The Politics of Oil
Author: BobR    Date: 07/18/2008 12:44:09

The Republicans have been screaming lately about how important it is to allow offshore drilling. We buy too much oil from foreign countries, they say. Drilling offshore and in the ANWR would help lower gas prices. It's all about supply and demand.

Oh really?

The last issue is simple enough to address. Is there a gas shortage? There certainly was in the 70's. We had lines at gas stations, and some were running out of gas. After hurricane Katrina disrupted the underground pipes that deliver gas from New Orleans to Atlanta, we experienced a temporary shortage, with long lines at the pumps and prices temporarily spiking.

Have we seen any lines at the pump?.... Seen any gas stations running out?....

No.

That's because there really IS no shortage. The spike in gas prices is based on a spike in raw petrol prices caused by a spike in oil futures prices in the commodities market based on greed and speculation.

So why is there so much talk of drilling offshore? Because it's politically expedient. Like taking off one's shoes at the airport is Security Theatre, this is Gas Price Solution Theatre. It's meant to give the illusion that the Republicans are trying to do something about oil prices, but the Democrats are preventing them from saving the country.

Yesterday, in a move completely ignored by the media, the Democrats showed just how hollow the Republicans are with regards to drilling. They introduced the Drill Responsibly in Leased Lands (DRILL) Act, H.R. 6515, the goal of which is as follows (from Nancy Pelosi's website):
  • speeding the development of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A) by requiring the Secretary of Interior to offer at least one lease sale annually in the NPR-A.

  • reinstating a ban on the foreign export of Alaskan oil.

  • incorporating the ‘Use It or Lose It’ legislation, which simply requires oil producers to drill on the leases they already have or relinquish them so that another company can produce the oil there.

  • calling on the President to use the powers of his office to facilitate the completion of oil pipelines into the NPR-A and to facilitate the construction of a Alaska natural gas pipeline to the continental United States to move the product to market.

Notice the first item? it says the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A). Ignorant though I may be, I was not aware this existed. Apparently, we already have land set aside for drilling. So why do they want to drill in the ANWR? Does it have more oil?

No - the NPR-A has MORE oil than ANWR, is land that is already set aside for drilling, and is already 14% leased. That means that there's 86% of the land open for leasing and drilling by any oil company that wants to. I can't imagine why they wouldn't want to unless they figure that it's more profitable to not glut the oil market with extra oil.

The other provisions of the act would force oil companies to "use it or lose it", regarding existing leases for drilling. This would force oil companies to drill the land they already have leased, or lose the leases. Again - why aren't they drilling if they have leases? You already know the answer.

The DRILL Act would be a REAL solution to the problem, suggested by the Democrats. That's two strikes against it in the eyes of the Republicans, so naturally they are against it. The measure failed to reach a 2/3 majority vote, although it was still fairly close at 244-173, generally along party lines. In another textbook example of "projection", the Republicans attacked the Dems:
Republicans accused Democrats of again playing political games, saying the use of the suspension calendar was “all lip service, no leadership.”

"Another week has come and gone without the Democrat Congress taking action to lower gas prices,” Republican Conference Chairman Adam Putnam (R-Fla.) said in a statement. While Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) “insists on pursuing a purely political strategy on the floor of the House of Representatives, record gas prices continue to soak family budgets and leave municipalities in dire straits,” Putnam said.

More lies, more politics, less leadership... Is this the new platform for the Republicans?

To provide more evidence that the Democrats are trying to provide a REAL solution instead of Republican political theatre, Alternet offers The Three Biggest Myths About Offshore Drilling:
  • MYTH #1 -- 'DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW, PAY LESS'

  • MYTH #2 -- CHINA ON OUR COASTS

  • MYTH #3 -- 'NOT A DROP WAS SPILLED'
(read the detail at the link...)

If you have an hour and a half to kill, you can watch the House proceedings yesterday, thanks to C-SPAN. The twisted rationale and outright stupidity and posturing by the Republicans is in stark contrast to the Dems logical commonsense approach.

