Good Morning.

Today is our 1,812th day in Iraq.

We'll start this morning as we always do, with the latest casualty figures courtesy of Antiwar.com:

Since Capture of Saddam (12/13/03): 3512
Since Handover (6/29/04): 3115
Since Election (1/31/05): 2535

Today's Cost of War nearing a significant milestone as it passes through $ 499, 615, 000, 000.00

We arise this morning to new sanctions on Iran. UNITED NATIONS (AFP) — The Security Council tightened UN sanctions on Iran Monday for refusing to halt nuclear fuel work as six major powers offered to resume talks with the Islamic Republic to end the standoff.

Fourteen of the council's 15 members voted in favor of Resolution 1803, sponsored by Britain, France and Germany, which slapped a third set of economic and trade sanctions on Iran in 15 months.

Indonesia abstained during the vote which was presided over by Russia, the council chair for March.

But Libya, South Africa and Vietnam, which joined Indonesia in expressing reservations about the need for fresh sanctions at a time when Iran is cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), voted in favor in the end.

After the vote, the six powers trying to scale back Iran's nuclear ambitions issued a statement calling for new talks between EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and Iran's nuclear negotiator.

"We have asked Javier Solana to meet with Dr. Saeed Jalili, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council," British ambassador John Sawers said on behalf of Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States.

The six reconfirmed and pledged to expand a 2006 offer of economic and trade incentives to Iran in exchange for a freeze of its uranium enrichment activities which the West fears is aimed at developing nuclear weapons.

US State Department spokesman Tom Casey said his government was "pleased to see the Security Council has recognized the continuing threat posed by Iran's nuclear program through this vote on additional sanctions."

Speaking ahead of the vote, Iran's UN Ambassador Mohammad Khazaee blasted what he called an "unjust and irrational decision" which he said "undermines the integrity and credibility" of the council.

Accusing the resolution's Western sponsors of pursuing "a politically motivated agenda," he said his country would not comply with demands it views as not "legitimate."

"Any irrational and unlawful act will not help resolve Iran's nuclear issue. It will complicate the dealings around this issue and it will become more difficult," said Iran's Atomic Energy Organization deputy head Mohammad Saeedi.

The Security Council vote came as IAEA chief Mohammed ElBaradei pressed Iran to clear up allegations that it was involved in covert nuclear weapons work.

"I urge Iran to be as active and as cooperative as possible in working with the agency to clarify this matter of serious concern," ElBaradei told the IAEA's 35-member board of governors in Vienna.

The resolution gives Iran three months to comply with UN and IAEA demands to suspend uranium enrichment and reprocessing to help restore international confidence in the peaceful nature of its nuclear program or face new sanctions.

It includes an outright ban on travel by officials involved in Tehran's nuclear and missile programs, and broadens a list of individuals and entities subject to an assets freeze.

It calls for inspections of shipments to and from Iran if there are suspicions of prohibited goods and urges states to "exercise vigilance" in entering into new commitments for public-provided financial support for trade with Iran, including the granting of export credits.

It also urges vigilance in dealing with "all banks domiciled in Iran, in particular Bank Melli and Bank Saderat and their branches and subsidiaries based abroad."

Sawers warned Iranian leaders not to "worsen still further their international isolation" and instead to "listen to what the international community is saying rather than misleading their people by misrepresenting our actions and the IAEA reports."
.

I'm sure they'll work wonders and bring Iran back in line with US expectations.

Our friends at IAVA have been quiet during the long winter, but late last week they did post a snippet....do you think veterans are having enough problems with finances, long separations from their families, stress, casualties, and everything else? Add the subprime mortgage crisis, too.
On Thursday, February 28, the House Committee on Veterans Affair’s Economic Opportunity Subcommittee held a hearing about the effect of the national subprime mortgage crisis on the veteran population. The committee Chairwoman, Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-SD) said:

“Sixty four years after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt recognized the need to invest in our nation’s troops after their service to our country, we find ourselves needing to again address the needs of today’s service members, veterans and their dependents.

