Good Morning.

Today is our 1,966th day in Iraq.

We'll start this morning as we always do, with the latest casualty figures from the warron terra, courtesy of antiwar.com:

American Deaths
Since war began (3/19/03): 4131
Since "Mission Accomplished" (5/1/03): 3992
Since Capture of Saddam (12/13/03): 3670
Since Handover (6/29/04): 3272
Since Election (1/31/05): 2694

Other Coalition Troops: 314
US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 566
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 343
Contractor Casualties: 444

We find this morning's cost of war passing through: $ 542, 740, 975, 000.00

Turning to our friends at IAVA, there's an interesting piece today about what is essentially soldier's vacation time. For us civilians, we're usually entitled to a minimum of two weeks, sometimes more, sometimes less. Depending on your company, you might be able to carry some time over, others have a "use it or lose it" policy. The Pentagon has just changed the rules for our soldiers, allowing them to save more days and carry over more days. While it may sound like a good idea, it's also a tacit admission that the soldiers are being stretched beyond the limit and don't have any opportunity to use their earned time off.

General Casey, the chief of staff of the Army, makes no bones about telling anyone that will listen that the Army is out of balance. The troops know it - even those completely in support of occupying Iraq and all the mostly apolitical Soldiers doing their jobs each day. They feel the strain and I hear from many that, belief in “the mission” aside, wish the burden were spread more equitably. A message went out to the Army last month that really drives home the point that Army is being ‘rode hard and not put up - wet or not.’ It extends the amount of time that troops may save their leave days without losing them. The message is after the break and I’d encourage any deploying Soldier to be sure they understand it clearly.

Leave has always been a pet peeve of mine. Too many in charge see it as a privilege but that is not true. Leave is an entitlement - that means it is pay and can’t be captured capriciously or denied without cause. There’s a lot of talk about bonus payments and “war money” but for many troops a deployment to Iraq is a 200 day straight grind, a short break, and then another 200 day stint. Oh sure - there are screw offs here and there but for young leaders and hard workers it can be months of seven-day weeks and 12-20 hour days. If one were to calculate overtime on their actual work, the costs would be staggering. The troops get a little bit of a break on the way back but many are back in training and preparation for the next deployment with no chance for real rest. Equipment may be reset systematically but people rarely are.

Because of this, the leave days (read: vacation) earned may not be used in a timely fashion and are then summarily “lost.” That has the effect of literally fining troops for working hard and getting screwed. It’s good that the DoD is extending the time you can maintain your days but it is a real reflection of how many troops are stacking up this much unused vacation. Better late than never I suppose… (Pentagon memo available at the link)

Taking a peek at Afghanistan this morning, there's news that the Pentagon has quietly extended the tour of duty for a couple of Marine units. Of course, this was happening in Iraq all along, but now apparently our troops in the *real* war on terror are being stretched thin, too.

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has ordered roughly 1,250 Marines serving as trainers for the Afghan security forces to stay on the warfront almost a month longer to continue a mission that military leaders say is a top priority, according to a senior military official.

In addition, Defense Secretary Robert Gates has authorized the deployment of up to 200 other troops to Afghanistan to support the Marines. That includes eight helicopter crews that could be shifted from Iraq if commanders decide.

The senior military official spoke to The Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity because the formal announcement has not yet been made.

The decision to extend the tour of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment in Afghanistan comes just a month after defense officials told the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit that it would stay an extra month in Afghanistan.

According to the official, the decision to hold the battalion there longer is part of an effort to capitalize on the gains the Marines have made in the training mission. The extension means that the battalion would return home in late November.

Asked about Gates' decision, Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said the secretary was responding to a request from the commanders.

Gates "is always pained to have to extend tours. He understands the effect that has on the families of our forces, but he also appreciates our commanders' need to make additional progress while the weather is still good in Afghanistan," Morrell said.

Lastly this morning, there's another issue that's been flying under the radar. Every now and again, a particular type of casualty creeps into the MSM, whether it's lost limbs, PTSD, or traumatic brain injury. Here's something that's been scarcely reported on. War is loud. And 1 of 4 soldiers in combat has some kind of hearing loss.

The bombs along the Baghdad road exploded one after the other, leaving one soldier unconscious and another screaming from his wounds. Staff Sgt. Kevin Dunne's squad was under attack. Rifle and machine gun fire pinned them down. Then, shots from a sniper.

Dunne yelled orders, but he and his squad were at a disadvantage.

Dunne said he couldn't hear well enough to tell where the sniper fire was coming from.

