So now it's the sexism? or is it, really?
Author: Raine    Date: 02/11/2008 13:03:44

The Clinton Campaign is starting to really worry me. In case you all were not aware, David Schuster was suspended from MSNBC. Here is the comment in context, and the morning after... :

The Clintons, however took it to nth degree, IMO.
From the WSJ, on Friday:
The controversial comment also could imperil Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's, D-N.Y., participation in future presidential debates on the network, a Clinton spokesman said.

It seems it was all a misunderstanding tho. Oh silly media. The Clinton's just want MSNBC to clean up their act... From ABC NEWS...
After some conversations with folks at the Clinton campaign, I can offer some clarity -- maybe -- on what they're asking NBC/MSNBC to do.

And despite Clinton's letter, saying David Martin Shuster's apology and suspension was not sufficient, Clinton's goal is not for NBC to fire Shuster, he and his fans will be happy to hear. Until Thursday, the Clinton campaign had no issues with Shuster, I'm told.

The campaign says it has more to do with what it sees as a sexist, locker room, on-air atmosphere at MSNBC.

Clinton supporters ask: what other network has had, within the space of one year, because of comments widely seen as boorish and inappropriate, a firing (Imus), an on-air apology (Chris Matthews) and a suspension (Shuster)?

Clinton, who has been on the receiving end in two of those incidents, is taking a stand for MSNBC to clean up its act. Or, so Camp Clinton says.
Is this true? A presidential campaign is asking a news network to DO something, NOW that it affects them?... Or: Is this another version of race-gate that we had last month? (which in my minds eye was one great big publicity stunt.)

I have to question why ALL of a sudden the Clinton campaign is concerned about sexism on the airwaves. Why now suddenly, when it affects her 27 year old daughter who they STILL have off limits to reporters?

Where was Hillary when Ann Coulter attacked Elizabeth Edwards? OR John Edwards? OR Al Gore? OR HER??? The Hillary Bashing on a certain *nooz* network is legendary and well documented.

MSNBC has it's own problems as well. Tweety and Morning Joe and Tucker... those are well documented as well. I won't deny that. I am not excusing David Schuster for his words, and I am glad that MSNBC took action, but for the Clinton Campaign to interject themselves like this into the situation is unacceptable to me.

It's intimidation. I for one am tired of it. We have had 7 years of media intimidation. In this day and age we Americans NEED something different...

We already have an administration that threatened and pressured the media into telling a story the way they wanted it told. Remember the pressure Scooter Libby and the VP's office placed on MSNBC to get Chris Matthews to shut up about Plame-gate? Slate Magazine mentioned just a touch of this back in November 2005.

What the Clinton campaign is doing by threatening to not debate on this channel is a little too similar to me. This concerns me. It's not the race, it's not the sexism, it's hypocrisy of the Clinton campaign. Never before has a comment made this campaign threaten to pull out of a debate. Actually she agreed to go on a Fox News Channel debate!

In all the hubbub this is the key to all of this. It was sexist. Schuster got suspended. Matthews didn't. Scarborough hasn't and both have said far worse directly aimed at AND about Senator Clinton. David didn't say anything about Chelsea, his comment was about how the campaign was using Chelsea. Was it in bad form? IMO, YES. I am not excusing it. But Chelsea is 27 years old. Either she is in the Clinton machine or she is out. She still won't grant interviews and the Clinton's are still treating her like she is a child. She is no longer a child. She still hasn't given a comment to this issue. She should be able to fight her own battles at this age. Either she is in the political game, or she isn't, but her Mom and Dad cannot keep protecting her.

As to the debate issue, this is ridiculous. lf ever there were a clear cut case of serious oversensitivity with the Clinton camp this is it. This actually makes them look weak, the way bullies look weak.

I mean, come on, the Clinton's both are touting the fact that they are very good friends with John McCain, when it was McCain who said that Chelsea was so 'ugly becuase she was actually the daughter of Janet Reno'... or did everyone forget that little bit if nastiness? Is Senator Clinton going to refuse a debate with Senator McCain if she gets the nomination?

