The Road Less Traveled
Author: BobR    Date: 01/16/2013 03:42:01

I had a blog planned for Wednesday. It was to be yet another screed on something or other political. That all went into the dumpster when I found out that a friend is succumbing to cancer, and Raine and I will not get the opportunity to see him again.

Some of you may know John - he went by "Bounced Granola" at the old AAP board. He was a good activist liberal. We got to meet him the first time at a protest march in DC back when no one knew Raine and I were having an online "relationship". We all had a blast. We thought for certain he had figured it out, but - he hadn't.

It was later when Raine and I finally let others know about "us" that he was very supportive. Raine was unsure about selling her house in NY and moving to Atlanta to be with me when my divorce was not yet complete. John encouraged her to make the leap. I don't know the details of those conversations they had, but I suspect it was something along the lines of "sometimes in life you have to follow your heart and say 'fuck it' and take that chance...". Raine and I severed the ties with our individual pasts and made a future together. Were it not for John's support and encouragement, that may not have happened.

We did get to see John again one more time. It was the summer of 2006, and AAP decided to have a meetup in DC. I don't remember if it was for a protest... I actually don't remember too much at all. I know we had cocktails and made a video:

What I do remember is John's easygoing calm approach to everything. No stress, no worries, just enjoying the moment. He exuded an essence of being at peace with the world as we walked to an old-school Italian restaurant and had a blast. Sadly, that restaurant no longer exists, the building sacrificed upon the alter of progress. The bar at the Holiday Inn is still there, though, and everytime we happen into it, we look at the table where we sat so many years ago and drank and laughed and acted as silly as kids. It may seem odd that we feel this deep connection with someone we only met twice in person, but we have a long online history, and his gentle soul was a catalyst that led to our marriage.

If I recall correctly, John didn't find out about his cancer until it was the size of a grapefruit. He went through the operation and the usual treatments, and seemed to be getting better, but he had relapses. This latest one a few weeks ago seemed like it would be another he would fight off, or perhaps he only let us all believe that. We found out otherwise last night.

It's moments like this we are reminded of our own mortality. Death is the final disease which ails us all - none are immune. There's no going back and redoing your mistakes, there's no dress rehearsals or do-overs. Time - and life - moves in one direction only. Time is without end. Lives, however, always have a starting point and an ending point. Though we celebrate birthdays, and mourn those who preceed us in leaving this life, what is most important is what occurs between those two bookending milestones. We cannot take our riches to the grave; nor should we take any regrets.

Life is meant to be lived, to be enjoyed, to be cherished, and to be shared. We should love freely and never sit on the sidelines when we want to play the game. It was a bit of serendipity that this news item (written by Tina Fey) came across my feed about the same time as I got the news about John:
[In 1997], I moved from Chicago to New York to work at "Saturday Night Live." I packed up and was going through my things to see what I would take with me and what I'd leave behind. I found an orange folder -- a regular school folder -- in a bookshelf. As soon as I saw it, I knew what it was. There were quotes written all over the front of it. Some of them were: "Greet everything with 'Yes, and....'" "Make statements instead of putting the burden on others with questions." "Stay in the present, as opposed to focusing on the past or future." "The fun is always on the other side of a yes."
[..]
The things I learned in that class became part of the way I live my life. A couple of times I've been called on to do things -- jobs or whatever -- where I've felt, Maybe I'm not quite ready. Maybe it's a little early for this to happen to me. But the rules are so ingrained. "Say yes, and you'll figure it out afterward" has helped me to be more adventurous. It has definitely helped me be less afraid.

"We're offering you a job here at 'Saturday Night Live' -- can you move here within a week?"

"Ummm, yes I can."

"You know, you haven't been here that long, but do you want to move up and try to be one of the head writers?"

Feeling completely terrified inside, but saying, "Uhhh, yes, okay, yes, for sure."

"Do you wanna do 'Weekend Update' with Jimmy?"

Petrified. "Yes, thank you, of course!"

Self-doubt is natural, as is the tendency to take the safe route through life. That safe route, however, is paved with regrets. As the old Schlitz commercial used to say "You only go 'round once in life - grab for the gusto". Tina Fey said yes to the unknown and had a wonderful career making people laugh. John got Raine and I to say yes and we've built a wonderful life together.

To quote Robert Frost:
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference"

We'll meet you on that road again someday, John...

BobR and Raine, till you and John meet again in a place where no shadows fall, keep him close to your heart. I will remember him, and be glad that I knew him from a distance and that he was a great support to the two of you. Remember, love endures all things. May the love for John and his memory always be for a blessing. Shalom.

Well, damn. I saw the update on the book of face...curious that I only know some folks by online handle.

BG....go easily into the next phase, strong and faithful warrior.

Just thinking of poor old Dill, too.

Awfully close to home. The scouting community lost not one, but two parents this week (Council folks, nobody local) and the store has another new diagnosis in-hand.