For a much shorter bit of amusement, however, here's Larry Craig telling us we shouldn't let foreigners "jerk us around by the gas nozzle"... :D

It's way past time to put the offshore and ANWR drilling myths to bed. The oil companies already have leases they aren't using, and there is land in Alaska already lined up for leasing. It's time for them to put up or shut up.

Things that are NOT ironic

An old man turned ninety-eight

He won the lottery and died the next day

It's a black fly in your Chardonnay

It's a death row pardon two minutes too late

And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day

It's a free ride when you've already paid

It's the good advice that you just didn't take

Who would've thought... it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly

He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye

He waited his whole damn life to take that flight

And as the plane crashed down he thought

"Well isn't this nice..."

And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day

It's a free ride when you've already paid

It's the good advice that you just didn't take

Who would've thought... it figures

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you

When you think everything's okay and everything's going right

And life has a funny way of helping you out when

You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up

In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late

A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break

It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife

It's meeting the man of my dreams

And then meeting his beautiful wife

And isn't it ironic...don't you think

A little too ironic...and, yeah, I really do think...

It's like rain on your wedding day

It's a free ride when you've already paid

It's the good advice that you just didn't take

Who would've thought... it figures

Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you

Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out

Helping you out

If birth and death are two states of the same being, it seems odd we would celebrate the one and mourn the other but new life is hope and passing is a reflection of time passed.

Ah, capt.....

You hit the nail on the head there about our forebears....

I'm playing my grandpa's horn; he's with me every time a blow a note through that thing.

And every major holiday when I'm baking the traditional Italian things, I can't help but think that in every Italian household in the world, there's somebody doing exactly the same thing. My mother taught me that stuff...but she learned at my grandma's knee...

Great post BobR - the topic is SO FRUSTRATING...

I only hope that voters will see through the Republican gimics and political game-playing as they did with the gas tax holiday. But it does worry me.

One piece of solid evidence that drilling in ANWAR will NOT lower gas prices - I believe proponents say that drilling there will increase production by 200,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

A few weeks ago, OPEC increased its output by 200,000 barrels per day.

Anyone see a decrease in gas prices? ... Anyone?... Bueller?

Don't know if this was posted on the blog yesterday...

For clues about who might be next to get a show on MSNBC, viewers need not have looked further than “Countdown” earlier this month. For eight nights beginning just before the Fourth of July, Rachel Maddow, the host of a program on Air America, the liberal talk-radio network, served as a substitute for the vacationing Keith Olbermann.

“At some point, I don’t know when, she should have a show,” said Phil Griffin, hours before he was promoted on Wednesday to president of MSNBC. “She’s on the short list. It’s a very short list. She’s at the top.”

At the moment every slot at night on MSNBC is taken, with David Gregory at 6 handing off to Chris Matthews at 7, and with Dan Abrams at 9 following Mr. Olbermann at 8. But some shuffling could be in the offing; Mr. Matthews’s contract, for example, is up next year.

For her part, Ms. Maddow, who has been a ubiquitous presence as a political analyst on MSNBC this campaign season, said she is ready whenever the call should come. To hasten that process, she recently hired Mr. Olbermann’s agent, Jean Sage.

Aside to Bob: Weeks ago (months?) when I was working on the "Rhythm" changes in all keys, you had asked why I would learn a tune in another key signature....

For some horn players, the original key signature is often too high or too low, or out of the range of a particular instrument, and it might make sense to transpose up or down to make it 'easier' to play. The rest of the group would also have to correspondingly transpose their parts so the harmony stays intact. ("Blue Bossa" being an example...I could never play it as written, so it was helpful to move it down a third so I could hit all the notes. I can reach the high A now...)

Or, you could be out on a gig, and a band leader being a putz might call for "Scrapple from the Apple" in D flat minor, or something. You better know how to play that...

Yeah, I get that. For someone like me that plays their own music or "rock", the transpose issue is not really a problem. It's really easy on guitar anyway, you just slide up or down a few frets (or slap on a capo). Keyboards, however, are more of a challenge.

Whelp, Johnny Wendell wrote me back... <_<. For those that were not around, I wrote a letter to him, regarding his seeing a woman at the store using food stamdp. This is the letter:
You were very very wrong today filling in for Randi

VERY wrong. you made assumptions ALL over the place about the woman in front of you at the grocery store.

