A Time to Reflect
Author: Raine    Date: 11/29/2012 14:03:15

The Election has come and gone -- and apparently so has the time for reflection from the Republican party. You will recall Dick Morris saying this in the days after the election:
“The percentage of single women, minorities and voters under 30 is so large at this point that unless the Republican Party fundamentally changes its appeal to those voters, it can never win an election,” Morris said.”
On November 11, CNN held a panel to discuss the future of the Republican party.
"I don't think it's about the Republican Party needing to become more moderate; I really believe it's the Republican Party becoming more modern," the former Romney surrogate said. "And whether it's Hispanics, whether it's women, whether it's young people, the Republican Party has to make it a priority to take our values, take our vision to every corner of this country. To every demographic group, and I am confident that we can do it."

Bauer said Republicans should be "bold and confident" in their economic and socially conservative views, while McMorris Rodgers said she didn't believe any changes were needed in the party. Huntsman said a solution would be to "get our economic house in order" and tack libertarian on social issues, and Gutierrez said the party needed to "welcome immigrants."
So what happens next for the GOP?

They come back to Washington DC and select the new committee chairs -- and they are all white men. Except Darrell Issa -- he's back! -- he's "of Arab descent; his paternal grandparents were Lebanese immigrants."

They either don't know how to really diversify -- or they are really really a party of men. With or without binders of women, this is not a party that is showing its desire to be more diverse. It's a party that doesn't listen to people. Take a look for yourself: HOUSE COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN FOR THE 113TH CONGRESS
“Republicans are humbled by the confidence that the American people have placed in our House majority, and we’re united and focusing on their top priority, which is jobs. I’m proud of my leadership colleagues who have been elected today to serve as our leaders in the next Congress. And while we have some of us that are returning to the leadership, we have new members, and you’ll get to hear from them in a moment.

“Listen, our majority is the primary line of defense for the American people against a government that spends too much, borrows too much when left unchecked. I’ve outlined a framework for how both parties can work together to avert the fiscal cliff without raising tax rates. And through a combination of pro-growth tax reform and entitlement reform, we can bring jobs home and make our economy stronger.

“Listen, with so many challenges that are ahead of us the American people need to see us act courageously, think selflessly, and lead boldly, and our majority is up to the task - and I expect the president is as well.”

They haven't learned anything at all. Once again, it's a lot of talk, smoke and mirrors. Don't believe me? From Politico:
“President Barack Obama made a demand of House Speaker John Boehner near the end of their first White House meeting on the fiscal cliff: Raise the debt limit before year’s end.

Boehner responded: ‘There is a price for everything.’”
You read that right. That isn't from last year, that is this week. The very same issue that got the country into the super committee, the trigger and the fake fiscal cliff is once again rearing it's head. The SAME damn issue. Jay Bookman clarifies what the Debt ceiling is:
Raising the debt ceiling does not authorize so much as a penny more in spending. It merely allows the Treasury to borrow the money to pay the bills that previous Congresses and presidents have already incurred.
I don't know how many times people need to be told this small and simple bit of information. These are debts that already occurred.

They don't want to change their ways. They just want you to to think they are. It's the same thing over and over. White men without binders.

Raine

Morning, folks.

Reposting from last night - TriSec is a bit stunned.

A fourth member of the Troop 250 community has just been diagnosed with cancer. (His manifested itself in a brain tumor, which they removed surgically, but he starts very agressive chemotherapy on Friday. (The inpatient kind.) I don't know what his prognosis is at the moment.

Coupled with the 6 people I now know of at the store (3 of us in active treatment), I'm just wondering what the hell is going on around here.

As recently as June 25 of this year, the only folks I knew that had the "Big C" were my elder relatives. Since then, it's been a long string of contemporaries that have got it now.

Bob posted on facebook last night that perhaps we're all getting older. I don't like the direction that logic is taking.

In any case, it's a Mr. Paul Perry, troop treasurer. Any prayer circles would be welcome indeed.

Before everybody goes off the deep end in the Jordan Davis case, here is a quote from a local attorney:

"Mr. Dunn is going to have to answer the question, ‘Why did you not call the sheriff’s office? If you are reasonably protecting yourself, why did you leave the scene, get in the car, and the next day, flee the jurisdiction of Duval County?’ … There’s no indication that Jordan or anyone else in that car had a gun, there’s no indication that they were any threat to Mr. Dunn."

Mornin' all..

I hate to keep piling on to the wave of maladies that our friends and relatives are going through lately, buuuut...

..my mom's in the hospital. Over the holiday the incision from her hip replacement (which was done in MARCH) reopened and she kinda held her tongue about it for a few days out of pride and not wanting to worry everyone. She went to a walk-in clinic last Friday and they gave her a script for heavy antibiotics, but that apparently didn't prevent it from getting infected.

Hostess: Run by Dicks!

NEW YORK (AP) — Hostess Brands Inc. is asking for a judge’s approval to give its top executives bonuses totaling up to $1.8 million as part of its wind-down plans.

The maker of Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Ho Hos says the incentive pay is needed to retain the 19 corporate officers and ‘‘high-level managers’’ during the liquidation process, which could take about a year. Two of those executives would be eligible for additional rewards depending on how efficiently they carry out the liquidation. The bonuses would be in addition to their regular pay.

Listening to perhaps some of my favourite Ellington today...

