What A Meet-Up!
Author: m-hadley    Date: 04/28/2008 10:42:12

This past weekend I flew to Washington DC with the intention of meeting up with some online friends - folks I'd never actually met before but with whom I already felt a strong connection. On Saturday night I participated in the FourFreedoms Meet Up at the Holiday Inn in Rosslyn (a block and a half off of DC's Metro Blue Line). I shared a room with Starling, an adorable lesbianite who had inadvertently booked a suite with a sofa, coffee table, comfy chairs, two balconies for the smokers, plenty of tabletop space and a working ice machine just down the hall. Among those attending the Four Freedoms Meet-up were Mondo (from Jacksonville), BobR & Raine from Atlanta, ShelaghC, HoneyBearKelly, Livingoli, Wicked Pam (Mala), Starling, Stanley, the blog's official lurker (every blog must have one ) and me (mfaye).

We were all treated to an evening of Raintinis (a spectacular beverage concocted by Raine. Here's what goes into a Raintini -Vanilla Vodka (count 4), Seltzer water (count 1 or 2), Splash of cherry juice (from maraschino cherries), gently shaken then poured over three maraschino cherries in a martini glass. I recommend letting the cherries soak in the bottom of your martini glass all night long and just before calling it a night, slurping down the drunken cherries for an outstanding buzz cap - like a night cap but much better.

As you might expect amongst a group of bloggers, several of us brought along our laptops and we played Steph and the Mooks' Friday show which most of us had missed as we were en route to the meet-up. But with such a boisterous group of people gathered in a studio-apartment sized hotel room, the conversation overwhelmed the sound of the show. The conversation kicked off as I shared with the group a disturbing comment, by a fellow blogger who happens to be a dog. This doggie blogger suggested that I, of all people, might want to join her imaginary deluded call for the murder of Hillary Clinton - we gathered around a laptop and watched the clip of Keith Olbermann's apparently threatening remark made against Senator Clinton. This remark was the unspoken inspiration for the astonishing (shocking and dismaying) comment that left a very sour taste in my mouth. And to which I will respond in due time, I am still recovering from my excellent weekend and don't want to bring myself down by sparring with a one-time friend over comments delusional and outrageous.

Back to the Meet-up...the topics of the night travelled from Raine's report on the on-air soap opera "How Air America turns," "Does this smell like it's turned to you?" "Yes, I think it has," was the concensus. We called TriSec and toasted him via speaker phone. We toasted Stephanie, Chris Lavoie, Jim Ward, and Rebekah Baker. Mondo made an awesome pizza run, BobR's beer flowed freely and the Raintinis kept coming. All-in-all it was an amazing evening of political banter, good friends exhanging ideas (political, familial, relationship and otherwise). I can't wait for the next meet-up Photos coming soon...

Here's the offensive comment that was posted on my blog:
"So, tell us, Faye, are you ready to join your and Steph's boyfriend Keith Olbermann in calling for the murder of Senator Clinton? That would settle the Democratic primary race for you once and for all, wouldn't it? God forbid we should let those pesky voters settle things, eh? Nice to see that His Hopeness inspires such high-minded thoughts in his delusional followers."

Heya guys and gals,

I worked on this yesterday afternoon, but know that there are many magic moments I failed to mention (early-onset Alzheimers or too many Raintinis - take your pick :). Feel free to add any and all comments. Mostly I just want to say how much I enjoyed meeting each and every one of you and am already looking forward to our next meet-up (in Tulsa, perhaps?). I hope the next one includes Velveeta Jones, TriSec, and Auntie Azalea. You all rock my world :D

Cheers,

mfaye

Great post Faye. Sounds like I missed a good time.

I'll be around today. Though, if it quits raining I will continue the "Sidewalk Saga". :(

(Yes, I did NOT finish my sidewalk............... Anyone have a backhoe?)

Comment by TriSec on 04/28/2008 13:11:16
Morning, folks!

Home with Mrs. TriSec today...she tore another page off the calendar this morning, but didn't particularly care for the number...

I'm betting we'll have some sluggish bloggers this morning, but we are usually here for the show.

No offense Faye, but I'm planning a major offensive to get the next meetup in Boston. As you well know, planning for the next convention begins the day after the last one ends...

Good morning everyone. <---- I think we all need some of this in the AM.

Yes, MNRN. We usually talk about Momma at this time. The first hour's normally sluggish as people still wake up or go to work. Today will probably be extra slugggish. I think Raine and Mondo are going to hit a few sites in the ATL today before Mondo goes back to Jacksonville.

Comment by livingonli on 04/28/2008 13:17:42
I think for the next meet-up we should make it Thursday through Monday which would allow us ;

a) more flexibility

b ) allow us to spend more time together since it goes by much too fast with only under two days together.

TriSec,

Boston is fine with me - I used to live in Somerville, then my sister's husband statrted making real money and we moved to Arlington. I was the carzy auntie who lived in the attic and helped my sis and her hubby with childcare. Good times and great pizza (Greek, I think it was )

Well, BobR is going to set-up the photobucket account for the pictures so stay tuned for that.

