Still processing the events from yesterday. It was a scary situation that ended up tragically. Why she did what she did, we will probably not know, but it does appear to be a case of a very sick woman. Postpartum depression perhaps, but there are reports that she suffered a head injury a while back as well. NBC news reports:
The woman who led authorities on a chase from the White House to the Capitol before she was killed by police may have thought that President Barack Obama was stalking her, law enforcement sources told NBC News. (snip)

Dr. Barry Weiss, a dentist, told NBC Connecticut that Carey was working for him in January 2012 when she suffered a fall and missed two to three weeks. He said that she appeared increasingly stressed after an unplanned pregnancy. Relatives have said that she may have suffered postpartum depression.
She tried to crash onto White House grounds and led a chase to the ground of the Capitol. It was a responsible assumption that the car was being used as weapon.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier stated that the system worked.
At the White House and at the Capitol, the security perimeter worked, Lanier said, adding that a Capitol Police officer and a Secret Service agent had been injured.

"They did exactly what they were supposed to do. They stopped a suspect from breaching the security perimeter in a vehicle at both locations."

No shots were fired at the White House, but agents gave chase. As the car closed in on the Capitol, the seat of Congress, it was cornered by police vehicles and armed officers on foot.

Footage aired by broadcasters showed the woman's car executing a tight U-turn as shots rang out, and then speeding off. Shortly afterwards it hit another barrier and more shots were fired.

Lanier, while refusing to speculate on the cause of the incident, said it "does not appear in any way to be an accident. This was a lengthy pursuit."
It's is a sad story, and more details are emerging, but I honestly don't see how this woman could have saved her own life once she engaged in a car chase. At that point, her car was a weapon, and no one knew if there were explosives, fire arms etc., in the vehicle. No one knew, or had time to deem her anything other than a threat to the public.

It's a terribly sad situation all around. A child lost a mother. A mother lost a child. I'm glad there were so few deaths.

A gaggle of Ole Miss students, including members of the football team, disrupted the Ole Miss theater department's performance of "The Laramie Project" on Tuesday evening with heckling and homophobic remarks, according to the school newspaper.

"The Laramie Project" is a play about the aftermath of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student who was gay. Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson were convicted of beating Shepard and tying him to a fence where he was left to die. Both received consecutive life sentences.

I was under the impression that the result of a "lynch mob" is a dead person. So unless they wheeled Rafael out on a gurney maybe that Refucklikan should come up with another term.

She then went on to tell me that she was finally going to her Town Clerk and was planning on changing her voting registration. (Don't hold your breath - she's changing to "unenrolled").

She's been on the fence a while, but she did emphatically state that "this was what it took", and further added "The GOP needs to get their act together, or they're going to be GONE."

Jeez guys, do I have to tell the story about my lone experience with "socialized medicine" (Canada)

Summer of 1986 - I got the chicken pox in the backwoods at a Scout Jamboree. (about 40 miles from Halifax)

My temp flirted with 105 - The docs onsite later told me that they had a helo on standby to medevac me to the hospital had it gone up another half-degree. I was essentially in a febrile coma for 24 hours. For the duration of the jamboree, we were all considered Canadian citizens and were entitled to all the rights and privilegdes thereof - no costs were passed back to my healthplan, Scout insurance, or my person after they saved me.

The woman killed yesterday had drugs for depression and Schizophrenia at her apartment. It appears as tho a letter was found as well.
The source told CNN that Carey left a letter addressed to the boyfriend at her apartment and that it appeared to contain white powder. The letter was being tested for hazardous substances.

You know, I just don't buy this. I don't buy that DC/capitol/SS police were trigger happy yesterday. Not now at least.

On Thursday, too, the sound of gunshots on Capitol Hill did not prompt the assumption that the cops had their guns out: instead, the media began asking about “the shooter.” But no weapons were found in the car. And many details still remain unknown.
I think it is entirely apples and Oranges to compare these two events.

How were they to know that this woman was mentally ill? WEre they supposed to ignore national security and public security?

