Ending Domestic Terrorism
Author: BobR    Date: 08/15/2019 13:32:15

We may finally be turning a corner. After the recent spate of shootings, resistance to gun legislation seems to be waning, and the realization of the big problem with neo-nazi and neo-confederate groups (is there really that much of a difference?). As the smoke clears (sorry for that), what is emerging should give us hope, but also realize there is a hard row to hoe.

Democrats have always been pushing to classify white supremacy groups (and the violence they foment) as terrorism. Now, Republicans are joining the cause:
Sen. Martha McSally wants to make domestic terrorism a punishable crime in the wake of two mass shootings potentially tied to ideologically motivated violence in California and Texas.

McSally, R-Ariz., intends to introduce legislation when the Senate returns from the summer recess to create a law in the federal criminal code to address domestic terrorism.

Federal authorities use other laws, such as weapons offenses and hate crimes, to charge such acts.

McSally said in a written statement to The Arizona Republic that it is important to call domestic terrorism by its name — and to create laws to address it as such.

This may not go anywhere as long as McTurtle is in charge of the Senate, but when the Democrats retake control, there appear to be Republicans willing to work across the aisle. Hopefully, it will give the government the tools to properly deal with people like the Ohio man who had 10,000 rounds of ammo, and threatened numerous entities, including law enforcement:
The FBI first started investigating Justin Olsen, 18, in February when a user with the handle “ArmyOfChrist” posted threats in the chat room iFunny, according to an affidavit obtained by The Vindicator. The account was eventually traced back to Olsen’s computer, the affidavit states. After his arrest, Olsen admitted to posting under the screen name, the FBI said.

Officials say ArmyOfChrist posted about his support of mass shootings as well as attacks on Planned Parenthood. In June, ArmyOfChrist wrote “in conclusion, shoot every federal agent on [site],” during a discussion with another user about the 1993 siege on a Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, according to the affidavit.

It seems that even the domestic terrorist groups are fractioning, like the aforementioned anti-abortion terrorist, and anti-brown people terrorists. I think the law should include those who incite and fan the flames, like the FOX "News" host who has been ranting about "invading hordes" for years. Stochastic terrorism is still terrorism.

The resistance is crumbling too. The NRA leadership is in disarray and going broke. It may take until Jan 2021, but while we can't put the genie back in the bottle, we should be able to put the ship back on course to a better society.