What the hell is going on around here?

Comment by TriSec on 01/16/2013 14:12:08
Well, at least when I stay home I can listen to Momma on Current. For now. It's not Al-Jazeera yet.

(Snowing here, which is no big deal to me...but there was a truck accident on the Mass Pike westbound this am - road has been closed for hours, with a 25+ mile backup. So a commute wasn't an option today.)

I think science has gotten good at eliminating (or at least severely weakening) some of the tools of the grim reaper. The Big C, however, still holds power. That, and the dark side of scientific advancements that make our environment more toxic and prone to cause problems.

I didn't really get a chance to know BG, but I do remember him from the early AAP days.

Hasn't been much reason to smile this week all around, but that's all the more reason to do it.

Bobber asked me to pass the news about BG on to some of the AAP bloggers, CRT told me that Lower Slower Delaware's husband had passed away on Monday of a heart attack. After he had angioplasty. It has not been a good few days for the AAP?4F family.

I stayed in touch occasionally (and increasingly rarely) with LSD after the schism.

This just ain't right.

O Allah! Forgive him and have Mercy on him and give him strength and pardon him. Be generous to him and cause his entrace to be wide and wash him with water and snow and hail.

Cleanse him of his transgressions as white cloth is cleansed of stains. Give him an abode better than his home, and a family better than his family and a wife better than his wife. Take him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave (and of the fire)

Speaking of friends, I talked to my friend's dad a few times yesterday. He's gonna reimburse the money she took from what he's holding for her. But the problem now is she's missing - neither of us have heard from her since Sunday, and he's gotten no answer at her apartment several times since then.

Nah I'm pretty sure he got put away in jail for a long time (got busted for dealing). My guess is she just fell off the wagon and/or is avoiding contact with anyone so she doesn't have to deal with it. Good day, folks. I remember BG from the '06 meetup. There wasn't a protest when we went down in '06 (unlike '05) I think we just wanted to get together. I don't think I had heard from him since then since he was only at AAP intermittently and then I really stopped frequenting the message boards but I can't forget that video (I think I did help out a bit). I pretty much associate with the AAPers on facebook since I wasn't part of the blowup. Although there are a few people who seem to have drifted away .

I still wonder what happened to PeteMoon since he used to be so prolific.

Another WWII tidbit I didn't know....Orde Wingate is buried at Arlington!

(British General, in charge of the Chindit ops in C-B-I...killed in a plane crash in '44.)

Apparently, 8 of the 10 persons on board the plane were Americans....they had no way to ID shattered remains in those days, so the whole lot of them were exhumed from their wartime grave and transported to Virginia...

Who knew?

Paul's in town - he just did a segment on WBUR's "here and now".

Had my question read on the air:

Mr. Rieckhoff....what can we do to re-connect ordinary citizens to our military? Over the past decade of war, it became very easy to be disconnected from the realities faced by active-duty personnel and their families. It seems to me that such a small percentage of the population has any direct connection, that it's very easy to "overlook" what is happening out there. Getting the general population more involved would be extremely helpful as a support network, job-finding network, and a whole host of other things that tend to be done badly by government or the VA.

So, I took a B-complex pill today and now it feels like my hands are actually worse. Doc said this was supposed to help?

But on the plus side, it's mostly the same B vitamins that are in 5-hour energy, so I should be bouncing off the walls this afternoon.

O2, particularly through a nasal cannula, is particularly dry. It's a little better on a mask, but not by much.

I just came here to add in my feelings at this sad news. I wish to bring no past animosities here, bygones are long gone, and I truly hope the best for all the folks here.

I've had other bad news lately from friends, one retired close friend died at Christmas, and another close friend is dying of cancer. This just adds on top of things.

I just spoke to LSD on the phone, she's always been a great friend, and LSD, Bounced and I had dinner at a restaurant along the highway in Texas a few years ago. Bounced had Christmas Dinner with my wife and I several years ago. But since I travel so much, I tend to lose touch with people. I am saddened for that.

For the record, I think it was I that first shortened "Lower, Slower Delaware" to LSD, which seemed like a more fitting name...

If someone could let me know if Bounced is in shape to hear from friends, and how one could get hold of him, I'd like him to know how much he means to old friends.

Again, I come here under the peaceful banner of shared sadness and loss, and don't plan to hang around past this time to bother anyone. We did have good times, at one time. My memory tends to go towards those times.

It's good to see you Gou. This is by far, NOT a bother -- at all.

I believe right now, the best way to contact John is via Facebook. He is John Robbe.

He's home and in what I believe is a hospice situation now, too tired and ill to talk, but I know that he is able to see things on FB and social media.

That said, His sister is aware of this blog post , and I will make sure she is able to see communications from those that may not be on Facebook. I hope that works for you, GoU. I suspect you you aren't a FB kinda guy

I'll send him a message. Thank you for your kindness.

It's times like this that makes old fights and animosities seem so distant and...

pointless.