"I had no idea," he wrote in an e-mail to USA Today.

In the four months before the April 7 attack, the chief physician at Fort Hood, Texas, had warned that Dunne's hearing was so bad that he should be removed from combat duties. Others in the Army overruled him and sent Dunne back to Iraq for his third combat tour.

Now, a member of Dunne's squad — Sgt. Richard Vaughn, 22, of San Diego — lay dead from a sniper's bullet.

"He was lying in the middle of the street motionless," Dunne wrote. "I blame myself a lot for not being able to identify the threat simply because of the way I heard the shots."

Hearing loss is one of the most common ailments that affects troops sent back to combat, according to the Pentagon and government researchers. One in four soldiers serving in Iraq or Afghanistan have damaged hearing, the Army said. In addition, a recent study from the Rand Corp. reported one in five combat veterans suffer post-traumatic stress disorder or depression. Back pain, leg injuries and other musculoskeletal problems are the top ailments of troops in the war zone, said Ellen Embrey, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for force health protection and readiness.

Dunne, who in Iraq was part of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood, is now back home. Besides his hearing problems, he shows signs of PTSD and has severe back problems.

After more than five years of war marked by multiple deployments, many combat veterans are developing long-term health problems, raising the risk that ailing troops are being sent back into combat.

Since 2003, 43,000 troops who were classified as medically unfit in the weeks prior to deployment were still sent to war, Pentagon statistics show. That number began to drop after 2003, but the trend has reversed in the last two years. Central Command, which oversees troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, is drafting rules that could make it more difficult to send unfit troops to war.

"As much as I wanted to get out there …, I'm seriously physically challenged by not being able to hear," Dunne wrote. "The guys to my left and right don't deserve anything to happen to them because of my personal pride."

So. Another week at war.

Bombshell: White House ordered forged document to sell war

Covering the book in the Politico, reliably Republican reporter Mike Allen writes:

A new book by the author Ron Suskind claims that the White House ordered the CIA to forge a back-dated, handwritten letter from the head of Iraqi intelligence to Saddam Hussein.

Suskind writes in "The Way of the World," to be published Tuesday, that the alleged forgery – adamantly denied by the White House – was designed to portray a false link between Hussein’s regime and al Qaeda as a justification for the Iraq war.

The author also claims that the Bush administration had information from a top Iraqi intelligence official "that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq – intelligence they received in plenty of time to stop an invasion....

...."The White House had concocted a fake letter from Habbush to Saddam, backdated to July 1, 2001," Suskind writes. "It said that 9/11 ringleader Mohammad Atta had actually trained for his mission in Iraq – thus showing, finally, that there was an operational link between Saddam and al Qaeda, something the Vice President’s Office had been pressing CIA to prove since 9/11 as a justification to invade Iraq. There is no link.""

Now can we impeach the SOB's!

AAAARRRRGGGHHH!

TriSec - great Tues post, as always. I had not thought about the hearing injuries - as you pointed out, not being covered. Thanks for posting about that issue. There's not only the personal loss, but the effect it has in combat - I simply cannot imagine.

No truer a phrase written - "War is loud."

Bill Press likes Bob Novak and Ron Paul?

It makes me a little sick to my stomach to hear so-called progressives fawn over liars, racists, opportunists and creeps. It says more about a lack of character possessed by Bill Press than anything he has ever written.

It is a money club. I read somewhere that the Forbes top 400 CEO's are all white males that all attended prep school and top universities (I think 99% ivy league)

To put it into some perspective - any of us could win the lottery and we wouldn't have enough to buy one of these guy's private jets.

One of us regular folks would have to win the lottery every year for about twenty years to even come close.

WASHINGTON - Federal and local authorities are girding for huge protests, mammoth traffic tie-ups and civil disturbances at the Democratic National Convention in Denver this month, fearing that the convention will become a magnet for militant protest groups.

Officials say that what makes Denver different than past conventions is the historic nature of Senator Barack Obama’s nomination, a megawattage event whose global spotlight could draw tens of thousands of demonstrators, including self-described anarchists who the police fear will infiltrate peaceful protest groups to disrupt the weeklong event.

The Secret Service is wary of discussing threats against the people they protect, but with Mr. Obama poised to become the first black presidential nominee, there are special worries. While law enforcement officials say there are no specific, credible threats against Mr. Obama, they expressed concern about low-level chatter on Web sites frequented by white separatists who spew hate about Mr. Obama’s race and what they perceive as his liberal agenda.

