Shiny City Hill Mourning TV
Author: Raine    Date: 08/24/2020 13:00:37

Let go back in time. Back to the year 1984. Ronald Reagan was running for his second term as President. This campaign ad was airing on TV:

I was never a big fan of Reagan, but this ad is good. 4 years earlier, Reagan gave a speech on the eve of his election titled "A Vision for America" In that address he stated "I know I have told before of the moment in 1630 when the tiny ship Arabella bearing settlers to the New World lay off the Massachusetts coast. To the little bank of settlers gathered on the deck John Winthrop said: we shall be a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us, so that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken and so cause him to withdraw his present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword through the world.

Well, America became more than a story, or a bywordmore than a sterile footnote in history. I have quoted John Winthrops words more than once on the campaign trail this year for I believe that Americans in 1980 are every bit as committed to that vision of a shining city on a hill, as were those long ago settlers'."
(earily similar, btw, to a speech JFK gave, but that's a story for another day)

A LOT has happened since then. I'll leave that subject to historians and pontificators. Let's fast forward to today. I present to you the modern GOP.

It's worth noting this statement from the GOP:
WHEREAS, The RNC has unanimously voted to forego the Convention Committee on Platform, in appreciation of the fact that it did not want a small contingent of delegates formulating a new
platform without the breadth of perspectives within the ever-growing Republican movement;
because in case anyone missed it, the pandemic didn't prevent the Dems from putting out a platform, you can peruse it here.

In 40 years, the party that gave us Reagan and Morning In America has declared that the party has literally regressed and only stands for, well... absolute fealty to the occupant of the White House. Hillary Clinton warned us.
"He wants to divide us — from the rest of the world and from each other. He's betting that the perils of today's world will blind us to its unlimited promise. He's taken the Republican Party a long way, from 'Morning in America' to 'Midnight in America.' He wants us to fear the future and fear each other."

She was right - just look how bad it is.
