The nation has another primary under its belt. As we all know by now, Hillary took the state with Obama in 2nd and Edwards in 3rd. On the Republican side, McCain took the state (not a big surprise there), followed by Romney and Huckabee a distant 3rd. 9ui11iani barely beat out Ron Paul for 4th, which shows just how much a tailspin his campaign is in, and how energized the Ron Paul supporters are.

McCain was called very early, not long after the polls closed. Hillary, however, wasn't called until much later. It was very close all night long, which really helped maintain the level of excitement. It gave us all a chance to watch the pundits blather and eat crow and gaze at their navels (they predicted an Obama blow out).

The concession speeches were the real show. First up was Huckabee, sans the floating head of Chuck Norris -w- teeth, giving another earnest-appearing speech to rally his base. He now has a 1st and a 3rd (same as Hillary), so he's got no reason to sweat - yet.

Edwards was next after a long introduction by Elizabeth, and a long hand-shaking walk to the stage (which seemed to irritate Keith Olbermann). He used the opportunity to once again get his message out, which I must admit could use a little updating. Yes we know your father worked in the mills, yes we know about the girl that died because of the health insurance company, yes we know about the cleft-pallette guy. Please, John, mix it up a little. Regardless, it was still inspiring and earnest, so good on him.

Romney (with what looked like the entire Mormon compound) gave a short speech. No biggie.

McCain then came on to give his winner's speech. After Huckabee and Edwards, it was a little sad. McCain was dull, dull, dull. He also kept his nose in his notes, barely looking up. Was it the weight of his chipmunk cheeks dragging his head down? The speech itself seemed like a series of disjointed talking points. The pundits were laughing, saying it sounded like every staffer wrote one line. Note to John: MEMORIZE YOUR SPEECH!

Or - you could do like Obama and use a teleprompter. As Obama was speaking, it became clear that he kept swiveling his head back and forth to the same two exact positions, and focusing his eyes on the same places. It was obvious he was reading his speech. To the casual viewer, it may have seemed like he was just looking out to the audience, but if you watched carefully, it wasn't so. Such is the magic of the transparent teleprompter. It was still an inspiring speech (and more of a positive message than Edwards), but the reading thing was distracting.

Finally, Hillary gave her winners speech. By this time, I was occupied doing other things, so I missed most of it. Even us intrepid reporters have to have a life, ya know...

So - as John Edwards put it: 99% of the country still haven't had their voices heard in this democratic process, so let's not read too much into these two early states. There are several more in the wings for January, and Super Tuesday is less than a month away!

377 days until Bush vacates the White House (and counting...)

Hello,

Anybody out there? Thoughts on Hillary's victory - I am bummed, because from where I sit here in red Oklahoma - Hillary is just not gonna be electable. Whereas I was excited about the possibility of Obama (although I must agree with you all that Edwards is the better candidate), I'm back to being worried that the Dems may lose the whole thang, but it's early yet. Vamos a ver...

Cheers,

Faye

Welcome aboard, m-hadley!

Coffee and donuts in the back...

Things will pick up after 9am when the Stephanie Miller News Program gets rolling.

I'm in the next state south, so I'm pleased that McCain won, because that means Romney didn't!!!

All Hilary's win proves is that the race is still wide open. We'll see who the MSM annoints as their standard-bearer next...

Hello, TriSec and welcome aboard m-hadley.

We must remember that most nominations in the Democratic or Republican primary are not decided by just the first two contests. There are many contests ahead, and I think that we will see strong efforts by Obama and Clinton to retool their campaigns. I wonder what the third place finishers and others who finished even lower in each party will do. Edwards may try to compete for a while, but unless he has several significant victories by the end of Super Tuesday, he may not be able to compete. (Politics is not only the art of the possible, it is also about having enough resources.) The campaign is very far from over.

The Unfiltered News Network Headlines for Wednesday are still being worked on, but feel free to take a look.

It's fun in here - did you all hear my call-in to the SMS this morning? As I've said over and over I worry that Hillary is just NOT going to win a national contest, plus I had to tell Momma that she is not alone in her Obama corner.

Unhappy with the Hillary win, but rather happy about McCain, for the same reason that TriSec mentioned, just glad that Huckabee lost!! He'll do well in SC also I believe.

As for me, I sucked at my job interview yesterday. They asked my a lot of questions about me, not my skill level of the job. CRAP!! We'll see.

Listening to TRMS this am...Paul Rieckhoff will be aboard in a bit as a pundit, instead of an Ask a Vet segment...Paul and Rachel both are "Iraq Voters", where the war is priority #1.

Me too, but the domestic financial crisis would have to be #2, I think.

I did, and I think that the GOP is eager to run against Hillary Clinton, as their strategists have anticipated she would be the candidate. Plus, the Clintons are something that the GOP can hold up as symbols to their base of all that they oppose.

The thing about Hillary, is her intrinsic divisiveness.

Either she's the greatest thing sliced bread, or she's the antichrist; there doesn't seem to be any middle ground.

Even for us Dems....somebody else that you're not sure about, you can have a discussion, do the research, listen and make up your mind. I'm not seeing that with Hillary.

Of course the GOP wants her to run; as it's been said before, if she loses, they've defeated the Clintons again and all is well in their world, if she wins, she's "Republican Lite" and not much is going to change.

Our own Raine conveyed a quote from the Randi Rhodes show a few days back..."How can she be for change when she's literally married to the past?"

This was reported to me by a friend in Cambridge, MA:

NH apparently voted on paper

When New Hampshire voters go to the polls today, they will use paper ballots, not the computerized voting machines that have come under scrutiny because of their alleged vulnerabilities to hacking and glitches.