Speaking of Spanish: From Americablog...

AMERICAblog reader Jay writes us, and is correct, that McCain's English-language home page has a big "Country First" banner at the top of the page. No such banner at the top of the Spanish-language version of his site. I just think some conservatives might find that odd. Well, actually, some Latinos might too. Doesn't McCain think that Latinos put country first?

Another difference is that the Latino site has, right in the center of the home page, a picture of McCain lying in his hospital bed after being tortured in Vietnam. No such photo on the English-language home page. McCain also calls himself a "great hero" on his Spanish-language home page.
Pictures at the link.

okay, so you're thinking that your neighbors' routers are conflicting with yours if they're on the same channel? I doubt it.

Do you have yours set up for secure connections only? If not, you could have other people glomming onto your wireless and eating up your bandwidth.

Where is your router located? Metal can interfere with the signal. Maybe moving it would help.

Check the lights on the router when your signal drops out. Are you still getting a good internet connection? Are the lights for the wireless connection(s) showing connections and activity?

My dad used to smoke. I started when I was 16. My dad smoked Pall Mall filterless, so that was the first one I tried. That was pretty harsh... :puke:

Other smokers pointed out that I should be smoking Marlboros, so I tried those and they went much better. I went through a short menthol phase, but - like flavored coffee - I thought it was a strange combination.

I also smoked the occasional cigar.

I quit smoking cigarettes about 20 years ago, and never looked back.

Did you have a senior moment??

I agree with you about zoos, tho... I am mixed myself. There are some Zoos out there that are just cruel to the animals. I think it is important for Zoos to be research facilities to help protect animals in the wild. But I understand , I do. The history of ZooAtlanta is pretty crappy, from what I have been learning... Now they are world renowned for their gorillas and Orangutans. The idea is to one day be able to get many of the creatures OFF the endangered species lists.

But to sit and have the gorillas watch and us watching back... it is amazing. One of the momma's down here is a real pip. She has twins, and she is really funny. She never let's them get very far.

It's much easier to house animals that are from warmer climates....the poor things up here only get a couple of months outdoors, then they have to spent the winter inside somewhere warm.

I think that is why we don't have bears.

BTW... The panda in ZooAtlanta might be pregnant again! Let the PandaCam watch begin!

Zoo and zookeeping can be an art and the good ones are great for the animals and the human experience. Some animals are so threatened that we need zoo populations.

All animals - large and small are part of the big picture. I think we are just primates with car-keys and a bad attitude.

Obama: McCain's Not Running A Campaign To Be Proud Of

The harsh rebuke of the McCain campaign's tone and tenor comes amidst growing calls for the presumptive Democratic nominee to lash back. And it is a traditional Obama counterpunch: positioning himself above the fray while painting his opponent as trivial.

Indeed, earlier in the speech Obama offered a riff about the now-infamous Britney Spears/Paris Hilton attack ad -- a line he has used before.

"That's his idea of a really relevant campaign," said the Illinois Democrat. "But I don't have time to deal with that mess because America is facing some serious problems, some serious challenges."

If he stays on the issues we win. Period.

Then again.. this is a discussion debated HOTLY in my family. My mom doesn't understand that I try to balance the illness with the person and the degree of sickness.

For me it goes beyong my aversion of hospitals... When I am sick, I don't want to be social. On the other hand... When my Oma was in the hospital, having her grandkids around her cheered her up alot. But that is my Oma... not a distant Uncle.

Right.

It's hard growin' up!

Maybe our Moms are related? Maybe they are long lost sisters and we are, in fact, cousins, instead of twins, seperated at birth! :scratchhead:

My Mom and I had some heated debates about the Annual Mass, among other things, for your dead loved ones.

For 2 years after my brother died, I went to the "Annual Mass." I did it for Mom...my Brother didn't go to church and he wouldn't want me sitting in church "for him." But, I knew it was important to her. But then came year 3, when I said "Ya know Mom...I can celebrate Ray in my own way. I think of him every time I watch the Red Sox, or play a game of Pool. I don't need to go to church for him."

Holy Crikey! The Heavens opened! The Thunder and lightning came down!

It was not good.

But, now she is starting to get it.

She does still like to lay the guilt on. For example she will tell me that "everyone was asking about me" at some family picnic, or whatever. Yes, Mom...people ask how your kids are to be polite.

