Puttering around on a Saturday
Author: TriSec    Date: 12/06/2008 13:09:52

Good Morning!

This is certainly unusual. When I stopped writing "Libertarian Saturday" regularly, Bob warned me that there would be plenty of times that I'd wake up and say "Well, what the hell am I going to write about this morning?" Today seems to be one of those days.

So, I'll start by pondering the Kennedy Legacy. Most of you know the long and storied tale of the brothers Joseph, John, Robert, and Edward. My senior senator just seems to keep going, and going, and going....but last spring we in Massachusetts took a terrible blow when he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. At the time, I remember remarking that if he makes it to the convention, it could turn into a "farewell".

Fortunately, the senator is still in reasonably good health, is getting the best treatment in the world (thanks to a combination of his gold-plated senatorial health plan and vast personal wealth) and the convention turned into something far better.

As we've seen from the Bush clan, Presidents beget governors, legislators, and maybe even another president. Fortunately, the Kennedy's have been at it longer, and better than the Bushes.

Which leads me to Caroline Kennedy. The only surviving child of The President and Jacqueline, she's long led a private life, out of the limelight, raising her children and quietly working for the causes she believes in. But now, her name has surfaced as a possible candidate for the senate seat once held by her uncle in New York.

WASHINGTON – Caroline Kennedy — daughter of a slain president, niece of senators, and zealous guardian of her own privacy — is interested in the Senate seat once held by her uncle, her cousin says.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he and the rest of the powerful Kennedy clan are urging Caroline to seek the New York governor's appointment to the Senate seat now held by Hillary Rodham Clinton — and added she is ready and seriously considering it.

"I know she's interested," Robert Kennedy, who himself was prominently mentioned for the seat, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Friday. "She spent a lot of her life balancing public service with obligations to her family. Now her children are grown, and she is ready to move onto a bigger stage."

Once Clinton, in line to become secretary of state, is confirmed to President-elect Barack Obama's Cabinet, New York Gov. David Paterson will appoint someone to fill the seat for two years.

The Kennedy family's connections and history cannot force Paterson to choose Caroline, but the family's strong support could increase pressure on him to pick her over lesser-known contenders. For Caroline Kennedy, seeking the Senate seat would be a significant departure from the life she has lived until now, protecting her family's privacy — and her own.

Robert Kennedy said his extended family would come out en masse for her if she does get the appointment and has to run for election in 2010.

"If she runs, you will see more Kennedys than you have ever seen in your life," he said.

An environmental lawyer who took himself out of consideration for the Senate seat earlier this week, Robert Kennedy said he is one of "many, many people" urging her to seek it, partly because of her lifelong advocacy on education issues.

"She's probably one of the leading advocates in the nation on public education," he said. "She feels a lot of the issues she's worked on are in danger of being shunted aside because of the economic crisis."

Democrats said Caroline Kennedy and Paterson have already spoken about the Senate seat, and she is interested.

After two New York Democrats said Kennedy and Paterson were expected to meet privately to discuss the matter Saturday, the governor's spokesman said they do not have a meeting planned.

Kennedy is the daughter of President John F. Kennedy and a niece of brothers Edward and Robert. Robert Kennedy held the New York seat from 1965 until his assassination in 1968. Edward Kennedy has been a senator from Massachusetts since 1963 and still uses the old Senate desk that Caroline's father used as a senator from Massachusetts before he won the presidency in 1960.

As a prominent member of the Kennedy clan, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg is the kind of high-profile, historic figure who could overshadow many other New York politicians hoping to be Paterson's choice.

The governor has said he is in no rush to make a decision, and Clinton is not giving up the seat before she is confirmed to the Cabinet post.

"The governor has not yet reached out to any potential candidates," said Paterson's spokesman, Errol Cockfield. "He has been approached by several candidates. Any discussions related to that selection are private, and the governor will not comment about speculation before a decision is made."

Whoever Paterson appoints would serve for two years and then have to run in a special election in 2010, along with Paterson and New York's senior senator, Charles Schumer. The candidate would then have to run again in 2012.

Now, I don't pretend to know how New Yorkers feel about this...but I do know that Mrs. Schlossberg is no carpetbagger; she's lived in New York City since leaving the White House as a 7-year-old in 1964. She is an attorney, founder of the "Profiles in Courage" award, and president of the Kennedy Library Foundation.

As an old Massachusetts hand, and a second-generation Kennedy voter (my mother's first vote was for President Kennedy in 1960), there is something interesting about this. After all, there has been a member of the Kennedy clan in Washington since 1934.

I'll leave it to the native and transplanted New Yorkers on this blog to ponder this...after all, this will be an appointed, rather than elected replacement, and whoever takes the seat from Senator Clinton will be up for an election on their own merits in 2010.

For all our bluster, I'd have to say we New Englanders have more in common with New York than either of us would care to admit.

Morning everyone.

Off to take the wife to the doctor. Got a cold she can't shake.

I think Caroline would be an excellent choice. I don't know if New York has the same problem as Illinois (a wealth of riches in possible candidates), but it would be interesting to know who the other front-runners are...

I wouldn't have a problem with it. The interesting is that because of the special election, both New York Senators would be running in 2010 because Schumer's seat is also up for re-election in 2010.

I think she would be wonderful... it would be nice to finally have a female Kennedy in office! I don't think that has ever happened, Caroline is smart and knows her stuff.

What I hope for is a candidate that will be strong enough to get thru the elections, because I can bet you bottom to dollar, the republicans will put up a fight.

What is most interesting is that it was supposed to be Patterson that would have taken HRC seat if she became president.

The Love Gov really screwed the pooch in more ways than one on that one.

I wouldn't mind seeing Andrew Cuomo have the seat either.

The Love Gov couldn't keep it under wraps in more ways than one.

More signs of newspaper trouble. Today's Newsday had an announcement that not only were they getting rid of another 50 people but the price of the paper was going up to 75 cents for the daily paper, $1.50 for the Early Sunday edition and $2 for the regular Sunday paper (which right now is $1.59). I guess instead of trying to recoup circulation, they are just going to raise the price for the people who still buy the paper.

OooOOOooo I thought of another good pick for the senate seat... Maurice Hinchey...

HE's a damn good fighting Dem from upstate NY and would really get a lot of the upstate vote in an election in 2010, he also would steal any money away (regarding donations) from a downstater like Schumer.

That is something else to seriously consider... if 2 senators are running in the same year, fundraising becomes a problem, if both are from the NYC area.

well - the reality is that the internet is killing the magazines and newspapers, and they need to figure out how to stay alive. For those of us that like to have the newspaper in their hands, paying a little extra is worth it.

We have a local free weekly that is struggling as well. I would be willing to pay for it, if it meant keeping it in print.

Just went out shopping. The parking lot at Best Buy might be 1/3 full, if that. Wow. Guess a little depression might do that.

Evening, folks!

First day out at Mr. Bean's emporium....there's something strangely satisfying in moving things, lifting, sorting, stacking, etc. Quite the change from staring into a computer all day.

The store wasn't terribly busy, although we got 'blitzed' at around 3 this afternoon.

Anyway....looks like it was a quiet Saturday around these parts.

This one is for Random... After all he gave us a link to the hilarious video of the guy getting ready to protest in front of that building that looked like a 'greek castle', and the directions and stuff... (one of my fave youtubes in a long time) I think Random deserves a follow up.

Well the protest happened.... massive crowds.

And with that... seeyamarah. ;)

I will be busy getting my new computer set up and moving files and reorganizing... it is like the day AFTER christmas when you can finally spend quality time with all those fancy toys!
