How Did We Get Here? Where Do We Go Now?
Author: Raine    Date: 11/19/2015 14:01:44

This five minute video explains it all very succinctly, there are no good guys in this story.

There are, however many innocent victims. They are the people begging to leave their country to survive.

Syria's war: A 5-minute history

To understand the bloody, convoluted war happening inside and outside of Syria's borders, you need to watch this:

I wrote this in 2013 and it is worth another look. At that time, this blog was discussing the Alawites, Shiites, Sunnis and Christians without even accounting for the ethnicity of the people living and fleeing from Syria -- the Kurds being one example.

Since that time Daesh, as was shown in the video above, has metastasized its blood cult in Syria and Iraq. There is a reason why what happened in Paris was so shocking to the world. Daesh has made its face known clearly to the west. Until that time, it was just a thing in the Middle East. I mentioned that in my post on Monday.

It is important to remember that while we are talking about Daesh, these atrocities have been happening for years.

An estimated 9 million Syrians have fled their homes since the outbreak of civil war in March 2011, taking refuge in neighbouring countries or within Syria itself. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), over 3 million have fled to Syria's immediate neighbours Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. 6.5 million are internally displaced within Syria. Meanwhile, under 150,000 Syrians have declared asylum in the European Union, while member states have pledged to resettle a further 33,000 Syrians. The vast majority of these resettlement spots – 28,500 or 85% – are pledged by Germany.
I cannot stress this enough, the atrocities committed by Daesh are terrible, but this has been happening long before things took such an awful turn last Friday.

It's terrifying. Even more terrifying is listening to so many of our conservative-minded politicians call for more isolationism in our own country. It's not just unAmerican - it is inhumane to blame the victims for the atrocities done to them. There are over 9 million refugees, countless people dead and maimed and here in the United States people are losing their shit over ten thousand people. As of August 2014, the United Nations had registered 619,000 refugees in Jordan, with over 80,000 registered in the refugee camp Za’atri.

Jordan is smaller than Colorado, take a look at this.

The only thing these refugees (and those that want to leave, but cannot) are guilty of is that they are citizens of Syria. They have the unfortunate experience of not being westerners, white and maybe as privileged as so many in our nation are. We are so free and privileged that we have the right to ignore these words:

Hello.

Syria has unfortunately become Ground Zero for WWIII. Unlike all predictions, it won't be a massive nuclear war - it will be the proxy war as described in the video.

By that rubric, we have already had WWIII in the form of the proxy wars of our client states in the mid-east. Suez War in 56, Six-Day War in 67, The Ramadan/Yom Kippur War in 73.

Not to mention our direct action against a client state of the USSR in South East Asia.

This time there are a lot more players involved, and no clear allies or enemies

Well, if you put it that way, then yeah.

Oh, I forgot a couple of proxy wars Iran - Iraq & Afganistan. The first was kind of a weird one. Iraq had been backed by the USSR until they picked that fight with Iran. The Iranian army at the beginnings of the war had a crap-ton of US military hardware since prior to 79 they were our boys. Since post-revolution we decided we needed to back Iraq in that fight. In Afganistan in the 80s the roles were reversed from Viet-Nam. The USSR was the imperialist power and we were backing the insurgents. We all know how that worked out.

Maybe the greater point is if I may paraphrase Vezzinni from The Princess Bride, don't get involved in a proxy war in Asia.

Jacksonville's mayor outs himself as a fearful hick.

Again I am embarrassed to be from Jacksonville due to either a civic or religious leader saying something heartless or stupid.

Just emailed my mayor explaining why he is an ignorant, xenophobic racist hick. I cited the Gawker article I posted.
