I spent very little time yesterday consuming political news yesterday, and now feel woefully uninformed for writing a blog.

That doesn't mean I'm looking for suggestions, though.

So, I've been a bit mum about this.

I guess I almost died again yesterday.

My White Blood Cell count was back up nicely, square in the treatment range. So I dutifully got in my recliner and they started pumping me full of steroids, and then Oxaliplatin.

I'd say about 45 minutes into the treatment, my bladder had enough (the drug is infused with a huge bag of saline.) Whilst in the toilet, I had a rather large coughing fit.

Got back to my chair, and all of a sudden, nothing was right. I started to "grey out", I felt flushed, broke out in rashes and hives, and most worrying of all, couldn't draw a full breath. My Pulse-ox dropped to 93 (should be 98-100) and I was quickly surrounded by two nurses and my Oncologist.

I got more Decadron (steroid) and 100 milligrams of Benadryl (liquid, right in the line.)

I'd say about a half-hour later everything finally started to settle back down. Of course, they immediately pulled me off the Oxalaplatin and flushed the line.

Doc says this is fairly normal - the Oxy builds up in the body, and usually late in the treatment cycle this happens when the body says "OK, I've had enough". I was told it usually happens around tx 8-9, so for me to make it to 10 1/2 is significant.

Bottom line...I'm being poisoned here. It's a fine line they tapdance along, trying to determine how much to kill the cancer without killing me. I guess I reached that limit yesterday.

(Curiously, I was the 3rd patient to have a reaction yesterday...one gentleman was mild, but the other poor soul had full-bore anaphylaxis and had to be rushed to the ER.)

It is said that "Allah will give no more than the soul can bear". Perhaps I have reached that point.

In any case...feeling better today. The Oxy is what gives me the most side effects, only getting a half-dose yesterday...I feel pretty good this am.

The Oxalaplatin they took me off yesterday was the trigger.

I asked about the other drug, and they said it's probably the most benign of the chemo drugs. I did not have any trouble after my symptoms receded yesterday; even went to the Troop Meeting last night.

The regimen has changed slightly...I'll still need an infusion of Leucovorin (B-vitamin), but then I'll get the 5FU bolus and the pump...I should be done in 3 hours instead of 5 next time.

I am truly impressed by this piece, having worked as a reporter. I must ask what will come next. The status quo seems to be unstable. I am reminded of the flag of a red sun at the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Benjamin Franklin was asked if it was a rising sun or a setting sun. He replied that is what was to be decided.

There are many false dawns before a true sunrise. Let us remember that before the Constitution, er had the Articles of Confederation. Before Americans declared a new country on this continent, we had the proposals of the Albany Congress did not bear fruit. Occupy Wall Street perhaps defined the problems, but not the solutions. Still, I have hope that we can emerge into a better era. We have much work to do, from ensuring economic justice in this country (go to parts of the South and West Sides of Chicago to see how bad things can get) to limiting the damage of global climate change. There will be change, but we do not know the shape. The hour is late and the universe is watching.

This does not bode well...

Jackson is apparently now convinced that he and his team of collaborators (the writers are Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Jackson and del Toro) possess a Joseph Smith-like relationship with Tolkien's spirit and are uniquely qualified to transfer his visions to the big screen. Ironically or not, this has resulted in a gargantuan new project that takes enormous liberties with the source material. This is a sprawling, shambling, full-length prequel to Jackson's Lord of the Rings, but not so much to Tolkien's.

Mondo, I hope that the Hobbit films are good. I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings, and I appreciate the effort that went into films. However, I think that I have to ask if Peter Jackson has gone too far or made some bad decisions.

Ahh there we go.. it's at least letting me quote again.

It's no secret that Chris Tolkien and Peter Jackson don't get along because CT didn't like the LOTR movies. Which means Jackson didn't have access to JRRT's expanded notes this time around. So he was forced to take some creative liberty with the screenplay.

