A Legacy of Callous Disregard
Author: BobR    Date: 02/17/2021 14:01:22

I will try to make a vow to myself. After this blog, I will look forward and comment on the Biden administration (and the Congress he has to work with), and stop looking back at the previous "administration"'s heinous record. History will look poorly on the 45th "president", as well as those who supported him, coddled him, and took their inspiration from him.

This past weekend was the end of a sham of an impeachment. The acquittal was all but a given, despite the comprehensive damning evidence presented by the House, and the comically inept defense provided by the only attorneys willing to do so. It was the final bookend which began on the White House lawn and ended with several people dead, maimed, injured, and terrorized.

This past Monday was Presidents' Day, which is a barely celebrated hybrid holiday that combines Washington and Lincoln's birthday to prevent workers from getting too many paid holidays. It seems a fitting start to a new era with Biden now firmly in charge, and the ex-president becoming Citizen Individual #1, losing the protections his previous office afforded him.

His legal problems are now ramping up like Covid infections at a water park. Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MI) has filed a federal lawsuit, claiming that #45 violated a Klan-era statute barring violent interference in Congressional activities. Joining him in this lawsuit are the NAACP and law firm Sellers & Toll. Reps. Hank Johnson and Bonnie Watson Coleman are expected to join the lawsuit as well.

Those are just the beginning of his legal troubles. His legal troubles include:
  • Atlanta prosecuters opening a criminal investigation into election interference, based on his call to the GA SoS.
  • Local DC officials are mulling over charging him for violating local ordinances for inciting the riot
  • He could be sued by victims of the riot (or face civil defamation charges for comments made about the victims)
  • Tax violations in NY and other jurisdictions
  • Potential Russia probe charges that were never brought against him (including obstruction of justice for firing James Comey)
  • A defamation lawsuit from his time on "The Apprentice"
  • Potential bribery charges (or influence peddling) for trying to trade his name for a stake in Parler.

Making matters worse (for him, anyway), his poor record on paying his bills will make it hard for him to find lawyers willing to work for him. He's already essentially fired Rudy, and not paid him for work he already did. It's hard to feel sorry for Ghouliani, so - I won't.

Since he no longer holds any legal sway (and his ability to mobilize his followers his only influence), the lines are being drawn. Moscow Mitch McConnell (R-Hell) continues to talk out of both sides of his mouth (like a modern-day Cerberus) suggesting first that #45 should be impeached, then asking for the trial to be delayed, then claiming he couldn't convict because #45 was no longer in office. THEN - he castigated #45 once the acquittal was in. This blatantly hypocritical attempt to salvage his own legacy resulted in comments that one might expect when daring to cross the former wannabe-dictator:
"Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again," Trump said in the statement. "He will never do what needs to be done, or what is right for our Country. Where necessary and appropriate, I will back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great Again and our policy of America First. We want brilliant, strong, thoughtful, and compassionate leadership."

Trump's call for compassionate leadership came in a petty statement full of ad hominem attacks, including a jab at McConnell's family, and after years of some of the most vitriolic political leadership in American history.

This put Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) in a bit of tough spot. He has publicly sucked up to the former "president" in brazen and disgusting ways, but has to work with McConnell. So - he too displayed his hypocrisy by trying to dance on a very fine line:
... I remind everybody, Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment was don't speak ill of fellow Republicans,” Graham said. He later added, “Mitch McConnell working with Donald Trump did a hell of a job. They are now at each other's throat. I’m more worried about 2022 than I’ve ever been. I don’t want to eat our own.”

[...]

“Mitch McConnell was indispensable to Donald Trump’s success,” Graham said. “Mitch McConnell got the tax cut through, a massive tax cut, with a two vote Republican majority. Mitch McConnell is much to credit for Amy Coney Barrett as any single person.”

It seems #45's legacy will be a Republican party at odds with itself as it tries to find it's moral center, and local and state politicians across the country who try to keep feeding the beast, like the Mayor of a TX town who told residents looking for help after losing power in the winter storm that only the strong will survive, and quit looking for handouts (yes, he resigned after the expected uproar). There's also Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) who has very nearly called the Capitol riot a hoax.

One can only hope that #45 goes down in flames, and ends up disgraced and destroyed (legally and financially), and those who promote his disturbed vision of vengeance, disregard, cruelty, and denial of reality go down with his ship. Our country deserves better.