Today’s hearing provided the opportunity to assess how the current housing market affects our veterans and to determine if the VA’s home loan programs have a role to play in the foreclosures affecting our communities.”

I've had some computer problems this morning....so I'm going to stop here and hope this makes it through. I'll see you inside!

TriSec, I thought fer sure you'd mention this march (maybe you did last week, I'm not really awake and my brain is gone):

Winter Soldier

From March 13-16th, U.S. veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan will testify to what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground in these occupations. To provide a preview, we've created this short film. The film features three members who will be testifying at Winter Soldier and includes videos and photographs of Iraq from their deployments. This video contains graphic content. We need your support to help make Winter Soldier a success.

Yeah, but you have to go all the way to the bottom to get the new posts. I wish there was a way to reverse that.

Also, the colors are *so* in your face that it's harder for me to get away with it at the job.

At least 4F's colors are a bit more generic.

I can, however, understand why they'd put up their own blog. They have no content control here for one. I'm sure there are other legal issues as well.

Melanie Morgan caned from KFSO.

Melanie Morgan — the conservative radio talk show host who chairs Move America Forward, the group which has led efforts to shame and boycott Berkeley for its anti-U.S. Marine Corps recruiting stand — has lost her job at KSFO 560 AM.

Morgan, 51, delivered her final broadcast there today after 14 years at the microphone, she says in a news release. KSFO owner Citadel Broadcasting decided not to renew her contract as part of the company’s announced across-the-board financial cost cutting.

“The ratings were terrific and I got to connect with a lot of passionate conservative casues, and I’m really grateful for that,” Morgan told me just now. “I don’t know what’s going to happen to the show, I don’t know what’s going to happen to KSFO.”

She’ll not be bored, though. She said her e-mail is already overflowing “with all kinds of very, very nice emails of support” and work offers. “I think I’m not going to have very much time to grieve this job.”

Among Morgan’s more incendiary moments:

# Of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, she said, “We’ve got a bull’s-eye painted on her big, wide laughing eyes.“

# Of New York Times editor Bill Keller, after the Times published a story on U.S. government tracking of terrorist funding, she said, “If he were to be tried and convicted of treason, yes, I would have no problem with him being sent to the gas chamber.“

# Of billionaire financier and political contributor George Soros, after her co-host said Soros had “cheerfully and willingly went to work for the Nazis,” she said he’d done so “in order to further his own career.“

In the move, I misplaced my favorite quiche recipe. It's an all-purpose one that can be used in combination with many different cheeses and veggies. I'm having company over tomorrow and had planned to make that quiche.

Do you happen to have a similar recipe for the "batter," so to speak? I know the veggie/cheese proportions, just not exactly I might need for the batter.

I have to go out shopping tonight and need to know what I'll need. I suppose I could wing it, but I'd rather not over or under do the various liquids.

I usually just use the recipe in my Betty Crocker cookbook (I know that sounds a little pedestrian, but the recipes are usually very good). You could just google it, and you'll find more recipes than you can imagine. I do that all the time, then sort of "average" the recipes I find, based on what I'm trying to do (and sometimes based on what ingredients I have available).

Lesse....I've got the traditional Massachusetts "Toll House Cookie" recipe (invented right here, ya know...)

* 2¼ cups all-purpose flour

* 1 teaspoon baking soda

* 1 teaspoon salt

* 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter

* ¾ cup granulated sugar

* ¾ cup firmly packed brown sugar

* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

* 2 large eggs

* 1 cup Nestle Toll House Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 375° F. Combine flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in a large mixer bowl till creamy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

And Quiche? Can't say I've got much experience in that area, but try this:

From chef and author Julia Child

1997

Quiche is an easy dish for luncheons, suppers, or appetizers. Its savory filling of cheese and onions, or spinach, or lobster or etc., is held together by a custard--liquid and eggs which slowly coagulate in the oven.

All-purpose custard. Whatever the filling, the custard mixture remains the same, and as you can't be exact about total amounts since pie shells vary in depth, you can at least calculate the custard by egg:

Whisk 1 "large" egg in a measuring cup. Blend in liquid (usually milk) to reach the 1/2 c. mark.

