The Battle for Tripoli
Author: Will in Chicago    Date: 08/22/2011 10:35:51

As the new blog for today is not up yet, I thought that I would put up a brief stub updating our bloggers on the changing conditions in Libya.

From Al Jazeera English:

Fighting rages near Gaddafi's compound
Gaddafi's location still unknown as rebel forces battle to control Tripoli.

Heavy fighting and gun battles have broken out in areas of Tripoli after rebels gained control overnight of much of the Libyan capital.

Clashes erupted on Monday after tanks left Bab Azaziya, Gaddafi's compound in Tripoli, to confront the rebel assault.

Many of the streets in the centre of the city were abandoned as pockets of pro-Gaddafi resistance and the presence of snipers and artillery fire have made the area dangerous.

There has been no word on the location of Gaddafi himself. Gaddafi has delivered a series of angry and defiant audio messages in recent days, vowing not to surrender.

You can watch live coverage at the Al Jazeera English live stream.

BBC News is providing live coverage online of the Battle for Tripoli.

Two of Gaddafi's sons, Saif-al-Islam and Mohammed, are either under house arrest or captured. There are no confirmed reports about the location of Moammar Gaddafi.

Green Square in central Tripoli has been renamed to Martyr's Square, it's original name.

We will have to see what develops, but I think that Gaddafi's 42 year rule is almost at an end. I hope that the people of Libya will have a bright future ahead of them.

Thanks for putting this up - I had heard that the Libyan army was standing down, so the news of tanks, etc. is a little disconcerting

It is all very confusing. One thing is for sure, the "risk factor" in the price of oil is dropping. I heard that on the "Marketplace Morning Report."

Morning, folks. I had both Al-Jazeera and BBC up for a while last night...fascinating stuff.

I'm rather intrigued by Khadafi's "compound" now. Wasn't he famous for never sleeping in the same place twice? We could never nail him down, but the rebels seem to have done it with ease. Maybe he didn't move around as much as we thought.

In any case...I've got World Service ready to roll, we'll see what happens this am.

For context, Tripoli is GMT+2...it's 3:00 pm local.

It is a quick flight from Chicago.

Here is an update from Al Jazeera:

Pockets of resistance as rebels claim Tripoli
Libyan leader's whereabouts still unknown as clashes break out in capital and rebel leader announces end of Gaddafi era.

The head of Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) has announced the end of the Gaddafi era, while sporadic fighting continued across the capital, Tripoli.

Fighting and gun battles erupted in parts of Tripoli on Monday after tanks left Bab al-Azizyah, Muammar Gaddafi's compound, to confront the rebel assault that gained control of much of the capital in a battle overnight.

Many of the streets in the centre of the city - where anti-government supporters had celebrated hours earlier - were abandoned as pockets of pro-Gaddafi resistance and the presence of snipers and artillery fire made the area dangerous.

Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr, who advanced into the city with rebel fighters overnight, said the security situation in the city was "tenuous," despite there being celebrations in the streets.

Gaddafi's forces control perhaps 20 percent of Tripoli. Still no news on Gaddafi's location.
