Beyond our Borders
Author: BobR    Date: 05/28/2010 12:13:25

The big stories for today are the "top kill" attempt on the Gulf oil geyser, and the House voting to repeal DADT. Considering those stories are consuming all of the news cycles out there, I can't think of anything I could add that hasn't already been said. So instead, I'll take a step outside our borders and look at a few stories that are getting pushed aside.

The biggest story (and most concerning) is the escalation of tensions between North and South Korea. N. Korea has nullified all agreements with S. Korea that are designed to prevent an escalation of war along the DMZ between the countries. Obviously, some sort of retaliation is in order, but the question is what can S. Korea do?
The heightened security at the DMZ is prompted by North Korea's statements today. North Korea has declared "null and void" all agreements reached between North and South Korea to insure against escalation of hostilities here along the 150-mile long DMZ and in the disputed waters of the West or Yellow Sea.

The language of the North Korean announcement seems unequivocal.

The command of the Korean People’s Army, says this is a response to “the reckless moves” of South Korean “maniacs, sycophants, and quislings.” South Korea’s defense ministry last week released a report charging that a North Korean submarine had fired the torpedo that sank a South Korean navy ship, killing 46 sailors. And South Korea is now pushing for more economic sanctions against the North.

Wow - and this coming from the maniac in charge of N. Korea. I suspect this will not end well.

In other violent news, Jamaica is trying to take back Kingston from a drug lord. The battle in the nation's capital has resulted in at least 30 deaths. The confrontation sounds like all-out war:
Hundreds of security forces punched into some of Kingston's roughest neighborhoods Tuesday as the manhunt for alleged drug lord Christopher "Dudus" Coke dragged on amid a spiraling body count and fears that the crisis could have a broader economic impact.

Officials said at least 30 people, including 26 civilians, have been killed since masked gunmen, thought to be Coke loyalists, launched coordinated attacks against police stations. Heavily armed security forces fought back, raiding a fortified section of Tivoli Gardens where the 41-year-old Coke is thought to be in hiding.

Perhaps they learned the lessons of Mexico and decided to shut this down before they got too strongly entrenched... or perhaps they were simply responding to a U.S. extradition request.

Nearby in the Gulf, Haiti is still struggling to recover from that massive earthquake a few months back. The coordination of funding and repairs seems to be lacking, though, as companies forge ahead with rebuilding efforts with the hope of getting paid for it in the future:
More than four months after Haiti's lethal earthquake, the international commission overseeing the recovery is still mulling how to spend the $9.9 billion pledged to the nation. But U.S. contractors are diving in, making high-stakes bets that reconstruction deals will eventually bring a windfall.

Companies have spent millions moving personnel and machinery to the shattered island since the Jan. 12 earthquake. Others have started on projects despite having no formal agreements to be compensated for the work. And all are lining up political allies as they elbow for a spot at the front of the line.

This seems like a good thing for the people of Haiti, but as the article notes, the problem is that these companies have the wherewithal to do this now, while smaller local companies that should get the contracts are having to sit on the sidelines, waiting for the money first.

Finally, England has scrapped a national ID card program that sounds suspiciously like something that would be promoted by nationalists here in the U.S. You would think the Christians would look at this as one of those "end times" things, but then - they don't have that same fervor elsewhere like they do here. What I don't understand is the need for a national ID card when a passport serves the same purpose. It seems unnecessary.

Anyway - that's it for today. Have a great Memorial Day weekend, and spend a few moments remembering why we have this holiday in the first place.

Altho I have to say -- her Apt sounded HUGE. She mentioned having an upstairs on more than one occasion. For a 2 floor apt on the upper west side, you can be pretty sure that it was a LOT of money. Crazy money.

b) so the "top kill" didn't work, then?

Howdy hi all, I am off to the lye-berry in a bit to check out Phil Okrent's new book on Prohibition. I heard about on the Fresh Air! mosheen a couple weeks back. Fun Prohibition fact: Walgreens went from five store at the start of Prohibition to over five hundred by the end of the era. This was due to the sale "medicinal" booze. You could go to your doctor and for five bucks get a scrip for a pint o' rye.