For example, whisk 3 eggs into 4-c. measure and stir in enough milk to reach the 1 1/2-c. mark. Whisk in a little salt to taste, freshly ground white pepper plus perhaps a speck of nutmeg, or drops of hot-pepper sauce. This is usually the amount you'll need for an 8- to 9-inch shell.

Pie shells for quiche:

Quiches are traditionally served in a prebaked, freestanding, straight-sided shell formed in a ring 1/2 to 3/4 inches deep. If you can't find one, use a regular pie tin with slanting sides or a store-bought frozen pie shell. Or, for appetizers, bake in a free-form rectangular shell that cuts nicely into bite sizes. In any case, prick the bottom of the dough at 1/4-inch intervals with a table fork and, to prevent sides from collapsing and bottom from rising, weigh down with buttered aluminum foil filled with dried beans (which can be kept and used indefinitely for this purpose). Bake at 450 degrees for about 10 minutes, until the dough has set; remove foil and beans and bake another 7 to 8 minutes more, to brown slightly.

I have a 3 THREE hour drive to work tomorrow. And I have to be there at 6:00 am.

The case is going to be about ten 10 Hours.

And the office called me to ask if I needed a hotel.

As if that is not stupid enough when I called them back to confirm the hotel then got pissed when I insisted on 2 days.

As if I was kind of crazy to want to get some sleep after working ten hours straight.

Note I do not get bathroom brakes, I do not get lunch brakes I have to sit there from start to finnish!

The Julia "recipe" you gave for the custard (see how little I know? I called it batter!) sounds pretty close to what I'm used to - although mine used either cream or half and half.

Depends - how long have you lived there and how strong is your social circle? Does Mrs. T work outside the house? Does she have firm roots in the community that she'll be giving up?

It's always hard to move. A friend of mine is moving only about a mile away from where she currently lives. It's just been her and the cat for about a year now - her parents are now both dead but she lived there for many years taking care of them both until they had to be placed in a nursing home. The neighborhood is going downhill fast and she got an extraordinary amount of cash money for the place. But it's where she's lived for many many years and the spirit and memory of her parents cling to the walls.

It's been a very hard decision for her despite knowing it's the right one for her now.

So it's totally understandable that you and Mrs. T are having misgivings and getting nervous about leaving the known behind for the unknown.

eh, maybe it's just me. My parents divorced when I was in eighth grade; I've always been a transient. The only roots I have are at my grandparent's houses...the one in Saugus that I refer to as my ancestral homeland (and the one my aunt wants to sell when she retires) and their place in Florida...

I'm like grapes; I'm more connected to the terroir of a place...which is why the ocean and the north woods are such a strong attraction to me. I grew up by the sea, and my favorite place on earth is the South Shore of Nova Scotia, which not coincidentally is at the same latitude as Belfast, ME.

Mrs. TriSec has a small job in the school system, and is involved in the scouting program here. I think it's more concern over young Javier and leaving the only life and home he knows behind...but he's young; he'll rebound.

Mrs. TriSec is also very close to her home and family...but again, my relationship with both parents is much cooler, as previously mentioned.

I'm going to have to go all managerial and run a cost/benefit analysis here, methinks. But it's a no-brainer in the end.

Is this ya'll first house? If so I can totally understand - it's a scary thing but totally worth it.

As for moving - it's hard to pull up roots and move to some place completely foreign. It's like you've been moving along toward a finish line (or something like that) all this time, taking your time making progress but you can see the checkered flag off in the distance. Then someone hits reset and you have to start all over again. It's scary and uncertain and change. Change's make people hopful and anxious all at the same time.

Talk it out with her, maybe there's something underlaying that she's not really saying.

:hug: to you and Mrs. T

Growing up in a small town is the best for kids. There are fields for playing baseball, creeks and woods to explore, he can ride his bike everywhere he wants to go, and with a port nearby, he could get first-hand knowledge of all things nautical. You will be part of a community.

