Today is caucus day in Iowa. It's going to be cold but it doesn't look like the weather will be a reason not to turn out. That is good news. Seems like many students are going back to campus early so they can caucus. That could be very good news for Obama, since he is said to be popular among the college crowd. It also makes for a rather undecided race.

Bill Richardson is set to throw his support toward Obama. Just like Dennis, this is in case he finds himself not getting the 15% of the vote. So that is that. With Bill, I am not surprised at this move. Dennis tho, that one is going to take some time for it to sink and and digest.

It looks like Obama may win Iowa, but as I skim the papers across the internet this morning, there is a far greater sense of uncertainty for this race this morning. Who will take second? Who knows. The media reluctantly admits that Obama is in the lead, and with all of the independent and undecided voters, I am just not sure that Edwards will take third as they are predicting. If nothing else, I am glad that the race is still so tight. We are lucky as dems and progressives to have such a good pool of candidates.

The Republicans, that is going to be very interesting. McCain is getting a lot of traction despite the fact that he hasn't campaigned there, and Mitt has pretty gone door to door handing out Dollars bills and puppy dogs to get the support, but in Iowa, it looks like It could Be Huckabee. Rudy has dropped to 5% in Iowa. How the might have fallen. The pew center actually is reporting that McCain has taken the lead nationally. Look for that entire race to get dirtier with far more mud to be slung.

The most interesting thing to me about today, is the fact that The Des Moines Register is teaming up with YouTube to report on the caucus'. IT will be nice to get a more unfiltered View from the campaign than what we have been getting from MSN. Already there are some cute user vids there. Plus it is always nice to see Americans participating in one of the most important things we can do. Elect our leaders.

Brr. It is cold, so I'll see you inside the blog where the fireplace is going and the hot cocoa is extra dark today. It is 15 degrees here in the Atl this morning... Warmth is a good thing.

Rachel is asking on (yesterday's show) if you were an Iowan, where would you caucus?

Of course my first answer is "Palm Beach, Florida", but I don't think that's a viable option today. (checks, it's 42º at PBI this morning)

Despite our endorsement of Edwards, I would still caucus with Bill Richardson. I tend to elect presidents based on their foreign policy experience, and Bill has the background. Check him out!

But now my second choice will be Edwards, and when the primaries reach this Commonwealth on February 5th, Richardson-Edwards will be my #1 and #2, depending on who is still in the race at that point. (and screw 'em, maybe I'll write one or both in if the picture changes that dramatically by then.)

The libertarian in me still wants to look over Ron Paul....but after his stance on the war, the rest of his policies and plans rather alarm me.

Of course, I've been known to "cross the lines" and vote against someone on the other side. Most notably for John McCain in 2000, which was really against GWB. (Ah, would that we could have the 2000 McCain running again this year, that would make for an interesting campaign.) I did vote for Al in the general election that year, BTW.

At this point, I think Edwards would be fine if he took 2nd place in today's caucus.

You know, regarding Richardson, I would love to see him in the State department. I would also be pleased with Biden, but to me the rub is that then we lose a member of congress.. and that makes me nervous. I do not want to lose any people that are already seated.

OMG, I forgot to tell you guys!!!!

I went to a New Year's Eve party chock full of people who were out of my league.

I got chatting with one guy about politics. He was an Ortho Surgeon who had, GET THIS, been at Harvard with Benazir Bhutto.

He said he and his friends had called her a "No Fly Zone," as she was completely stunning and intimidated the sh*t out of them! How cool is that?

I thought about that too, the battery back up and the financial. Batteries, I'm always forgetting to charge my phone and in fact right now it's barely holding a charge - I need a new phone any way mine's 4 years old so I don't want to buy a new battery.

Financially - it's only about $30 a month and I split that with Mommers so I think can swing $15 for emergency.

I know lots of people who only have cell phones and they love it. I guess I'm just old-fashioned about that stuff.

Oh and on the "old" note - For Christmas I got a new set of ear buds from phillips, I was never excited to change from the ones that came from my iPod. Pulled them out of the package and noticed one wire was shorter then the other so I took them back to Best Buy to exchange them thinking it was just a manufacturing mistake, no big deal. GUy at the desk told me that's how they make them know, you wear them BEHIND your head. SHowed me how to wear them and everything. He was very nice, said he got that question alot and figured it out from people at his gym.

All I could think - "I feel old"

Good morning, bloggers!!!

Happy New Year!!!