And here are samples of the Democratic ballot and the Republican ballot.

Reading through the sample ballots, Sen. Barack Obama doesn't have the most unusual name. That would go to "Vermin Supreme" a street theater artist who's on the Republican ballot.

Then there's a candidate some might confuse with the Illinois senator, considering all the hope and expectations being placed on the Chicagoan. That would be O. Savior on the Democratic ballot.

And Torchwood will be airing on BBC America just a few days after its UK airing. No word yet on when Sci-Fi will run Doctor Who. If they run it in the spring, it will be pretty close to the UK airing.

Canadian viewers got to see Season One of Doctor Who almost in sync with the UK airing because they had no NHL playoff coverage that year due to the lockout.

Rebbecca put me on hold immediately probably due to the chaotic din on my side.

There's also a local progressive radio lady there and she comes on right before Thom. Morning and Noon and that's it. I've been given the impression that the rest of the programming is pretty conservative.

But there's also a full 24/7 conservative station which shows that the public is *not* being served on the airwaves.

I want a *real* progressive radio station in my home town. Most people I've talked to out there don't even know progressive radio exists!

ShelaghC, I would love to have a full-time progressive station in Chicago. (Okay, you can stream AM 820, but it is still not the same thing.) At least the signal is better on our daytimer, and there are some more billboards out.

Getting a station in a market like Chicago is not easy, but other stations have made the jump from daytime to full-time stations. The SCORE, WSCR, used to be on AM 820 before taking up the signal at AM 670. So, I hope that the management at WCPT are looking for a stronger, 24-hour signal.

Boston has been without a progressive outlet since our Air America station flipped to Spanish programming a while back. There was a brief grassroots effort to save it, but I don't know if the group exists anymore.

If we can't have a station in what is arguably ground zero for the liberal movement (with apologies to the fine people in SFO and elsewhere), I wouldn't hold out much hope for anywhere else.

WCPT may only be daylight, but it's more than Pittsburgh has. On Sunday I can drive around and listen to Sam. During the week, I can listen to Stephanie on the way to work (when I had a job ) or Randi on the way home.

Don't get me started about the disparity over stations!!! GRRRRRR. Why is our Progressive station (which also has news, traffic and weather) called "liberal talk" while our Station that features Rush, Beck, Hannity and Savage called "News Talk"? If your visiting our town, you'd turn on the News talk and get hate speech.

96.9, WTKK in this city, is the right-wing outlet.

They broadcast from the top of the Prudential Center with a 100,000 watt signal. When we did have liberal radio, it was with a miserable little 4,000 watt signal broadcast from Medford, and it went in and out depending on the terrain.

Of course, the grandaddy of them all at WBZ-1030, also broadcasts from the Pru at 100,000 watts...I've heard them in West Palm Beach, FL. They are a true 'news' station, though.

Atlanta had a full AAR station for one year (AirAtlanta), but the owner flipped it to Arts (music, art discussion, radio theatre). He kept Al Franken until Al quit. I'd be more pissed, but they play cool old (20's-30's) music, scenes from movies... it's a very different kind of station.

And drinking gin. My second attempt, actually. The first one wound up all over the kitchen counter, but I saved the glass!

Oh dear! I am so sorry!

It sounds like he did a story with no research and pulled it out of his ass. About the standard of journalism that they practice there.

So, we may soon be taking down that Richardson ad?

Rach is indeed correct, McCain looked so uninspried.

WE are gonna wait for the official press release from the campaign... I wanted to announce that hunter was out a few days ago... and yet, he is still not out.

Once we get official notice from them, we will sadly take his ad down.

I hate to see any of them leave.

So, Ghouilaini was in New Hampshire many times and the pundits are making like he didn't actively campaign. I smell a big, whopping lie there.

So, with all those public appearances and a 4th place finish prove the more you know about him the less you like him.

you know, I am gald you said that. I know Rudy wasn't as active as McCain in NH, but I thought he did spend a lot of time there.

He DID campagn there. The media is twisting this the way the campaign wants it twisted. And as I said earler... for a man who says he will be on the offensive on the war on terror™, he certainly is not doing that with his campaign

I haven't had a chance to check the MB today. I like that the ugly side of Ron Paul is starting to be exposed and more people should know that aside from his anti-war views we have a guy with some very ugly views. He doesn't sound like a Libertarian, but more like a right-wing extremist wacko who seems to be happy in the circles of Birchers, militia backers and neo-nazis.

Comment by livingonli on 01/10/2008 03:04:15
It seems like with all the political stuff they are pulling the documentaries and re-running Keith at 10, Tweety at 11 and Dan at 1 AM.

Yankee 406-heave to center...

Our patrol circle is finished, there's nothing out here.

We're heading back to base.

I still think tht hill won, I do. I thinkthe repubs came out in droves for her. but the Ron Paul vote.... Ron Paul scares the hell out of the party.

When will America wake up?

Comment by Raine on 01/10/2008 03:15:43
So fucked up. the situation is so fuckedf up.

IF a comapny owns the machines, they should be remoed from the counting process.

I think I MAY have a topic.

Or not... depends on what hppens in the overnight.

Jesus. The thing that bugs me right now is that the voting irregularities may be affecting the Republicans (ie: Ron Paul)

It bothered me then, and it bothers me now. If Paul did better in NH than has been shown, there is a serious problem. ON MANY SIDES.

I do not like voter fraud.

That's right. The crazy people who think the tax is unconstitutional despite the amendment (the wackos say it's not legit).
