Romney: Master of Delusion?
Author: Raine    Date: 06/11/2012 14:26:25

It is unclear who Romney thinks he’s running against, but it is clear that he is not running against President Obama. At least, he’s not running against “IRL” President Obama. Mitt Romney is running against a strawman, all the while erecting strawmen and promptly setting them on fire.
This is an excerpt from a post made by Angry Black lady at Raw Story. The entire post is worth a read, but this statement stuck with me.

Mitt Romney is campaigning against a fictional version of President Obama. It's not just spinning what is being said, it's literally running against someone who doesn't exist. Often when when debating (on the internet or in real life), it is easy to encounter what is known as a strawman argument. According to wiki, A straw man is a type of argument and is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position. To "attack a straw man" is to create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by replacing it with a superficially similar yet unequivalent proposition (the "straw man"), and refuting it, without ever having actually refuted the original position. A simple example:

Person A has position X.
Person B disregards certain key points of X and instead presents the superficially similar position Y.
Person B attacks position Y, concluding that X is false/incorrect/flawed.

Strawman debates are those that attack positions. They are commonly used to attack a position for/against things like religion, politics and social issues. Logical Fallacy explains:
In a Straw Man argument, the arguer argues to a conclusion that denies the "straw man" he has set up, but misses the target. There may be nothing wrong with the argument presented by the arguer when it is taken out of context, that is, it may be a perfectly good argument against the straw man. It is only because the burden of proof is on the arguer to argue against the opponent's position that a Straw Man fallacy is committed. So, the fallacy is not simply the argument, but the entire situation of the argument occurring in such a context.
We've all experienced this tactic.
As the "straw man" metaphor suggests, the counterfeit position attacked in a Straw Man argument is typically weaker than the opponent's actual position, just as a straw man is easier to defeat than a flesh-and-blood one. Of course, this is no accident, but is part of what makes the fallacy tempting to commit, especially to a desperate debater who is losing an argument. Thus, it is no surprise that arguers seldom misstate their opponent's position so as to make it stronger. Of course, if there is an obvious way to make a debating opponent's position stronger, then one is up against an incompetent debater. Debaters usually try to take the strongest position they can, so that any change is likely to be for the worse
This is why I find the comments from Angry Black lady so thought-provoking. Mitt Romney isn't just applying strawman arguments in this campaign, he as created a fictional PERSON to strawman against. It is a double fallacy that he is campaigning upon. He's created a fictitious person, set up a straw man to debate against in order to argue about what doesn't really exist. Why? President Obama presents a strong argument with facts that support his positions. As thus, the person who set's up a strawman debate is ultimately the weaker of the two in the discussion. Mitt Romney is that person in this case, it appears.

All politicians spin. That isn't a false equivalency situation; politicians spin issues to their benefit. What Mitt Romney is doing isn't close to that, he's creating a false reality and debating a strawman. Isn't that a little nuts? Does it matter when we have people out there that have literally said they don't care who the nominee is, just as long as they get rid of President Obama? Remember this?
All we have to do is replace Obama. ... We are not auditioning for fearless leader. We don't need a president to tell us in what direction to go. We know what direction to go. We want the Ryan budget. ... We just need a president to sign this stuff. We don't need someone to think it up or design it. The leadership now for the modern conservative movement for the next 20 years will be coming out of the House and the Senate.

Pick a Republican with enough working digits to handle a pen to become president of the United States. This is a change for Republicans: the House and Senate doing the work with the president signing bills. His job is to be captain of the team, to sign the legislation that has already been prepared.
As long as Mitt Romney is parroting RW talking points, it looks like it doesn't matter who he is. He's a guy that doesn't need to face reality. He's creating illusions and expect people to believe them as fact. Take a look:

I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a leader who approaches our nations issues from a position of reality.

and
Raine

Morning all

Sitting in NE Baptist Hospital cafeteria while Mrs. Rabbit is seeing her back specialist. Her knee is much better this morning. Then off to get her some more blood tests.

Been spending a lot of time out of work lately. Good thing I have understanding boss and co-workers.

And yes, today Boston is Mama (and Ed and Thom) free :(

Most likely a Dial-Global / Jeff Santos contract squabble.

Good morning, bloggers!! Before I say anything else, let me with the best for Mrs. Rabbit and Mondo's brother.

I think that Romney has to make Obama into a scary figure who is harmful to the American economy, if not the country. Romney was a poor governor (47th in job creation) and a venture capitalist whose company outsourced many American jobs. So, he has to direct attention elsewhere.

I looked over Sunday's blog just now, and saw the information on the Revolution Boston. So, let me repost to the current thread:

I hope to work in Metro Boston, but if this is the line up, I may do a lot of streaming. I am sorry but replacing an hour of Thom Hartmann and an hour of Norman Goldman with Jeff Santos' Rebuild America did not go over well. I hope that the Dial Global shows come back, otherwise I fear that the Revolution Boston may suffer a big drop in ratings.