I think that Kucinich endorsing Obama is a strategic move. The candidate that Kucinich probably does NOT want to see come in first is Hillary Clinton. So, that may explain why Kucinich wants to ensure that Obama is in first or second.

Also, I heard Thom Hartmann on WCPT AM 820 last night. I caught part of an interview with Kucinich. Kucinich said something about a former campaign manager of Edwards being on the staff of a 527 organization and that being improper or illegal. (I only caught part of it.)

Right now, a Reuters/Zogby poll reports that Obama is ahead of Edwards with Clinton in third place.

By the way, there will be a Caucus chat at Democracy Interactive about 8 PM Eastern/ 7 PM Central. A few good people from UNN will be there as well.

As Thom Hartmann noted, most of the media pundits are multi-millionaires who don't hang out with the common folk anymore. Hillary is friendlier to their aganda than any of the other Democratic candidates (well maybe Obama is also there) and also why they have largely given Bush a pass.

The Fourth Estate is supposed to be there to challenge the powers that be to keep them honest not lie in bed with them and cozy up to their agenda.

Heya Will! ... That person Dennis is talking about was Edwards campaign manger back in 2004. he has not been on this staff at all. Plus, I find it interesting that dennis would throw this kind of mud and Support Obama, who actually has members on his campiagn staff that were former members of 527's.
Members of Obama's staff have their own past ties to 527 groups. Obama's communications director and one of his closest advisers was once employed by a group that ran a television ad shortly before the 2004 Iowa caucuses that used a picture of bin Laden to criticize former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean's foreign policy credentials at a point when Dean was the Democratic front-runner. At the time, Robert Gibbs was working with a shadowy group called Americans for Jobs, Health Care & Progressive Values. The group paid for the ad but refused to disclose in a timely manner who was financing the effort because federal law did not require it to do so. Shortly after the ads started running, a labor union that had endorsed Democratic rival Richard Gephardt of Missouri acknowledged contributing $50,000 to the group, but said the ads had gone too far. The group had begun running ads in Iowa in early December 2003. One that ran before the bin Laden ad had featured Dean, side-by-side with President Bush, and compared their records of support for the National Rifle Association.

As I said, Raine, I only came into the comments after they had started. SO, I may not have fully understood Kucinich, although he did seem to hint at some sort of collusion.

As things stand, I don't expect most people to care if any past or current members of a campaign are in 527s. (I personally don't like 527s much.) The big issues to most voters are the economy (or should I say economic insecurity) and the war.

Also, if a Democrat gets into office next year, that person will have a clean up task comparable to Herucles and the Augean stables. (Herc had to divert a river to clean up the mess.)

Oh I understand will, didn't mean to come off the wrong way. What I do know is that Iwas not liking dennis very much in that interview yesterday. HE really seemed very defensive. I despise the 527's, but until someone moves to change the situation, they are still legal. And legaly a candidate cannot say yay or nay to an ad, despite the fact that Obama is calling for edwards to denounce. A candidate can express non satisfaction, but if they order those ads removed, they will be viewed os being obstuctionist.

Edwards has said he would move to make them illegal.

Exactly.

I have not heard anyone say "Black Agenda" but, it's early.

you know this is the key for Iowa. A lot of the seconds votes, the ones that go for Dodd and Biden... thier second choice may very well be for Edwards. I do not think the polls are taking second choices into consideration. Kucinich and Richardson may have asked that the second choice be for Obama, but I still think edwards has a better chance than people in the media are giving him.

What's a gay agenda? I am STILL waiting for my copy so I can get to work on it.

Over at UNN, we used to have a radio podcast show called The Gay Agenda, but one of the hosts left. There was some discussion of reviving it.

So let's see what Obama has to say...

Comment by Raine on 01/04/2008 04:05:40
I notice he's using teleprompters - I didn't notice that with Edwards...

I thought he was just going to say "When my little daughters and your little daughters can play together. . . when a man will be judged not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character. . . "

Poor Dodd....I can't believe that happened to him. That totally sucks.

Comment by livingonli on 01/04/2008 04:20:37
What a weird segue into Biden's bow-out speech. So, we lost two candidates already tonight.

Comment by Raine on 01/04/2008 04:20:45
Dodd's dropping out too???

Christ - I understand why states want to go early... if you're one of the later states, you have a choice of one or two candidates...

I remember in 2004 because the New York primary was in April, we were already down to just Kerry and Kucinich by the time our primary came about. (I'm trying to remember if Edwards was still in the race at that point).