20% of AF Academy classes shut down


The Air Force Academy has halted 20 percent of its classes, closed its cadet library and other study centers, and canceled all flying operations at the 306th Flying Training Group due to the government shutdown.

More than two-thirds of the academy’s civilian staff — or more than 1,000 employees — are now furloughed, the academy said in an Oct. 1 release. This has forced the academy to dramatically scale back its operations. Nearly 450 civilian employees have been excepted from furloughs and will stay on the job to ensure safety and security at the academy.

“The entire Air Force leadership is working hard to guide us through this turbulent time,” the release said. “Here at the Air Force’s Academy, we will continue to conduct our mission to educate and train cadets, but that will be much more challenging without our civilian and contractor teammates who will be furloughed.”


Check the link for a list of things affected. But another story contradicts one of the bullet points: FOOTBALL MUST GO ON!!!


Pentagon OKs service academy football games
The Defense Department gave the go-ahead late Wednesday for the military service academies to play their scheduled football games this weekend, including the sold-out Navy vs. Air Force matchup in Annapolis, Md. The games were in jeopardy because the Pentagon suspended all intercollegiate athletics at the shutdown's start. Army is scheduled to play Boston College, but neither athletic department had officially announced the game was happening.

It's a quiet Friday, so I'm working on a citywide training report. I'm the District Trainer, so I think it would be bad form for adults in "my" units to be untrained.

I have to tell you, personally, I think Exxon's lawsuit is stupid. the logo's cannot in any way be confused.


That said Sirota and his overly hyperbole filled article actually makes me feel sympathetic. The reason why is this: Sirota is actually reinforcing tort reform. He might not realize it, but he's supporting a RW meme.

Nahhh. He's a coworker and I get along with him well. I essentially said it's not a reason to hold credit of the US hostage. If they don't like what Obama did, impeach him, that's what the Republicans want anyway.

The law suit isn't the point of the what Exxon is doing. What they are doing is proving to the USPTO that the are actively protecting their trademarks from any kind of "confusingly similar" use of the logo. This is a common business practice. Does it make sense, no it is trademark law. If I had had the motivation, I would have said fuck it and gone to law school specifically work in trademark law, it is really fascinating.

I wrote about that the other day.

Either way -- remind him that Obamacare has nothing to do with the budget. It would be like shutting down government because we have MPG standards.

Use any federal law, for that matter. It has nothing to do with passing a resolution to fund the government because Congress could not get their shit together to bas a federal budget before the beginning of OCtober.

It's not the waivers at all. That is truly a trojan horse.

They are Exxon/Mobile now. The lawsuit would have to show somehow that FX is going to create irreparable damage to thier brand, and I just don;t see that.

*X* aside, colors and font is going to have to come into play -- and that I just don't see. Also -- only dyslexic's would miss that the axis is totally flipped. (one is at 45 degrees, the other at maybe -- 30. )

The logos are totally different. The audience for both are totally different.

I don't think it was government waivers but more to "big business" waivers that Obama has no authority to provide. Still think the best argument is if it's against the law then impeach. Still no reason to hold government hostage.

I know what you are thinking and why. Remember it is all about meeting the standard for policing your marks. The joined X , the angle and the attachment, don't matter. It is will they cause confusion in the market place which assumes (rightly or wrongly) that people are really fucking stupid and will confuse the two companies.

Any trademark analyst worth their salt would have included the Exxon logo in a search report to FX for their FXX logo. They would have marked it not pertinent (or as we called in the Shark Tank, "bogus, dude!" Good times, good times).

Disney would have a field day with that considering how lawsuit happy they are in protecting their branding. Which is why I love when people note that while their versions of their stories are copyrighted, the original works which they made money off were all in public domain. And Disney was the big pusher of many of the copyright extensions in recent years when Mickey Mouse was getting close to entering public domain.

Yeah, but we are not talking about copyright, we are talking about trademarks. Big difference. Don't even get me started on our broken patent system. Apple has gotten a patent on a glass spiral stair case. I for the life of me can't understand how this is a new and unique device.