It just seems like the Clintons are using this whole thing to exercise some kind of power they want to have over the media. If a Democratic Candidate agrees to go on Faux news for a debate... with all of the crap they pull... and instead threatens another network with a no-show over something that was stupid, but not part of a pattern of maliciousness, by one reporter, then I have to question motives, and the only thing I see is that this is a power play for the media.

Or... like race-gate in January, perhaps it's just another case of it's not the Clintons' fault. Both scenarios make me very uneasy. Then last night I stumbled across this video of a Clinton rally
A dissenter wearing a "Not Another Clinton" Shirt was threatened with arrest. The cumulative affect of all this *stuff*, from dissenters, to the media, to Bill yelling at reporters, all of it coming from the Clinton campaign gives me a rather Bushian feeling. I don't want anymore of this Media-crisy from the government. Maybe I am just shell shocked from the last 7 years, but I am tired of this behavour and this attitude from those that want our votes.

Anyway, it is monday... I hope to see you inside, we we have nationalized continental breakfast!

:peace: and
Raine

Mornin' everybody,

I am sharing this piece that I received from some friends(?) who are rabid Hillary supporters. It didn't sit well with me at the time, but Raine has articulated much better than I could the reason why we should all question this Shrillary "Cryin' wolf" schtick...

The Media Matters story was prefaced with these words, "The story below "isn't about Hillary Clinton's campaign. This is about a consistent pattern of misogynistic comments by Chris Matthews. Comments about and directed toward a variety of women. A consistent pattern of Matthews objectifying women. And a consistent pattern of MSNBC looking the other way." Sadly, Keith Olbermann was doing it too the other night. . . ."

I am not fan of Tweety, but I do think that Clintons are protesting a skosh too much, just MHO... Hope everybody has a good day ;)

Bush orders clampdown on flight into the United States...

HEre is the kicker from the article found in the guardian:
Washington is also asking European airlines to provide personal data on non-travellers - for example family members - who are allowed beyond departure barriers to help elderly, young or ill passengers to board aircraft flying to America, a demand the airlines reject as "absurd".

Hillary is a politician. That means she's interested in only one thing; raising money. And anything and everything she can use to do it, including any and all Rovian tactics, is fair game.

Somewhere, I can see Darth Cheney hiding in a corner, hissing at her, "You have done well, my young apprentice...."

"And then there's MSNBC host Tucker Carlson, who has described Hillary Clinton as "whining" and suggested the reason there are so few women in Congress is that "most women are so sensible, they don't want to get involved in something as stupid as politics" and said of Clinton, "then she comes on television, I involuntarily cross my legs," and described her as "castrating, overbearing, and scary." (MSNBC can't say they didn't know what they were getting when they hired Carlson; before joining the cable channel, he said women "want to be spanked vigorously every once in a while" and told Elle magazine that Clinton is his "guilty fantasy," explaining: "Every time I see her I think I could, you know, help. ... She seems tense.")

I wonder if it becuase of things like this that caused the campaign shake up. If the campaign isn't reaching out to local Dem groups, that is pretty bad.

Good morning, bloggers!!

I hope that everyone is well.

As for the Clintons, the behavior that Raine discussed gives me the impression that there is a sense of entitlement in the campaign. I find this troubling, because a candidate running for president should represent the interests of the people. I do not like a political campaign or an administration trying to intimidate the media - even if some media personalities have shown poor judgement and made some highly questionable comments.

Also, is it me, or do these and a few other moves (ahem, firing the campaign manager) seem like desperation tactics.

By the way, the early edition of the Unfiltered News Network Daily Headlines are up. You might be interested in this one: Clinton seeks to cast herself as underdog vs. Obama. Somehow, Clinton calling someone else an establishment candidate seems odd when she touts her record of experience.

Good morning: Part 2 - Return to Blog!!

A few hours of sleep and I'm good to go.............. grocery shopping and cleaning out my ARC disaster relief truck to be ready for a new disaster.