Fox can certainly show its bias in what camera angles they use at the convention which I am sure they will do if they are the pool feed.

Couldn't someone raise a stink on this?

Study Links HPV to Lung Cancer

Despite Threat of Lung Cancer, Conservatives Still Don't Want Their Kids Vaccinated

(snip)

Recent studies have found connections between HPV and cancers of the mouth and throat, but the University of Louisville study released late last week is the first to associate the infection with lung cancer.

(snip)

Conservative parents and activists have condemned the vaccine, marketed under the name Gardasil, since it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration last year, claiming it would -- like easily available condoms -- encourage young people to engage in promiscuous sex.

Those same parents and groups say the news showing a link between the virus and lung cancer, which means it could affect not only their daughters but also their sons, does not change their opposition to the drug.

More at the link.

Nice - let your kids die from any one of several kinds of cancer rather than immunize them because they *might* be inclined to have pre-marital sex.

I had to fill out pages of forms and go through a background check to adopt my second cat, but any set of idiots with sperm and ovaries can have a baby.

Velveeta is pissed!

Well, first thing that set me off: went to Rush's website (following a link regarding "Operation Chaos") and do you know that he REALLY points out the he was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize? You can imagine, I'm sure, being that he's "Mr BIG FAT EGO"!

Anywho, I think I'll write a letter to the Nobel committee to have them rescind his nomination -- being that I think its unseemly for a Nobel PEACE nominee to endorse rioting!

:rage:

Oh, then I got a phone call from one of my CC companies asking if I knew that I was late paying a bill. Hellooooo Mr. Pot, Mr Kettle on line 1.

I loved the National Gallery even though my legs were killing me after.

I'm more into modern art than the classical stuff but it was all good.

And of course the company could not have been better.

Our local food banks are in way too much trouble! Besides, now that I'm temporarily working at an organic food store, I get 20% off - plus they sell bulk stuff. I'll stock up on the essentials: cofffee, cheese and............. um...................lets see.............?

That's why most of us also don't like the idea of Rachel's first hour being a simulcast of MSNBC. She does a three-hour show of which she only actually does one hour. They should make the 6 PM show the simulcast of Rachel's Air America show instead of the other way around.

I had a mini meltdown/rant last week about this MSNBC simulcast. TV doesn't work on the radio and I don't want to listen to others during her show to that extent. I don't like the TV panel format. It's annoying and not much is accomplished, especially when they're yelling or talking over each other. Not good radio. I'm thinking Rachel can't get out of her contract with AAR so she is trying to balance the two, but it doesn't work for me. I think I may be regretting hoping for this TV thing. I like the radio show much better.

Senator Slams Rush For "Incendiary" Comments - 4/28 - Senator Ken Salazar, a Democrat from Colorado, has asked that Clear Channel "reprimand" Rush Limbaugh for what Salazar calls Limbaugh's "clear exhortation" for riots during August's Democratic National Convention in Denver. Limbaugh said last week that he was not calling for a riot in Denver but only "dreams" of it, to the tune of "White Christmas." "Now, I'm not inspiring or inciting riots. I'm dreaming. I'm dreaming of riots in Denver," Limbaugh said on the air, mimicking the holiday tune. But Salazar, in his letter to Clear Channel, which owns Limbaugh's Denver station, characterized Limbaugh's comments as "incendiary." The Denver Post has more......

Randi Rhodes To XM? - 4/25 - DCRTV hears rumblings that Randi Rhodes, who recently got bounced from lefty radio network Air America for making some nasty comments about Hillary Clinton and other Democrats, could be again heard on DC-based XM Satellite Radio. Stay tuned.....

Nev. GOP recesses state convention, angering Paul supporters

April 27, 2008 01:37 PM EST | AP

RENO, Nev. — Outmaneuvered by raucous Ron Paul supporters, Nevada Republican Party leaders abruptly shut down their state convention and now must resume the event to complete a list of 31 delegates to the GOP national convention.

Outnumbered supporters of expected Republican presidential nominee John McCain faced off Saturday against well-organized Paul supporters. A large share of the more than 1,300 state convention delegates enabled Paul supporters to get a rule change positioning them for more national convention delegate slots than expected.

A surprise because the Italian food was better in Austria than Italy. Those who crossed the border took the secrets. Also, they know fresh in Austria. It was quite the scene when Frau of Death went to the pond nearby and whacked a fish over the head for table 4.

Swiss jumps using Leonardo da Vinci-designed parachute

A 36-year-old Swiss amateur parachutist made a successful 650-metre (2,130-foot) drop Saturday using a replica of a parachute designed more than 500 years ago by Leonardo da Vinci.

"I came down... smack in the middle of the tarmac at Payerne military airport," said Olivier Vietti-Teppa. "A perfect jump."

Vietti-Teppa is the first person to have made it safely to the ground with the Leonardo model.

