Snap out of it! It's not really happening!
Author: Raine    Date: 07/14/2008 12:21:40

That's it. It's you. When you read articles like this, that mention the very real possibility of more banks failing this year - 90 banks... oh, btw, IndyMac was never on that list. You shouldn't worry, tho. It's just crazy mental thinking!

By now, I am sure you heard Phill Gramm tell us that it's is a mental recession, and that we are a nation of whiners. Of course - someone like Mr. Gramm can say this. He is rich. He doesn't face the things that you and I face everyday. Will the check clear before or AFTER I get the money in the bank? Can I afford to put gas in my tank this week, or should I fill my pantry with food? John McCain claims that Mr. Gramm doesn't speak for him... but John McCain has been telling us it is all in our head as well.

Here is someone else who "doesn't" speak for John McCain:
McCASKILL: If you look at the tax plans by these two candidates, you can, in fact, bring down the deficit by giving tax cuts to most of America. As long as you make a very thin sliver of them pay more. We have done a lot for the hedge fund -- for corporate CEOs in eight years. You know, it hasn't turned out so well. We lost almost a half a billion -- half a million jobs since January. 428,000 jobs since January. And in January John McCain was saying nice things about the economy. so --

FIORINA: That is not true.

McCASKILL: It is true. -- He said this economy is in pretty good shape.

BROKAW: Said it would take care of itself. We just showed that. He said that we'll work our way through the economy. Let me --

FIORINA: I've been around long enough to know you can make a sound bite say anything. The reality is that John McCain has been saying for months and months and months --

BROKAW: We didn't make that up.
No, Mr. Brokaw didn't make that up... And for someone who has been around enough, well, the denials from the people who DON'T speak for John McCain are stunning. Here is a video that has only been around for a few days...
The denials of what this man has said and has not said are rather stunning. But, don't worry, it is all in your head Americans. When you can't afford a vacation, it's your own damn fault for not saving enough money. It's your own fault for not working 3 jobs. That is the Republican way. It isn't the POLICIES that we have had for 16 years, it's your fault... Or, it's Chuck Schumer's... Seriously.
Why? Why would a federal official with enormous power, destroy an institution on which tens of thousands of depositors (not all of whom are insured) and employees depend? Why would a New York Senator attack a Pasadena bank, acting as some sort of amateur, self-appointed, long-distance bank examiner?
See? It's Schumer's fault!

As we sadly watch this *mental recession*, this thing that is all in our head, remember that Phil, and Carly and John McCain are multi millionaires. John McCain doesn't have a mortgage to worry about. Phil Gramm made a lot of money when his wife was on the Board of Directors of Enron... she did pretty well for herself. Carly made MILLIONS before getting fired at HP, and made money going out the door afterwards. Do you REALLY think these people know what it is like for Americans?

Of course not... but, in John McCain World, War is peace, Freedom is slavery, Ignorance is strength... and sadly, there are people out there who believe it. I call them the 23%-ers, you can call them the Republican Base. And make no mistake, John McCain is one of them.

:peace: and

Hi Raine!

Yeah, I'm mentally recessed this morning. Started yesterday as I was muttering obscenites under my breath at what that bitch Carly Fiorina did to HP (where I work used to be part of HP) while doing a complete system restore on my Dad's PC for probably the 7th or 8th time. I have it down to a science, only takes a bit more than 3 hours.

Oofda, you worked for HP, rabbit? So you see? It's YOUR fault Carly got fired!

Great post Raine!

I loved Schumer's response re: they said his comments were as reckless as yelling fire in a crowded movie theater. Schumer said (paraphrasing) - That's typical for the Bush administration, starts a fire then blames the person who calls 911 to put it out... Love ya' Chuck! (except for the Mukasey vote grrr....)

Morning, folks!

Well, speaking of the Republican Base, I managed to stun the wingnuts-in-law into silence yesterday. It went like this...

We were up in Belmont yesterday for a wee gathering for our anniversary. (12 years today.)

So, a family friend of the wingnuts-in-law also happens to be next door neighbors and a personal friend of Governor Empty Suit.