Plus, there will be scouting there as well.

Your in-laws will be close enough to visit whenever she wants to, and far enough away that they can be avoided when necessary.

I know it's a big deal to move. Ever since I got laid off in 2005 between my financial situation and the cost of living, I have given thought to leaving New York, but I have lived here all my life that I do feel rooted here and it would be difficult for me to leave it all behind. That's probably why I wish that I was working in Manhattan where I could get something that pays better and get some chances to enjoy the city that I never really get to go to.

I know that the only barely affordable places are now way out in Suffolk County which would be removed from everything and I wouldn't be crazy about the fact that traveling anywhere involves either a long trek to the City or paying extra for one of the ferries to Connecticut.

True, but it's mostly the opening your self up for the chance of being possessed. I swear to God I've have and do know people who really believe that to be true.

Yep, I grew up with that culture. No hypnosis either. You never know what little demon is lurking behind you and what would the Winchester Brothers do if they found you already possessed?

Is this ya'll first house? If so I can totally understand - it's a scary thing but totally worth it.

We've never owned our own home (but we would in Maine)...we're in the same apartment that I moved into two months before we were married...our entire existence together has been here.

Yeah...I get that. Here's where our first home was, where we brought our first child home to, etc... But ever since the family that owned the place sold it, it's been going down faster than the Titanic. I really don't know what it is...if Athena had gone to Burlington, Vermont or Western Mass we wouldn't be having this discussion...and if any of my crazy schemes to find work in the San Francisco Bay Area or Pennsylvania Amish country had worked out, we'd have moved away long ago.

Afternoon all. Day off today and been working while lurking (a bit). Yes, it seems more and more likely that I will not be making DC. Unless something changes, money wise.

Without being able to make my NY meeting, I can't justify going to DC. :(

Comment by velveeta jones on 03/04/2008 21:19:28
btw Tri, I think I've told you before, I moved my "city wife" (Think ghetto version of Zsa Zsa) to -what she refers to as- the Country! Course, she also confuses horses and cows.........

Anyway, she was skeptical for quite awhile, but now just adores living in the mountains of the "racist" South! ;)

The bottom line, it is scary as all hell to make that major life change....

But, once you get thru tht fear, it is the very best thing in the world.

I can understadn Mrs. T's fears. I can... she needs to know that the change that s coming is not a bad thing. It isn't. all it is is change. And with every change we make, we have that much more life experience.

I lived in my house for a long time. I grew up in that house, I bought that house from my dad. I sold that house for a chance at something new.

I don't regret it for a minute.

Burlington, Vermont is cool as a small city. If it weren't for the snow in wintertime I wouldn't mind living there. Plus, it's just a little over an hour drive to Montreal.

Hello to das blog! :star:ling was in class learning HTML. Woot! Woot!

I was doing a little purusing during breaks. . . what is this Non-Story about Marion Cottilard? Everybody is up in arms because she says she *gasps* "believes in conspiracy theories" about 9/11, and the man walking on the moon.

Could this ruin her career? : drama sting :

Are you freakin kidding me?!?!

I cannot wait to see her again! We are going to have a certain person from Jacksonville visiting us on Thursday and we will be sharing a ride up from there... we were hoping to pick up a certain product, but I understand if that cannot happen. PLUS, we are (as far as I know) bringing another friend from the ATL. he doesn't blog with us, but it looks like he is coming as well. and he is a blast!

I highly recommend a visit, liv. you can take metro North to pokeepsie and then a cab. WELL worth it. Even more than FDR's place, you could visit Elanor's home... Right on the other side of town.

That could be a good day trip up to the Hudson Valley. With the cost of both LIRR and Metro-North, it would probably still be cheaper to drive up even with the tolls.

Isn't much worse than LI. Actually, probably better, they know how to remove the snow... Did you know that Burlington Vermont was the first and possibly only city in America to elect a socialist mayor? I LOVE burlington. it is a small city, with a city feel and yet, still a wonderful small town feeling. * sigh*