WIC and Food Stamps are two different programs. Food stamps have nothing to do with welfare, and... BTW... welfare -- abolished during the Clinton Administration -- is now workfare.

For the last hour of the show, according to what you think you saw at a grocery store... you were outraged... a woman used food stamps while talking on an iPhone. You lamented the *Welfare State in America* was supposed to go away.

You are aware that the phrase *welfare state* is a Right wing catch phrase --- right? You perpetuated a stigma to all american's who DO NOT WANT to be on government hep. but NEED it. You perpetuated a stigma. You shamed people with your assumptions. That is not the progressive way. That is what the Right Wing Radio people do.

You went on to advocate for the abolition of food stamps. I heard you allude that people would be tempted to *sell them for drugs*

Food stamps are NOT just for the poverty stricken. Foster PArents... regardless of income status get Food stamps...

Food stamps are for people who need help. You forget to understand that we have WIC offices on our military bases...

You ASSUMED she had expensive manicures, Yopu decided in you own POV that she should sell her car. You told us that you knew what they were talking about, becuase you understand spanish.... Do you not understand how racist this sounds? Not just racist, but also elitist.

Assuming the older woman with this woman of being an Abuela... How the hell do you call yourself a progressive by invoking such presumptuous talk?

I listeneed to you today, and when at the end, you quoted Richard Nixon and attacked Section 8 Housing. I had to wonder where the hell have you been?

I listened to you filling on for Malloy and many of my favorite hosts... but you lost me today.

Peace, and Love,

Raine

Widespread welfare - food stamps and especially WIC fraud is a straw man - the stats don't support the claim.

There are actually very low numbers of fraud. There are many safeguards built into the system and Johnny is a college level radio host - what he is doing on national radio is beyond me.

His whole premise is based on his anecdotal experience at the corner store. Why would anybody even try to peddle that as "progressive talk radio" - it is a shame.

I vote with my patronage and will not listen to his show.

I used to have a good friend that worked for DCF. And, trust me it was hard to not make "Wendell_esque" assumptions. I would ask her "Well, why do the kids have Nintendo when the family can't afford food?" It took her really educating me about situations/mindsets that I knew nothing about it, before I got it.

Are there people that "game the system?" Absolutely!

But, there are a lot of families that don't! And, it takes real observation and knowledge of each situation to make the distinction.

Johnny Wendell? Do you know what happens when you ASS-UME?

One of the reasons Johnny struck a nerve in me is that after being a foster kid I went on to help set up some group homes. We ended up starting 3, one for runaway girls, one for infants and toddlers and one that was mixed.

They'd rather just drop the fuel off and let the vendor worry about paying for it the moment it's delivered so they get their profit RIGHT AWAY!!!!!!!

You too can hold sway over our elections, all you have to do is attack on command, er um I mean attack on your own volition right before the election, er um I mean at a time of your choosing. .

IT isn't just him tho, capt... it is all the people that are traveling. I understand that it is a large group, but there is a reason that the state dept doesn't make these trips announced.

So either he did this on purpose to fuck up alot of security details, or he just doesn't have the mind anymore to understand what is going on, he should know better, considering he keeps touting his national security experience.

The first place I called will not be getting my bidness. The other place, they said they would't be able to get back to me today, since it was in the afternoon, they might call tomorrow, as he is trying to get his repair guys to work tomorrow. Other wise they will call me first part of next week.

BTW, I don't have cable; does anyone know if there is a place to see/download "Countdown's" Worst Person In The World clips on a nightly basis? I know it's pretty regular on C&L, but I want to make sure I see if Keith tears Savage a new one tonight. Frankly, I think it's deserving of a Special Comment; however, I'll be satisfied if he "only" makes Weiner WPITW and does it in a VERY serious moment.

CHECK HIS VOICE MAIL.

Yep. That's my dad.

So thanks for all the good wishes and vibes. Sis will be there with the mom till dad heads for home early next week.

Meanwhile, in other news, John McCain is still an *ss, and DC is still the bombcity!
