Good morning.

How's your neck of the woods this fine morn? Vaccination rates are pretty high here in the Greater Boston area. We fully re-opened, and while the tourism industry isn't exactly booming, we're running at around 75% of our 2019 numbers. Things are looking good for another month anyway. After Labor Day is anyone's guess.

Like the rest of the United States, there's a worrying trend about the Delta Variant, and we've already seen some alarming increases on Cape Cod, and especially Provincetown.

More than 250 coronavirus cases have been confirmed as connected to a COVID outbreak in Provincetown, the popular tourist town on the tip of Cape Cod. Many of the cases are from elsewhere in Massachusetts or out of state, authorities said Wednesday.

Also Wednesday, Nantucket joined Provincetown in advising people on the island to start wearing masks indoors and when social distancing in public isn't possible.

"The increased virulence of the Delta variant, and its high ability to infect even those vaccinated in some cases, means that masking and distancing are strongly recommended at this time," the popular tourist destination said in a release.

Provincetown earlier this week issued its own mask advisory in light of its cases, many of which were previously detected in people who are fully vaccinated. Wednesday's update from Town Manager Alex Morse noted that health officials are still investigating the vaccination status of people in the cluster.

The demographic that is most affected by these latest numbers is quite clear, though. The Boston Globe has reported on this as well, and they are placing blame for the new numbers squarely on "Un-vaccinated out of state visitors".

It is ironic that this continues to happen in Massachusetts. I don't have to tell you we invented the whole thing, right? (I mean vaccinations - look up Zabdiel Boylston). It has even already been decided by the Supreme Court, based on the early actions of this Commonwealth.

It is obvious that there are truly two Americas now. One that wants to live, and the other that is loyal to a fascist dictatorship.

In the United States, this pandemic could’ve been over by now, and certainly would’ve been by Labor Day. If the pace of vaccination through the summer had been anything like the pace in April and May, the country would be nearing herd immunity. With most adults immunized, new and more infectious coronavirus variants would have nowhere to spread. Life could return nearly to normal.

Experts list many reasons for the vaccine slump, but one big reason stands out: vaccine resistance among conservative, evangelical, and rural Americans. Pro-Trump America has decided that vaccine refusal is a statement of identity and a test of loyalty.

In April, people in counties that Joe Biden won in 2020 were two points more likely to be fully vaccinated than people in counties that Donald Trump won: 22.8 percent were fully vaccinated in Biden counties; 20.6 percent were fully vaccinated in Trump counties. By early July, the vaccination gap had widened to almost 12 points: 46.7 percent were fully vaccinated in Biden counties, 35 percent in Trump counties. When pollsters ask about vaccine intentions, they record a 30-point gap: 88 percent of Democrats, but only 54 percent of Republicans, want to be vaccinated as soon as possible. All told, Trump support predicts a state’s vaccine refusal better than average income or education level.

To overcome this resistance, some state and local political leaders have offered incentives: free beer, free food, tickets for a $1 million lottery. This strategy is not working, or not working well enough. Part of the trouble is that pro-Trump state legislatures are enacting ever more ambitious protections for people who refuse vaccines. They are forbidding business owners to ask for proof of vaccination from their customers. They are requiring cruise lines, sports stadiums, and bars to serve the unvaccinated. In Montana, they have even forbidden hospitals to require health-care workers to get vaccinated.

Yes, this is personal. I can't confirm or deny that Brother Trisec and his wife are vaccinated; I do know he is a Fascist Brownshirt these days, though.

I haven't spoken to him or seen him in over a year and counting.