Anyway, talk turns to politics, as it often does, and I know mum-in-law tried to bait me by asking what I thought about Mitt as the VP.

I was quite enthusiastic..."Oh, I'm hoping for that; it's a great idea".

Well, now they were surprised I didn't take the bait...."Oh, that's unusual from you..."

Me, victoriously: "Heh. A non-conservative candidate that has no credibility with the evangelistic base, and a Mormon Cultist. That's the Republican dream ticket, isn't it?"

: stunned silence :

The subject was hastily changed.

Not really, this place used to be HP, the medical equipment arm. Then it became Agilent Healthcare when Carly spun everything off for a short time until we came under the Philips umbrella and that's when I came in.

It could be an ironic commentary about how SOME feel about our OWN tactics during this war, right, and therefore extremely, extremely, funny.

I posted this story over on the Message baord. HE REALLY is out of touch. He also said, from that article...
Mr. McCain, who with his wife, Cindy, has an adopted daughter, said flatly that he opposed allowing gay couples to adopt. “I think that we’ve proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no, I don’t believe in gay adoption,” he said.

Well, I won't bring up the obvious things about adoption. I'm glad Mr. McCain and his wife were able to.

But did they go through Catholic Charities, or another agency that won't even consider gay couples? Because that would be working with what you believe in.

I doubt they'd be hypocrites or anything, right?

I have to admit it - I've been pretty damn lazy the past few weeks.. I suppose it's because after the crazy primary season we had I just ran out of energy.. and then the heat and humidity make me not want to move at all, and this shoulder thing and sapping my finances.. urgh! Enough!

So I started workin' in the yard this week... I figure maybe it'll help me feel better and ease some of the tension with my landlord. Now if I can just get back into the flow of the campaign again. Speaking of which.. is anyone from up my way planning volunteer trips up to New Hampshire? I had a lotta fun doing that back in '04 and I'd love to go up there again.

Here we go so lets drink a toast, to those clever bombs, and the men who built them.

(chorus)

There they go now, there go all my friends

There they go now, marching off to war again

With their bright flags waving in the wind

There they go now, marching off to war again

Smiling proudly, with their heads in the clouds.

Dont you know this is better than any video friend, its an action movie.

Here we go watch the bad guys get their butts kicked. really makes me feel good.

Here we go watching cnn, the adrenaline rushes through my veins.

Dont you know its a feel good show, electronic bliss. its a video, video...

Maybe not as much in music. But does it seem that artists who lean right tend to be less talented than those that lean left. Right-wing actors are proof of that. Most have limited range or have lost their skills when their politics moved rightward.

Johnny Ramone is. I know he and Joey have gotten into fierce arguments when it comes to politics since Joey's politics have been more leftward.

Past tense there Liv, both Joey and Johnny are dead. The only living original Ramone is Tommy.

I keep hoping for a reunion thing, they were such an amazing live band, but it's not very likely.

After he did the original Batman soundtrack score, his Oingo Boingo songs got longer and less "poppy", like they were all turning into mini-soundtracks. The closest we got to more Oingo was Nightmare Before Christmas with Danny writing and singing the songs...

HEre, the article from April... McCain on women...

Women need more schooling, said John McCain yesterday, explaining his opposition to a bill that would reverse a U.S. Supreme Court decision that makes it tougher for employees to sue for unlawful pay discrimination.

"They need the education and training, particularly since more and more women are heads of their households, as much or more than anybody else," he said.
Anybody else?

The big Oil Myth... or one of the big ones.
While the U.S. oil industry wants access to more federal lands to help reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, U.S.-based companies are shipping record amounts of gasoline and diesel fuel to other countries.

A record 1.6 million barrels a day in U.S. refined petroleum products were exported during the first four months of this year, up 33 percent from 1.2 million barrels a day over the same period in 2007. Shipments this February topped 1.8 million barrels a day for the first time during any month, according to final numbers from the Energy Department.

The surge in exports appears to contradict the pleas from the U.S. oil industry and the Bush administration for Congress to open more offshore waters and Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling.