Good morning everyone. Well, at least Momma won't have to rent out the California home any more. An apartment that big in NYC does cost too much. So much for the bi-coastal experiment.

Last night, I got to experience the first-hand of the pain of doing baseball on TV. I was doing last night's Orioles game which was actually moving quick while there was a thunderstorm threat in Baltimore suddenly during the bottom of the 7th the game slowed to a crawl and we had 3 pitching change breaks rolled in a half inning and the O's blew a 5-2 lead to lose 7-5 and a game that could have gotten off early but ended up going a few minutes past the scheduled off time. At least we didn't have a rain delay although we came close or extra innings.

Has Glenn Beck Finally gone too far?

Glenn Beck, who repeatedly and angrily tells his alleged persecutors to "leave the families alone," spent a good chunk of his radio program this morning mocking and attacking the intelligence of President Obama's 11-year-old daughter, Malia.

Obama remarked yesterday during his press conference that Malia asked him of the Gulf oil spill: "Did you Plug The Hole Yet, Daddy?" Beck, taking off on this, mockingly affected Malia's voice, asking "Daddy" why he "hates black people so much." Then Beck attacked Malia's intelligence, saying: "That's the level of their education, that they're coming to - they're coming to daddy and saying 'Daddy, did you plug the hole yet?' "

This routine continued for several minutes, as Beck and his co-hosts touched on a variety of topics and laughed the entire time, all of it at the expense of an 11-year-old girl.

Seems like they're doing both at the same time, and that it's an ongoing procedure. The general belief is that by late tomorrow or Sunday they should be able to start cementing the well OR preparing the pipe for a new blow-out preventer and pipeline attachment. As always, it's both about stopping the leak and still being able to harness this apparent black goldmine.

Also, not sure if anyone saw it yet but this morning there was a bit of an "outburst".

Watching CNN's live feed of BP's cameras.. the camera where it shows the actual leak does indeed look like at least one of the 3-4 plumes/cracks in the pipe have stopped flowing.

A double from the history files today....both relevant to the DADT debate.

Remember when blacks couldn't serve?

The 54th Massachusetts Infantry, the most famous African-American regiment of the war, leaves Boston for combat in the South. For the first two years of the war, President Abraham Lincoln resisted the use of black troops despite the pleas of men such as Frederick Douglass, who argued that no one had more to fight for than African Americans. Lincoln finally endorsed, albeit timidly, the introduction of blacks for service in the military in the Emancipation Proclamation. On May 22, 1863, the War Department established the Bureau of Colored Troops to recruit and assemble black regiments. Many blacks, often freed or escaped slaves, joined the military and found themselves usually under white leadership. Ninety percent of all officers in the United States Colored Troops (USCT) were white.

Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the idealistic scion of an abolitionist family, headed the 54th. Shaw was a veteran of the 2nd Massachusetts infantry and saw action in the 1862 Shenandoah Valley and Antietam campaigns. After being selected by Massachusetts Governor John Andrew to organize and lead the 54th, Shaw carefully selected the most physically fit soldiers and white officers with established antislavery views. The regiment included two of Frederick Douglass's sons and the grandson of Sojourner Truth.

On May 28, 1863, the new regiment marched onto a steamer and set sail for Port Royal, South Carolina. The unit saw action right away, taking part in a raid into Georgia and withstanding a Confederate attack near Charleston. On July 18, 1863, Shaw led a bold but doomed attack against Fort Wagner in which Shaw was killed and the 54th suffered heavy casualties.

And also...a local Tuskeegee Airman has died.

BTW it's been said a lot and not gotten too much mainstream press coverage, but from a purely scientific & engineering viewpoint this is one hell of a field test on how stuff reacts under this much water pressure.. not to mention how much pressure there is on the actual chamber where the oil & gas are situated and where our math & physics went wrong in calculating it. This event could provide a really huge pool of data for a new round of scientific discovery here on this planet.

And on a side note.....wouldn't that Dragon Naturally Speaking® software have the effect of turning your computer into a "speakwrite"?
