Good Morning.

It's strangely quiet on the veteran's front today.

Maybe because we're no longer at war? We are completely out of Afghanistan, and a mere 2,500 US troops remain in Iraq these days.

But of course, it's only a matter of time before the next global 'flareup' occurs. We'll certainly have troops nearby and ready to start the next war protect our interests.

https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/INTERACTIVE-US-military-presence-around-the-world.png?w=770&resize=770%2C770

The above chart comes from Al-Jazeera. There is an extensive article accompanying the graphic, and it reveals the vast reach of the military might of the United States.

According to David Vine, professor of political anthropology at the American University in Washington, DC, the US had around 750 bases in at least 80 countries as of July 2021.

The actual number may be even higher as not all data is published by the Pentagon.

With 120 active bases, Japan has the highest number of US bases in the world followed by Germany with 119 and South Korea with 73.

US military base sites fall under two main categories:

Large bases or “Bases”: Defined as military installations larger than 4 hectares (10 acres) or worth more than $10 million. These bases typically have in excess of 200 US military personnel. 439 or 60 percent of the US’s foreign bases fall under this category.

Small bases or “Lily Pads”: These bases are smaller than 4 hectares(10 acres) or have a value of less than $10 million. These include cooperative security locations and forward operating sites. The remaining 40 percent of US foreign bases fall under this category.

According to global US military deployment data published in the Conflict Management and Peace Science Journal, the US had around 173,000 troops deployed in 159 countries as of 2020.

Like the US bases, the countries with the most number of US troops include Japan with 53,700, Germany with 33,900 and South Korea with 26,400.

Claiming "secrecy", there's actually no official tally of how many bases there are around the world, or even within the United States. But you can look at that list too. Of course, the southern and red states are heavy with their presence.

Given that the President now has supreme command over a vast, global empire - haven't we essentially become what we rebelled against on a cold April morning so long ago?

Afternoon all!

Just saw that GA Gov. Kemp's sister-in-law died from COVID. Ya think that might change his mind at all?

On the West Coast, it is far from lunch. I am playing a waiting game with IT to get my LAUSD email activated and have other stuff to do before I go into my room late this afternoon. Then, I am at the school Wednesday.

Reading today's blog, I have to wonder how much money we've wasted being the world's police force instead of investing in ourselves here at home.

I would be curious to see a timeline of the number of bases we have worldwide, starting with the WWI.

I hope her death wakes people up.