Raine, great subject for the blog. I'm not awake enough to know exactly how I feel, but I do know this: "pimped out" is, imo, as hateful as n*igger or wh*re - having nothing to do with race necessarily. If you'll remember my blog yesterday, I had "pimps" top the list of useless people that take up space on our planet. How this word became popular in our vernacular is beyond me!!

So, I think that David deserves to be reprimanded, though not fired. (To be fair, I thought that Imus should not have been fired, just suspended and fined).

I suppose there is something to the fact that Hillary is a mother and protective of her child, and so looks past the sexist comments made about her, but puts on the armor for her daughter. I don't like that, but I understand it.

No word yet on how they are scheduling it. Doctor Who is already somewhat trimmed for commercials except for the Christmas Episode which runs in a 90-minute slot. "Last of the Time Lords" at the end of Season Three was originally 51-minutes in the UK so they cut it to 44 minutes to fit it into a 60-minute slot with commercials.

What experience does she have exactly? She has less legislative experience than Obama.

That is part of my concern as well. If Hillary Clinton wants to tout her time as a first lady in Arkansas and Washington as well as being an attorney, then Obama can rightly claim his experience as an activist. Hillary Clinton is trying to claim she was a major factor in her husband's administration when in the past she denied such a role.

I am puzzled by much going on in the Clinton campaign. To me, it seems as if there is a sense of confusion, of bewilderment that not all is going as planned. So, I am troubled by a response to the press that seems hostile and as high handed as the Bush administration. (I don't think any Democratic candidate should go to a debate on the Fox Channel as their ideological bias is clear.)

To me, the way to make a political movement is to be constantly active in it - including in non-election years. So, I think that it is up to us to either transform the Democratic Party by pushing to make it more progressive or start a third party. (I am skeptical about third parties, as the last time one became a national party that won the presidency was in 1860. That was the Republican party.)

Yeah, but because Ross Perot created a short-lived viable third party, there was a *real* race in 1992. 'tis a pity more third parties aren't as strong right out of the gate.

Perot's party was a rare exception, and I think it might have become an established party if he would have tried to support it and give it some depth on a national level. The same could happen with the Green Party, but it will require building a party infrastructure.

And yet, none of these people were Suspended: (from Raw Story

CNN HeadlineNews' host Glenn Beck labeled anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan a "pretty big prostitute" and "tragedy pimp" during his conservative radio show, for which he was declared Olbermann's "Worst Person in the World". Beck then accused Sheehan of "pimping out her own son's death". Those instances were all noted by watchdog Media Matters, which also first pointed out Schuster's comments.

Fox News apparently doesn't have a problem with "pimp" being used as a political attack on its own network, either. Although you wouldn't know that from Monday morning's segment.

Conservative host Sean Hannity agreed with a guest's assessment that Al Gore was "pimping" the environment for political gain, and he featured as a guest a pastor who said Democrats -- but not Republicans, of course -- "pimp" the church to snag votes. Of course, Hannity, too, couldn't resist a dig at MSNBC after Schuster's comments last week, calling them despicable ... inappropriate, out of touch, out of line."

Once again I get the feeling that Ed is saying (without actually listening to his show, but relying on our cub reporters) that it is alright to use these words as common vernacular when discussing women. It isn't.

I ALMOST made my post about the MEDIA and how they like to throw these terms around. Do I want them all fired? NO. I want them to know that woman are equals. I want them to stop talking about women with these terms.

I still stand on my belief that MSNBC was right in suspending him. The interjection of the campaign is where I am having serious questions about.

It is a very good and fair question to ask regarding where would the Clinton campaign stand if they said nothing. I guess, to be as honest as I could be, I wish we could have heard from Chelsea. The show was prerecorded, but I will watch it. (No tickets - my friend is only one of the back up singers, but it is a good break for her. She has one of the best voices I know and has been working hard on her own career for years.) So, I will likely check in after the show. (I am asking Robin to send me a link to some of her music.)
