We (on the Left) tend to paint Republicans with a big brush. It's easy to do when they seem to vote as a rigid unified bloc, and when they all sign pledges and statements that often run counter to their pledge to uphold the Constitution. But like the Dems, members of that party run the gamut of outlooks.

Texas Governor (and presidential hopeful) Rick Perry fits the stereotype. He tries to come off as an affable Reagan clone, but has all the charm and apparent intellect of George W. Bush's mean redneck cousin. After his comment about treating Fed Chairman Ben Bernenke "ugly", he encountered some ugliness himself, as protesters at a NH event let him know what they thought of him.

During that press junket, he told a boy that evolution is a " theory that’s out there. It’s got some gaps in it..." He's also said that global warming is a hoax. It's pretty clear that it was Perry that Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) was thinking of when he said that Republicans "are allergic to science".

They also seem to be allergic to common sense. Sen. Top Coburn (R-OK) recently said "It's just a good thing I can't pack a gun on the Senate floor". He later tried to play that comment off as a joke. Yeah, ha-ha... hilarious.

But there are a few glowing embers there in the darkness (not exactly flaming liberalism - they ARE Republicans after all). Presidential hopeful John Huntsman has distanced himself from his science-challenged party members by declaring "I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming. Call me crazy". He's crazy to think the Tea Party conservatives in his party will vote for him in the primary with THAT attitude.

Another cheer for a Republican meeting minimum expectations goes out to Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) who was selected to be on the joint committee (super Congress) for the debt plan. He has vowed that there will be no cuts to Medicare and Social Security. I'm sure Paul Ryan (R-WI) will not be happy about that. No telling whether he will be in favor of tax increases though.

One Republican that IS in favor of tax increases is Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE). He said at a town hall meeting that he agreed with Warren Buffet's call to close tax loopholes that benefit the rich. It would be nice to have HIM on that Super Congress committee.

So of course these aren't bright shining examples of Republican progressiveism. There's no Nixon there, creating the EPA. But considering how far the Republicans have slid to the right with the Tea Party extremists pulling as hard as they can, it's nice to see (and acknowldege) those that are willing to buck their party's hard line and think for themselves.

Maybe this is some of that hope and change we were all looking for...

Also among those glowing members is Fred Karger (he was a guest on yesterday's show)

He appears to be quite liberal socially. Openly gay too.

Except for his positions on Teacher's unions, not too shabby for a Republican... of course his from Cali-for-ni-a...

Good morning, bloggers!!

I hope that everyone is doing well today. (I have some stuff to do away from the computer soon.)

BobR, I would argue that it is a sign of how far from the facts the GOP is that John Huntsman has to worry about being called crazy. I wish those trying to pull back from the extremes success, but I don't think that it will change anything this election cycle.

IT was a long coat on a winters night -- the bar was across the street from our dorms.... I was bringing beer to the crew studying on the floor...

I just liked the coat rack.... I still have it!

About the Bus POTUS used -- and for all those that are expressing OUTRAGE!

One of the buses will be available for use by the Republican presidential candidate as well. And they wouldn't only be used on the campaign trail -- the Secret Service said the multipurpose vehicles be useful whenever a protectee travels into rural areas.

"The reality is that we're overdue for having this type of protective asset in our fleet," Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan told TPM. "We've had protectees in buses since at least 1980, Ronald Reagan, Gov. Reagan, was in a bus during the campaign. It's overdue because designing our own vehicle really gave us a level of security which we don't get when we lease a bus."

In the past, the Secret Service has enhanced the security features of buses leased by presidential campaigns, and they say having their own secure buses that can be used during campaign trips just makes more sense.

"If we have a candidate who has leased a bus and we're going to be protecting that candidate, we're going to look to enhance the security of that vehicle," Donovan said. "This is just the next step, and as I said, something that we're overdue for."

Non-sequitir:

With all this talk of job creation and revenue the Pres is planning for September, here's a curveball.

Do you think it's time to dust off the war tax? At a 10,000 foot level, he could trap the Republicans with it.

Who do you love more, the troops or your corporate overlords? While we all know the answer, it might help focus "the masses" more on who's side the GOP is really on.

Anyway, idle prattle from your loyal TriSec.

I've got Vaughn Monroe and Bitstream Dream battling for control of my iPod right now. I wouldn't bet against Vaughn.

Oh they would only worry Command level stuff. Midtown South is over a bunch of police precients. The precients would have been the ones worrying about your smuggling beer and coat racks. I was going to totally get my nerd on, but Wikipedia isn't working, so I had to wing it.