In 2000, Britain's Adrian Nicholas tried it but had to pull the ripcord on a modern backup parachute to complete his descent safely.

Vietti-Teppa jumped from a hovering helicopter and the Leonardo parachute opened at 600 metres, he reported.

The parachute he used was made using modern fabric along lines designed by the Renaissance genius. The specifications were found in a text dating from 1485.

The parachute consists of four equilateral triangles, seven metres on each side, made of parachute fabric, Vietti-Teppa explained.

Is there anything he didn't do? I LOVE DaVinci!

ReignDown... A little background about the concert we did not attend at the Mall this weekend... :thud:

The Story of the Vision

The vision began in July 2005 with a woman who describes herself as “just a stay-athome- mom.” Shawn-Marie Cole was awakened from sleep late at night after hearing her name spoken three times. In the same way that Samuel responded in 1 Samuel 3, Shawn-Marie finally realized it was the Lord, got out of bed, and said, “Okay, Lord, I’m listening. What is it You want to share with me?”

As Shawn-Marie began to pray and really seek the Lord she began to feel a very deep sorrow, but at the same time it was also a deep love. She believed she was feeling only what she could imagine was just a fraction of what the Lord’s heart feels for His children. She then began to see a picture of seas of people raising their hands in worship. They then fell to their knees in repentance. She saw people doing the same thing all over the nation in many different venues. Together they were crying out for God’s mercy, begging Him to be back in the center of their lives and in America.

Then the picture shifted to Washington, D.C., where she saw a prayer ministry leader (Pastor Bjorn Pedersen) praying over President George W. Bush. President Bush was standing on the steps of the Capitol. He fell to his knees, and with his arms outstretched and tears streaming down his cheeks, he whispered the words, “I’m sorry.” She then heard the Lord say, “I have never forsaken you nor have I ever abandoned you. I was there when America has been hit at its core. I was there through the hurricanes, the tornadoes, and the earthquakes. I was there when you lost your father, your mother, your best friend, your child. I was there. It is you who have turned your backs on Me! And it is time—time to bring Me back to the center. The peace you so desperately seek can only be found in Me!”

Let me chime in with this shocking news, (according to American Family Association).

Procter & Gamble promotes explicit open-mouth homosexual kissing

Procter & Gamble has resumed using explicit, open-mouth homosexual kissing in their soap opera, "As the World Turns." P&G decided to include this type of content as a commitment to "diversity." P&G stopped showing such scenes some months ago, but has now decided to again help promote the homosexual agenda which includes homosexual marriage.

Gay activists are hopeful that the P&G effort will desensitize viewers to the homosexual lifestyle and help make the unhealthy and immoral lifestyle more acceptable to society, especially to children and youth.

View a scene from the April 23, 2008 episode by P&G. WARNING – content is repulsive!

While I'm sure the men at AFA viewed the two kissing men over and over and over.... I can tell you that the scene does NOT include "open mouthed homosexual kissing". Instead the cute boys open their mouths between little pecks on the lips.

Frankly, I feel gypped and I will be complaining to AFA. That's false advertising!!

Comment by IzzyBitz on 04/29/2008 01:32:51
I also heard a story about those darned gays today. Sorry I don't remember who conducted it and I believe it was in the South somewhere. Anyhoo, they had homosexual couples kissing in public and then asked people for their reactions to what they saw. Most of them were negative and one person actually called the police! However, they had been informed of the survey, so the coppers just told them to cool it in public to appease the person whose psyche was permanently damaged by the sight of people of the same sex kissing. OY!

Rachel's Mom posted on her blog last Friday. *g*

Basically? "Please don't make my daughter feel lousy. She's doing the best she can."

What museum was this in?

I would never make Rachel feel lousy. It's the MSNBC and AAR who get my complaints. I think she's stuck between a rock and a hard place contract wise. Good on Mrs. Maddow for protecting her cub.

What Mala said! Mondo in the HIZZY. Specifically, my hizzy. I am home safe. About an hour later than I anticipated cause well I stopped at rest area about an hour south of Atlanta and slept for about an hour.

If they haven't been posted here are some of the repeatedly used lines this weekend.

EXIT NOW!

This was most commonly said in God's Trailer Park (see below). Every exit had such important stuff that there was a declaritive command to exit, now.

"Two more hours." Stan, Bob myself and I think Raine kept saying this.

"God's Trailer Park" This is upland South Carolina between about Spartenburg and the North Carolina boarder. There were many and sundry creepy Jesus billboards as well as the church that faced the interstate.

"Baby Jesus has a penis!" Raine pointing at 15th century Italian statue of the Modonna and Child. He was buck naked and did have a penis.

"Look at the unit on that Savior!" My comment to Raine after she pointed out the Baby Jesus Penis. We will both be going to Hell for these comments.

Mondo, glad you made it home OK. Do you have to go back to the salt mine tomorrow?

No worries, Tri. There is a Cafe Risque on I-75 too. There are several other porn super stores and as an added bonus many "Asian spas."