Jeff Santos has not gone over well in Chicago. I think that he might do better making his morning show great, and perhaps letting someone else on in the afternoon. (By the way, can someone teach Mr. Santos to pronounce Chicago correctly It is not Shee-ca-go but more Shi (as in shin) for the initial syllable. If i can pronounce Worcester as Woo-ster, Jeff Santos can learn to pronounce Chicago correctly.)

I was thinking that myself.

That's why I found that youtube ad so good. Team Obama is prepping for it.

I was waiting to get more information about this story. It's really sorta sad -- and even worse,(putting on my jaded hat) I suspect that it will become Obama's fault somehow. Commerce Secretary in alleged hit and run.

The Commerce Department said John Bryson, 68, suffered a seizure in connection with Saturday’s accidents and has returned to Washington after being released from a hospital.

"Secretary Bryson was involved in a traffic accident in Los Angeles over the weekend. He suffered a seizure," said Commerce spokeswoman Jennifer Friedman.

Mr. Bryson could face felony hit-and-run charges, San Gabriel Police spokesman Lt. Ariel Duran said. “We did cite him for felony hit-and-run,” Lt. Duran said. “Later the case (will be) submitted to the DA’s office, which will make a determination on what they are going to charge him with.”

The first accident occurred about 5 p.m. on Saturday when a Lexus, driven by Mr. Bryson, rear-ended a Buick stopped at a railway crossing. Three men in the Buick apparently spoke to Mr. Bryson who later drove away, but only after hitting their car a second time. The three called police and followed Mr. Bryson to nearby Rosemead, where the Lexus was apparently involved in another minor accident.

My goodness, she really is her Mothers Daughter:
“I think if somebody is going to talk poorly about my mom, I am going to pick and choose my battles and a battle like that, I chose to confront him and see what the real problem was,” she said, “and I’m excited for viewers to see the real me in that, because I’m sitting there all tough and shaking and I’m acting tough and instantly when it’s over, it’s like, ‘OK, there’s the real Bristol,’ because I am calling my boyfriend, I’m calling my mom. ‘Ah, get me out of here,’ people are going to see the real Bristol in this show.”

Yeah, Bristol is getting her own show...

I think that Bryson is likely to resign soon, but if the right tries to make this Obama's fault, the president should tear into them personally --- by name.

I am a bit depressed. I got an e-mail from one potential employer that two jobs that I applied to in teaching out East have been filled. If I don't get any interviews this month, I will keep looking but work on a local back up plan. Maybe I could see if my Masters in Education could work as toilet paper.

Forgive me for sounding cynical, but I spent two months studying for an eight hour teaching test, spent more hours and years of my life on trying to become a teacher, and all I can get is substitute teaching. I am trying to have hope, but I am getting very disheartened. It is as if we no longer value educators in this country.

I think that we on the Left are often our own worst enemies, forgetting that there is a strength in allowing different opinions in a party. The GOP has become so rigid in their ideology that Eisenhower, Goldwater, Nixon and Reagan would not be acceptable candidates.

Do I like everyone in the Democratic Party? No. However, I do realize that there is a need to work with people on issues that I agree with and realize that not all my allies will agree with me on each and every issue. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of the need to work with people who will agree with you on some issues and may oppose you on others.

I have heard stories to the effect that WWZN does not participate in the Arbitron PPM ratings service (because there is a cost involved in purchasing and installing the encoder in addition to the Arbitron fees) so there may be no ratings to exist, they just get the "dollar-a-holler" type junk ads.

Good day, folks. Since I had to go to work early yesterday I guess I was pooped since I crashed today. Kitty was sleeping on the dresser until I woke up. Good thing I am off today so I can recuperate.

Will, I was reading a piece in the Guardian that was decrying the current anti-intellectual tendencies in this country and it does make me think of whether the right-wing's attacks on educated people and the education system as part of their schemes to privatize it are creating the current conditions that exist and why you're having difficulty in getting a teaching job. The right's attacks on intellectuals and anyone who thinks that doesn't share their party line views is helping to further poison discourse in this country.

So, there is no effective measure as to whether or not WWZN is effective in getting advertisers. When Jeff Farias, Kim Macias and Bily Foster were part of KPHX 1480 in Phoenix, they got advertisers and good ratings.

Later today, I will work on a script to use for some interview questions. I just hope that I get to use them.

If the uber left keeps doing this to everyone who may differ with them, they will find themselves alone and in their own echo chamber-- if that hasn't happened already.

If the Georgia Department of Transportation accepts the application, the KKK would be responsible for cleaning litter on a part of Georgia State Route 515 in the Appalachian Mountains near the North Carolina border. "

Afternoon all & Happy Mondee..

Well the weekend didn't exactly end how I expected. I woke up Saturday morning feeling sick, but was feeling a bit stubborn about attending the third day of NN, so I headed up there anyways....Only to get off the bus and turn around about 3/4 of the way to Providence and start convulsing while waiting for the return trip. Spent most of the rest of the day and about half of Sunday in bed.

I did manage to catch the lunch keynote with Paul Krugman on Free Speech TV after I got home.. it should be available on the NN12 website by now so check it out when you have a chance!
