One Year Later

It's been one year since President Joe Biden took office. In that time, he has seen the death rate from Coronavirus plummet, only to have 2 variants surge (although the death rate was lessened by the wide availability of the vaccine). We have seen the unemployment rate drop to new lows, with some segments of industry begging for workers and offering heretofore unseen wages and benefits.

We've also seen prices rise, due to shortages in availability of products, due to supply chain issues, due to lack of workers. Capitalism is a double-edged sword.

It's also now an election year for the U.S. House of Representatives and 1/3 of the U.S. Senate (along with countless state races). Voter turnout will be crucial for the Democrats to maintain control of both houses of Congress, which is why Republicans are trying so hard to keep people from voting, and why the Voting Rights Bill is so important. Even if both houses flip control, there won't be veto-proof majorities - it just means there will be a lot of posturing with horrific bills that won't become law. Progress will grind to a halt.

The presidential race is still 2 years away (although it will start to kick into gear in the latter half of next year), and of course The Former Guy - still obsessing over his previous loss - shows no signs of letting up the fight, or stopping his campaign for 2024. This is where things get interesting.

He will still need to get through the primary process, and right now it looks like his main opponent will be Ron DeSantis, the asshole governor of FL. DeSantis has not stated whether or not he'll run, something that is pissing off TFG:
Former President Donald Trump has been questioning why Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who's garnered a national profile among Republicans, hasn't said he won't run against him in 2024, according to a New York Times report.

"I wonder why the guy won't say he won't run against me," Trump has said to several associates and advisors, who spoke to the Times on the condition of anonymity. Trump privately said "the magic words" would be for DeSantis to say he won't challenge the former president in 2024, the report said.

Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.

Recent reports have suggested there's a growing rift between Trump and DeSantis, who have generally been extremely close allies. The Florida governor's political ambitions have seemingly touched a nerve with the former president.

Uh-oh, trouble in paradise. It's not just DeSantis who may be a roadblock - it's also his former staffers:
About three dozen former US officials who served under President Donald Trump jumped on a conference call this week to figure out how to thwart Trump's efforts in the 2022 and 2024 elections, according to CNN.

Jake Tapper reported on the call, which was said to have taken place last Monday and involved high-profile Trump officials including John Kelly, Trump's former chief of staff. Also on the call, per CNN, were the former White House staffers Alyssa Farah Griffin and Anthony Scaramucci, the former Department of Homeland Security official Elizabeth Neumann, and Chris Krebs, the former director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

The real question is whether TFG will be able to run at all, or whether he'll be broke, fighting court battles, or in jail. The NY AG is on the case:
New York Attorney General Letitia James disclosed new details Tuesday night about her civil investigation into former President Donald Trump’s business, saying “Thus far in our investigation, we have uncovered significant evidence that suggests Donald J. Trump and the Trump Organization falsely and fraudulently valued multiple assets and misrepresented those values to financial institutions for economic benefit,” James said in a statement Tuesday. “The Trumps must comply with our lawful subpoenas for documents and testimony because no one in this country can pick and choose if and how the law applies to them.”

[...]

The state attorney general is assisting a separate Manhattan district attorney criminal investigation into allegations of tax fraud schemes at Trump’s company.

TFG is also facing charges in GA regarding his attempt to strong-arm the state into fabricating votes. Here's hoping the RNC disallows him to run as a Republican, although I'm not holding my breath. There is a chunk of the electorate that would vote for him even if he was in prison. It would be nice to see him lose a 2nd time, though.

Oh the shartenfreude...