We've got "A Concert of Sacred Music", circa 1965. "Come Sunday" up now, one of Duke's finest ballads.

I always associate this with Christmas - the now defunct "Eric in the Evening" on the now jazzless WGBH always used to play this during Christmas Week.

Great, now I'm going all hypochondriac and convincing myself I have diabetes.

I've got a couple of the symptoms of type II, but they're related to the chemo side effects, too.

Nay...it's been the water. I've been drinking gallons of it for the past few days. Unfortunately, it has little effect. Daytime "flow" isn't what it should be, so as a consequence I'm up every 2 hours all night.

I'm really messed up here, folks. Honestly, next treatment can't come soon enough. I'm actually concerned enough to email my doctor.

Had a nice little service at the funeral home and the weather was nice and clear. Ma appears to be holding up OK, my niece will be staying with her for a few days and there are 3 sons and 1 daughter to look after her.

Oh damnit! I forgot to ask Livin a TV guy question. I might be losing the local NBC affiliate due to some pissing match between NBC and direcTV. Why people want satellite and not cable is beyond me. So far I am not impressed with DirecTV. Poor picture quality, the network vs. them pissing contests about access fees, NO ON DEMAND, no service if it is storming. List is a partial list.

Well things are different now, but not too long ago ...

That was the only way to get NFL Sunday Ticket
Older analog cable systems could SUCK.

I had comcast for years with nary a complaint. Yes they were operating under a consent decree from the legacy company they bought out here., but never a problem with them as Comcast.

I never really thought that Florida is 7.4 times the size of Massachusetts. I think if we did a influence type map, Massachusetts would be vastly larger than Florida.

I did say things are different now but....

I DID have major reception problems with Comcast when I was in my first apartment, then the building was wired for DTV so we switched over, and that's about the time Sunday Ticket started. I will give them that Comcast's service was better when we moved to our condo (and that was digital) and when we moved to our present apartment.

Got sick of paying $100 per month for channels of mostly infomercials and reality garbage and went to strictly OTA. Amazing how quickly we got calls wanting us to "come back"

Oh that is another issue. The onscreen guide for DTV is awful! Really, really, really bad! El Stinko. The way the channels are grouped is lunkheaded; I have scroll through the dozens of PPV porn and movie channels to get to things like TNT or Discovery.

I'm now home to decompress for the rest of the week. I thought for a short time about working Friday, but I was unprepared for what I started feeling today, and I think if I walked in they'd all tell me to go home anyway.

Had a nice little service at the funeral home and the weather was nice and clear. Ma appears to be holding up OK, my niece will be staying with her for a few days and there are 3 sons and 1 daughter to look after her.

Got a nice big flower basket from work, wondering how long it will be before the cats go after it.

Oh Rabbit. I wish I could do more than give you this:

I hope that will do.

Rabbit, I kinda know what you are going through. I'm two months down the road from PapaModo's untimely demise and I still choked up about it. Since the ancestral manse is in NC, I try to talk to my mom everyday. I think she's dealing with this better than I am. I miss PoppaMondo every damn day.

Yes, I agree with you. We have DTV in our break room at work and the guide DOES stink.

Though if I did have DTV I would be also using a TiVo so I wouldn't have to worry about the guide as much.

It does.
Thank you.

Since I'm so bad with names I was continually asking others "who's that?". Not a good feeling.

That seems to be their big selling point vs cable have OnDemand; DTV offer the ability to record multiple programs with the DVR they have. While that looks really sweet, I would rather have the growing crap-load of onDemand content that cable offers.

FWIW the new TiVo DVRs have the capability of recording 4 shows on cable at once.

Why am I not surprised. Since the landlord controls the time of TV service, I am stuck with DTV for time being.

I just got the new TiVo Premiere DVR Today and I just have to get a cablecard so I can hook it up to the FiOS service. The sad truth is that programmer-provider disputes are becoming a way of life since channels seem to be making up their loss in advertiser revenues by trying to force cable and satellite companies to either pay (or in cases pay more) to carry their signals. Comcast seems to have avoided some of those disputes although I don't know if Comcast now owning NBC puts them into another situation where such disputes may get them more scrutiny than other providers but considering in the last 3 years having witnessed first hand DirecTV's disputes with Viacom and Tribune and Cablevision's disputes with Scripps-Howard (Food Network, HGTV), ABC, Fox, The Tennis Channel, and Tribune (Tennis Channel has not even come back to Cablevision) seem to indicate that this is becoming a way of life in the industry although it is difficult for many people to subscribe to one more than one provider to circumvent a dispute.

If you want to see crappy guides and interface, I could show you the stuff on Cablevision boxes which looks like it was built with Windows 3.1 and the fact that it has taken them practically forever to finally get channels like BBC America and NFL Network and I would have to think that triple-play is the only thing that keeps people from defecting (although FiOS is able to get some of that market). DirecTV still has some issues with SD picture quality because the main 101 satellite has been maxed out for some time, but their HD picture quality is pretty good. On Demand is really not possible via satellite which is why that service still requires a high-speed internet connection since that can't be bounced from the birds like linear on-air programming and their big selling point has been having the most sports especially with their exclusivity on NFL Sunday Ticket and they make a shit load of money from the sports bars and restaurants which use Sunday Ticket and DirecTV sports programming as their selling point to get people to eat and drink since they can see that game they can't get at home.
