loyal Tri-Sec's blog from yesterday. I have to say that for us, staying sheltered and going to the store when needed has not been a particularly hard thing to do. Bob already worked from home three days a week. I am grateful for that, as I am for the fact that we have always found ourselves doing things together.

I am trying not to be scared. It's tough. I miss being around our friends and even though we don't see them every week, the thought of knowing that we cannot is frustrating. It's the freedom that I miss.

That's what it is. I grieve the loss of freedom.

That's what this maladministration has done to our country with its mishandling of this disaster at the start. It's very difficult to accept that. A friend gave me this link the other day and while it didn't make everything better, it helped. Here are the first few answers in the interview:
HBR: People are feeling any number of things right now. Is it right to call some of what they’re feeling grief?

Kessler: Yes, and we’re feeling a number of different griefs. We feel the world has changed, and it has. We know this is temporary, but it doesn’t feel that way, and we realize things will be different. Just as going to the airport is forever different from how it was before 9/11, things will change and this is the point at which they changed. The loss of normalcy; the fear of economic toll; the loss of connection. This is hitting us and we’re grieving. Collectively. We are not used to this kind of collective grief in the air.

You said we’re feeling more than one kind of grief?

Yes, we’re also feeling anticipatory grief. Anticipatory grief is that feeling we get about what the future holds when we’re uncertain. Usually, it centers on death. We feel it when someone gets a dire diagnosis or when we have the normal thought that we’ll lose a parent someday. Anticipatory grief is also more broadly imagined futures. There is a storm coming. There’s something bad out there. With a virus, this kind of grief is so confusing for people. Our primitive mind knows something bad is happening, but you can’t see it. This breaks our sense of safety. We’re feeling that loss of safety. I don’t think we’ve collectively lost our sense of general safety like this. Individually or as smaller groups, people have felt this. But all together, this is new. We are grieving on a micro and a macro level.

What can individuals do to manage all this grief?

Understanding the stages of grief is a start. But whenever I talk about the stages of grief, I have to remind people that the stages aren’t linear and may not happen in this order. It’s not a map but it provides some scaffolding for this unknown world. There’s denial, which we say a lot of early on: This virus won’t affect us. There’s anger: You’re making me stay home and taking away my activities. There’s bargaining: Okay, if I social distance for two weeks everything will be better, right? There’s sadness: I don’t know when this will end. And finally there’s acceptance. This is happening; I have to figure out how to proceed.

For me, it is hard to imagine that as USA citizens, we have it almost ingrained physically and psychologically that above all our spirits are free. Freedom is practically in the United States DNA, and factually in our constitution. We fought a revolution to gain it, and have been trying to expand those freedoms to be ever more inclusive since our founding days. I pray that this is temporary but for now this is happening. Our freedom has been taken away, aided and abetted by a bumbling moronic idiot that wants to be a dictator.

That's where I am this Monday morning.

and -- more than ever.
Raine

Question - filling out the census and can't remember - have they ever asked us for our counties of origin before? Or am I just being super sensitive because of the tire dumpster fire?

It does. Just been very up and down for a bit, didn't want to bring anyone else down because everyone is going though it and worse. Just got the better of me this morning.

Also over the weekend one of the actors (Misha Collins) in my fandom did a group therapy session with a psychologist on instagram - that was helpful too. They were talking about doing it again. I

We've had to change our grocery shopping habits, which is not earth-shattering, but it is annoying. More is the concern when actually venturing out, and the empty shelves at the stores.

We also enjoyed our date nights, and sitting at a bar enjoying a pint or cocktail among strangers. Knowing we can't do that is frustrating.

I missed TriSec's blog yesterday, but will be enjoying the symphonies in his link. For music of a more modern nature, I enjoyed this: All 213 Beatles songs ranked from worst to best. You might disagree with some, but it's a reminder just how prolific they were (and the sheer quantity of amazing compositions) over their short 7 year run as a phenomenon.

Morning folks.

Filing for unemployment today - in spite of the pay cut and not layoff, it seems that we're entitled to some percentage of coverage. We'll see.

Curiously, the Department of Transportation reached out to us; since all the vehicles are in the barn right now, they want to do their annual inspection all at once. I'm actually headed in to base this afternoon to help with some prep work. We expect they'll go over everything with a fine-toothed comb, since everyone has the time to do so now.