All I know is I thought the LOTR trilogy was amazing, and mostly true to the books.

I don't know how Mr. Jackson is going to drag a single novel into three prequels; did he learn nothing from George Lucas?

I have every intention of seeing this (likely New Year's Eve). I hope it doesn't suck.

At least the visuals will be spectacular. New Zealand, here I come!

The stuff that is being dragged in is the for nerds only stuff in the appendices from the LoTR. Seriously, it is for girlfriendless (I speak from experience) high school Tolkein nerds. None of that has anything to do with the plot of "The Hobbit."

Rape is really confusing. I mean, how do you know if you’re raping someone? If they’re unconscious and you decide to have sex with them, is that rape? It is? Well, you could have fooled me. It’s just weird, you know — who even knows if the word “no” means “no,” or if the person you’re raping — er, just having consensual sex with — is observing Opposite Day?

Thankfully, someone is looking out for the poor, misunderstood rapists of the world. The Good Men Project, which describes itself as “a community of 21st Century thought leaders around the issue of men’s roles in modern life,” has decided to take a close look at rape. What they’ve found will shock you, if you’re unfamiliar with the site’s general Men’s Rights Advocate Lite bent. Alas, even if you’re familiar with The Good Men Project, you’ll probably be shocked; the posts are generally shocking. Indeed, this is the point where I offer a trigger warning for rape apology, victim-blaming and general awfulness.

Indeed, this is the point where I offer a trigger warning for rape apology, victim-blaming and general awfulness.

jeebus. MRA's totally piss me off.

Until we have more scientific evidence, I am willing to award them the title Scum of the Solar System.

It's not Marine One unless the president is abourd. Could be some training flights, or maybe another VIP is getting shuttled around.

Speaking as an av-dork, pilots need to maintain a minimum number of flying hours per month to remain "proficient". They could just be out joyriding for "stick time".

I see they failed to pass all the prescreening that adoptive parents have to leap through the Fire Rings of Fornax to satisfy.

Tri, this is a great article in the Gaurdian. Check it out.

Here is great quote on curing cancer:

Briefly, killing cancer cells while leaving normal cells unharmed is like trying to win an old fashioned infantry battle in which both sides are wearing the same uniform, except some of the enemy have slightly different shaped buttons, others have slightly longer bootlaces, others have slightly lacier underwear, and all have the ability to suddenly change clothes halfway through the fight.

Boy scout leader busted with ‘hundreds’ of child porn photos
By David Edwards
Thursday, December 13, 2012 15:43 EST

An assistant scout master in Long Island is facing child pornography charges after hundreds of photos of children as young as 5 years old were found on his computer.

The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office said on Thursday that Edward Orenchuk III was arrested and charged with “three counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child as a sexually motivated felony and three counts of possessing a sexual performance by a child,” according to NBC News.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice alleged that Orenchuk had posted a number of the photos on the Internet in September and October, allowing investigators to trace the images to his home. She said that Orenchuk had admitted having the photos on his computer after officers began searching his residence.

The Boy Scouts of America said that Orenchuk, who was an Eagle Scout, had been dismissed from his position as assistant scout master of Troop 243.

BREAKING NEWS FROM NBC:

Ambassador Susan Rice discusses her decision to withdraw her name from consideration for secretary of state.

By Tracy Connor, NBC News

Embattled U.N. envoy Susan Rice is dropping out of the running to be the next secretary of state after months of criticism over her Benghazi comments.

“Today, I made the decision that it was the best thing for our country, for the American people that I not continue to be considered by the president for nomination of secretary of state,” Rice told NBC’s Brian Williams.

“I didn’t want to see a confirmation process that was very prolonged, very politicized, very distracting and very disruptive because there are so many things we need to get done as a country and the first several months of a second term president’s agenda is really the opportunity to get the crucial things done.”

Rice noted that President Obama’s second-term agenda included “comprehensive immigration reform, balanced deficit reduction, job creation.”

I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers, Tri.
