knee-jerk (nee-jurk)
adj. Slang

  1. Easily predictable; automatic: "quick, easy laughs and knee-jerk responses" (New York).

  2. Reacting spontaneously in the expected manner: a knee-jerk cynic.

If the last 8 years under Bush (compared to the last 100+ days under Obama) have taught us anything, it's that automated reflexive responses to stimuli are not the best way to run a country. Some of us have declared the right-wing (and their supporters in the media) to be insane, but it seems that they live up to the definition, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

When the Iraq war was being "planned" and Bush was soliciting support from our NATO allies, France was not just a hold-out of the invasion, but a critic. The theatrical displays of outrage among the armchair warriors were instant and over the top. We had Freedom Fries and people pouring out French wine in protest. John Kerry was "accused" of "looking French" as if that said all that needed to be said about his character.

So now we have another case of a foreign country dissing one of America's heroes: Michael Savage. Apparently, his hate speech is more incendiary than they can stomach as they try to keep the peace with a growing Muslim population, so he has been banned from entering the UK:
Britain on Tuesday published its first list of people barred from entering the country for allegedly fostering extremism or hatred, including Muslim extremists, a right-wing American radio host, an Israeli settler and jailed Russian gang members.

The U.K.'s law and order chief, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, said she decided to publish the names of 16 of 22 people who have been banned by the government since October so others could better understand what sort of behavior Britain was not prepared to tolerate.

Naturally, the right-wing is apoplectic about this obvious attack on Freedom of Speech. Well - Bill O'Reilly is anyway. How long before we hear about "Freedom Muffins" and "Freedom Ivy"? Will protesters pour out their Bass Ale? (as if -- We know right-wingers all drink Bud)

Apparently no one told Sean Hannity that England has replaced France as the latest freedom-hating terrorist-loving surrender monkey... country. He has called President Obama elitist for - GASP - asking for Dijon mustard!! Yes, apparently unless you want plain old yellow mustard, you must be an elitist. You know - that plain old yellow mustard you get at the grocery? What is it called?... Oh yeah:

So mustard with "French's" on the label is American, and mustard with a French word in the name is elitist - got it. Just wondering though: after Hannity derided President Obama for being elite, I wonder what kind of mustard he used on his private jet?

Not that it would matter - no one puts mustard on Freedom Muffins...
