Shit On The Union Address
Author: BobR    Date: 02/05/2020 14:17:50

No, I didn't watch it.

I couldn't - we would have ended up with a broken TV. After seeing some clips - I'm glad I didn't. It apparently started badly when tRump handed Speaker Pelosi a copy of the speech. She extended her hand and he turned around without shaking it. It was a dick move - very disrespectful (are we surprised?).

Watch the White Houe claim he didn't see her do it.

The rest of the speech (apparently) was full of the lies, exaggerations, bullying, and puffery you would expect at one of his campaign rallies. You can get some fact-checking here. He even had the audacity to give Rush Limbaugh the Medal of Freedom. To say he ruins everything he touches is understatement.

At the end of it all, badass Speaker Pelosi tore up his speech!!

The Democratic rebuttal was delivered by Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer. That was a good choice, considering that the eventual Dem presidential nominee will need to win that state. It was what you might expect:

[the rebuttal] focused instead on Democratic efforts to rebuild the nation’s infrastructure, reduce gun violence and improve access to health care...

[...]

[she] blamed Trump for the growing income gap, with the wealthy earning more while low-income earners still struggle. Escobar said that Trump’s economic policies have “created two Americas: one where the wealthiest 1 percent benefit and one that leaves too many farmers, businesses and working families behind.”

Whitmer said that “it doesn’t matter what the president says about the stock market. What matters is that millions of people struggle to get by or don’t have enough money at the end of the month after paying for transportation, student loans, or prescription drugs.”

“Wages have stagnated, while CEO pay has skyrocketed,” she said.

The rebuttal was also delivered in Spanish by freshman House Rep Veronica Escobar (D-TX).

We now have 9 months to ensure this was the last time that tRump tainted the House chamber with his presence. Be disgusted, be angry, but be ready to Vote Blue, No Matter Who (seriously - no matter who) come November. I never want to have to write about a tRump SOTU address again.