Pass this on the your RW friends that REALLY believe oil companies should be used to fuel AMERICA.

Another excellent post Raine, I sat in on an interesting session yesterday in which DC District Court Judge Royce Lamberth tried to explain why FISA is a good program and is working swimmingly. I stood up at the end of his presentation and asked "in light of Karl Rove ignoring a congressional subpoena and the administration's seeming stance of "do as I say, not as I do" what is the foundation on which we should place our trust in the ultra-secretive FISA courts?" Judge Lamberth's answer was not very convincing, but I did have to give him props for his good work on the Cobell litigation (the Indian trust fund case) - in fact, his rulings were so favorable to Natives that he was removed from the case Anyway, I confess that I don't have time to scroll down and read all of your entertaining and informative posts, but please know that I am thinking of you all and if I could I would send some of this beautiful Portland weather to you all. Take care :D

Barack Obama published in the Hyde Park Herald on Sept. 19:

Even as I hope for some measure of peace and comfort to the bereaved families, I must also hope that we as a nation draw some measure of wisdom from this tragedy. Certain immediate lessons are clear, and we must act upon those lessons decisively. We need to step up security at our airports. We must reexamine the effectiveness of our intelligence networks. And we must be resolute in identifying the perpetrators of these heinous acts and dismantling their organizations of destruction.

We must also engage, however, in the more difficult task of understanding the sources of such madness. The essence of this tragedy, it seems to me, derives from a fundamental absence of empathy on the part of the attackers: an inability to imagine, or connect with, the humanity and suffering of others. Such a failure of empathy, such numbness to the pain of a child or the desperation of a parent, is not innate; nor, history tells us, is it unique to a particular culture, religion, or ethnicity. It may find expression in a particular brand of violence, and may be channeled by particular demagogues or fanatics. Most often, though, it grows out of a climate of poverty and ignorance, helplessness and despair.

We will have to make sure, despite our rage, that any U.S. military action takes into account the lives of innocent civilians abroad. We will have to be unwavering in opposing bigotry or discrimination directed against neighbors and friends of Middle Eastern descent. Finally, we will have to devote far more attention to the monumental task of raising the hopes and prospects of embittered children across the globe—children not just in the Middle East, but also in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and within our own shores.

Just plain crazy talk?

New Orleans has the Rolling of the Bulls to coincide with the festival in Pamplona:

Hundreds of men, women and children, most in white with red scarves around their waists and red bandannas around their necks, gathered outside a French Quarter bar Saturday morning to be chased down Bourbon Street by members of New Orleans' roller derby league.

"Roller skates and a stampede through the Quarter —- what could possibly go wrong?" accountant Jason Medonia said.

The run, in its second year, featured 33 roller girls in horned helmets from teams with names such as Confederacy of Punches and Crescent Wenches.

A few minutes after the runners started, the skaters whacked their plastic bats on the street and took off. Behind them putted Elvis impersonators on motorized scooters.

Time for me to head off to the salt mine. I have to get in early today since we have a Knicks summer league game at 4 PM today?

I think the NBA created the summer league so players had an excuse to go to Vegas.

In the Moyers piece - one of my most favorite quotes:

A Native American grandfather was talking to his grandson about how he felt. He said, "I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is the vengeful, angry, violent one. The other wolf is the loving, compassionate one. The grandson asked him, Which wolf will win the fight in your heart? The grandfather answered, The one I feed.

Obama proposes bankruptcy changes

POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. (AP) — Barack Obama on Tuesday proposed changing bankruptcy laws to fast-track the process for military families, help seniors keep their homes, and protect people recovering from natural disasters.

The Democrat so accused Republican rival John McCain of repeatedly siding with the banking industry, saying, "When it comes to strengthening the safety net for hardworking families, he's been part of the problem, not part of the solution."

Will the New Yorker give equal time to unfair McCain smears?

The New Yorker maintains that the illustration on the cover of its current issue (right) is meant to satirize, not spread, the smears and rumors about Sen. Barack Obama -- that he is an unpatriotic Muslim with terrorist sympathies who hates the American flag..

