Insanity (deja vu edition)
Author: BobR    Date: 11/03/2021 12:44:10

One definition of insanity it's been said, is to keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Here we are not even a full year away from the most disastrous 4 years of presidential ineptitude and malfeasance in our lifetime, and voters say "more of that, please". There are still votes being counted, but this is all pretty ugly for Democrats.

Virginia, of course, is the most visible. They elect their commonwealth-wide and local representation in odd-numbered years. This one has been a doozy, with Trumpkin Youngkin plastering the airwaves with ads accusing McAuliffe of wanting to force Critical Race Theory on kids. The ads didn't actually say "CRT", but it was certainly implied - the dog whistle was deafening. Most of the McAullife ads were comparing Youngkin to TFG, which probably actually helped Youngkin with a broad swath of Republican voters.

As the governship goes, so goeth the vice-guv and AG seats. It appears that Republicans may have won at least one of the state House seats too, enough to push control into Republican hands.

This is a state that Biden won by 10 points a year ago. Yes, President Biden isn't super-inspiring, and it's frustrating that he can't get much done with the U.S. Congress as it is. VA was lost by the Democrats because of lackadaisical messaging, uneducated white women, and uninspired voters not turning out. The good citizens of VA will have the next two years of regression to deal with, and hopefully it's enough to make them realize how important their vote is, and motivate them next year for the "off year" U.S. House and Senate elections.

Beyond VA, New Jersey (of all places) is teetering on replacing democratic governor Murphy with republican Jack Ciattarelli. It's VERY close.

It's frustrating and aggravating and depressing that voters are so lazy and demand to be inspired before they'll peel themselves off of their couches and trudge down to the polls. The four previous years should have provided a lifetime of 220V-to-the-gonads of inspiration to realize how important it is to vote in EVERY election - ESPECIALLY their state and local races.

We have city/county elections on Sunday. I can guarantee I will be there.