It's a funny thing. Will probably feels it, too. I'm a teacher at heart, but I haven't seen any Scouts or Scouters to train in about a month now. Work has been shut down for two weeks, so I have minimal human interaction. My whole career has been in Customer Service - I always talk to people about something, and driving the trolleys now, I'm technically in show business. I entertain a group of 45 people at a time in Boston, and i drive my own stage.

In my sullen youth, I'd be glad of the isolation....but now? I feel like I haven't even been outside in days, even though I took a walk in the woods this past Saturday. (At a private camp - I had the entire place to myself.)

It does feel like end times - oh, not the world, but perhaps it IS actually the "End of the Beginning" regarding the country's death throes. Any one of 50 governors could step up right now and lead us better than this "president".

Good morning!!!

I do feel a bit isolated but I have been in contact with students by e-mail, Google Classroom, and telephone. They had a major essay project due their first day out from the school. As the public libraries closed shortly after that, I extended the deadlines to last Friday. Some did not turn anything in but many stepped up.I plan to record some video lessons this week and do what I can to teach literature.

No teacher whom I know expects us to be back. Doctors call schools "petri dishes" for a reason.

I have some job hunting to do and other things, but I will try to get back to fiction writing again. For years, I focused on economic survival. Ironically, I am in good shape and my brother is so far. (My sister got laid off but she may get some work as well as unemployment.)

Despite the shadows that surround us, I am optimistic about the future -- my personal future and our collective future. My hope is that we will become more compassionate and try to make more of a positive difference in the world.

So, sticking to classical today, I have already listened to symphony #19 on the aforementioned list. ('The Pastorale' my personal favorite Beethoven), and I'm now onto some John Williams.

You may remember a recent lawsuit involving Led Zeppelin, where they were acquitted of plagiarism concerning "Stairway to Heaven". It's not plagiarism to steal your own work, but buried in the "Hook" soundtrack (circa 1991) is "Rey's Theme" from the new Star Wars trilogy, plain as day.

Greetings from rehab. Just had my morning poking and prodding for everything. Blood work, swabbed, urine sample which makes me feel like I am still in the hospital. Not to mention my bed. Watching the Bionic Woman on Cozi TV since I only have broadcast channels here.

Alright, unemployment has been filed. Now what?

At least as an economic victim of COVID-45, and anticipating returning to full employment with the same employer, I don't need to "look for work" in the interim. So this is good.

I mean no offence to New York, Lord knows they need the help, but given the lack of resources in Louisiana, mightn't New Orleans have been a better choice for a hospital ship?

And along the lines of GM switching to manufacture ventilators - how many idle cruise ships, ferries, and other tour vessels are out there that could be converted to field hospitals? Although M*A*S*H units are a thing of the past, the Army still has multiple Combat Support Hospitals that could be deployed...

Why, yu ask?

The administration hasn't ordered them to.

Well, at least the blog "Air Wing" has been busy over the last 24 hours.

Dusted off the sim and my joystick, and everything is working.

"The Maddowan" took to the skies yesterday for the first time in a while.

Got my Martin 4-0-4 out of the hangar for revenue service. Had to swap out the ol' engines for better-sounding radials.

My personal mount is a Pilatus PC-12, but I'm ditching the turboprop as we speak and I'm going to fly that with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, because I can!

Artwork - sim photos coming soon enough.

I've always wanted to learn to fly, so I've considered a flight sim in the past. Maybe now is a good a time as any to give it a shot.

Recommendations are appreciated.

I'm still flying good ol' Microsoft Flight Simulator via Steam Games.

Of course, I've gone full-bore on this for a long time. I've downloaded planes, panels, and accurate sounds from Flightsim.com.

But the 'stock' hangar has quite a varied amount of aircraft to work with.

I am listening to WCPT-820 AM in Chicago right now.

Local host Joan Esposito announced that Marlyand and Virginia have stay at home orders issued. Washington, D.C. will follow suit.

She also mentioned that John Prine's wife reports that the singer is now in stable condition after being in critical condition with COVID-19.

I try to cite sources.

Here are the stories on the news in the Maryland-Virginia-Washington, DC area from WJLA.

Just thinking out loud for a minute. My mother is dead and buried 3 years and 3 months now.

She died from COPD, a progressive, incurable, degenerative lung disease.

ANYONE out there with COPD today - Coronavirus is as good as a death sentence.

Stay home, people....stay home.