I take the editors at their word and await the upcoming cover in which they give the same ha-ha-isn't-it-silly? treatment to the rotten things people say about John McCain: Say a cartoon showing him looking about 150 years old and spouting demented non-sequiturs in the middle of a violent temper tantrum while, in the corner, his wife is passed out next to a bottle of pills.

It's only satire, right?

Seems like a fair question. Sadly the McCain satire might never come. He is a maverick so . . .

Comment by wickedpam on 07/14/2008 19:40:28
The problem with the illustration is that people are visual all they will remember is the image of Obama in Muslim ware and Michelle in terrorist clothing.

Why do you hate privacy, Pam? Think of the lurkers.

I know ya'll don't listen to Howard, but someone on the show went to the war zone to entertain the troops two weeks ago. So, at one of the bases they visited, the US built a sewage plant; however, they built it too close to the base. When the wind blows, the smell of sewage flows over the base, 10 times worse than the smell of a cow or pig farm. Plus you need to add 120 degree heat to the mix. One can even see "particles of sh*t" floating through the air. So our soldiers are breathing in toxins all day long and will undoubtedly have lung damage at the very least. Then they will spend the rest of their lives trying to get veteran medical benefits. Jeebus.

I said it yesterday, that Satire needs to have an inteneded target, The New Yorker failed to point that out on thecover. Low information voters will think it is real.

THAT and the Article had NOTHING to do with the lies/satire on the cover.

With WorldNetDaily readers, New Yorker cover apparently didn't come across as magazine intended

Summary: A WorldNetDaily.com poll asked the website's readers to "sound off on the New Yorker's cover with turban-wearing Obama, gun toting wife," but while the New Yorker said in a press release that the cover "satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama's campaign," for a majority of respondents to WND's poll, the cover apparently provided support for their false perceptions of Obama's religion and patriotism: A majority of respondents selected the option stating that "[t]he image isn't too far from the dangerous truth about the Obama family."

I think it is doing exactly what they wanted.

<-------- NEW POLL!

And btw... I found this nugget: He is in California, it seems...

But the biggest news today will come when Fox News offers up its presentation of Election 2008 coverage, and divulges what new slanders it has cooked up to volley in Barack Obama's direction, after branding him a terrorist, advocating killing him and suggesting his wife is merely his "baby mama." Among those scheduled to appear are Karl Rove, who has joined Fox News as a "contributor" or "analyst" or "propagandist," whatever the channel's calling them these days.

Those who have been lamenting the diminished state of print TV-criticism these days need look no further than this panel for refutation: Last week, Rove ignored a Congressional subpoena to testify before the House Judiciary Committee, and yet, he's deigning to answer questions from the august body of America's TV journalists. If that's not clout, what is? (Alas, Mr. Rove will not be under oath when he answers our queries.)

Thanks for all the b-day wishes everyone. Celebration at home was a bit muted since the wife is losing her job as of today, but it's not like we didn't see it coming.

I spent a good part of the day Saturday editing some radio shows recorded on Thursday & Friday of one of the local overnight talk hosts making the rounds on the Boston area morning shows, Thursday it was an alternative rock station and Friday was on oldies station. My boss had an interest in hearing these as well since he can't get the Boston FMs where he lives in Maine. So I had them all edited and saved off on DVD then tried to load the alternative FM show back in Sunday night to make the mp3. File corrupt I then go to load in the oldies show , even though it looks like there's something recorded on the DVD nothing shows in the directory.

So now I'm rushing to do this again, but I need to leave enough disk space so I can try to record the SMS live stream tomorrow so I can hear the between hours patter. Show of hands please on whether or not you think

Sadly not much classical left in Boston, now that WCRB's been kicked to the curb outside the 495 belt.

That 99.5 signal is only a little more than a mile from where I work, it wreaks havoc with the test equipment.

If you're in New York, it would be even tougher since our NPR station runs mostly talk shows and has severly cut back their music programming. And when 104.3 flipped for Classical to Hard Rock (now Classic Rock) 15 years ago, that also thinned it out. So, the main Classical station is the New York Times owned WQXR.