But, the truth is these people were never there for me. They are distantly ( 2nd and 3rd generation ) related to me by blood and they adored my Grandmother. That's it. There is no connection, other than biological. ( I am talking about distant family here. Obvs, my Mom and Dad and Nephew and Cousins are different. )

My friends, on the other hand. I would take a bullet for any one of them. And, they would for me. They've been for me. I've been there for them. They are my family and if one of them had so much as a HANGNAIL I would go and visit!

Cheney banned from GOP convention?

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Will Vice President Cheney be a no-show at the Republican convention in Minnesota?

Republican officials say yes, citing a desire by Sen. John McCain's campaign to turn the page on the Bush-Cheney years. One GOP official told CNN there's a "mutual understanding" between Cheney's office and the McCain camp that he is "unlikely" to attend the convention.

A second Republican official said there are still "talks going on" between Cheney's office and the McCain camp and both sides are "still trying to work it out."

The conservative American Spectator first reported Monday Cheney, who has low national approval ratings but is still popular among conservatives, is not expected to attend the convention...

Obama leads McCain nationally in AP-Ipsos poll

WASHINGTON (AP) — A new poll finds Barack Obama is leading John McCain nationally by 6 percentage points thanks to big leads he is enjoying among women, minorities and younger voters.

The Associated Press-Ipsos poll shows that Obama is leading his Republican rival 47 percent to 41 percent. McCain has a 10-point lead among whites and is tied with the Democrat among men, but Obama is leading by 13 points among women and has huge leads with minorities and the young.

The poll was released Tuesday following a week in which the two camps accused each other of bringing race into a campaign in which Obama is seeking to become the country's first African-American president.

For anybody that was getting worried?

Sorry to put a damper on the hijinks this afternoon...

China beats up two Japanese journalists

BEIJING—The beating of two Japanese journalists by police in western China drew an official apology Tuesday, but Beijing also set new obstacles for news outlets wanting to report from Tiananmen Square in the latest sign of trouble for reporters covering the Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee, which last week only partially succeeded in getting China to unblock some Internet sites after journalists raised a furor, said it would look into the new rules that require reporters to make appointments to do reports at Tiananmen.

The Japanese government and the Foreign Correspondents Club of China condemned the roughing up of the Japanese newsmen who were covering an attack by alleged Muslim separatists on police in Xinjiang province.

The separate incidents added to the impression that China is not living up to promises that foreign media would have unrestricted access during the games and has reverted to the tight controls that the communist government keeps over the press in normal times.

In the latest restriction, the Beijing city government said on its Web site that Chinese and foreign journalists who want to report and film in Tiananmen "are advised to make advanced appointments by phone." It said that will help ensure orderly newsgathering amid what are expected to be large crowds in the square on each day of the games, which start Friday.

The notice did not specify when the rule takes effect, nor did it say what would happen to news crews if they tried to report from the square without an appointment. Phone calls Tuesday night to the Beijing government spokesman's office seeking clarification rang unanswered.

In a post on the Wonk Room, Charles Territo, the director of communications for the Auto Alliance (which represents Chrysler, Ford, and GM, among others), notes some facts McCain should keep in mind:

• The Department of Energy estimates that 1.2 billion gallons of fuel were wasted in 2005 as a result of driving on under-inflated tires.

• Fuel efficiency is reduced by 1% for every 3 PSI that tires are under-inflated.

• Proper tire inflation can save the equivalent of about 1 tank of gas per year.

• Proper tire inflation also reduces CO2 emissions.

• Experts estimate that 25% of automobiles are running on tires with lower than recommended pressure, because people don’t know how to check their tires or don’t realize that tires naturally lose air over time.

OH! "It's OK If You Are Republican"...

And if you're gonna get all serious on me, I think I said the other day, I'm a registered Independent. I consider that the "Superbowl" mentality in politics is damaging our country pretty badly, the tendency to vote for "your team" because they ARE "your team", even in cases (like the current one) where "your guy" is clearly horrible for the country with nothing to offer but platitudes and failing memory.

I have some conservative positions (hate irresponsible spending, for example) and some liberal ones (hate poverty, think anyone who is willing to work should be able to have enough income to live reasonably, if not comfortably), and do my best to consider ALL of the candidates each cycle before deciding who I think is best for the country.

(To that end, I went to see just about every one of them speak near the end of last year. I am forever thankful that I live in NH and so have that opportunity!)

TriSec was a registered Libertarian beginning in 2000. (Although I never will vote against him, the last time Kennedy was up in this state I actually turned in a blank.) I was loosely involved with Carla Howell's campaign the year she lost to Mitt Romney for Governor.

I also took a very deep breath and walked down to my city clerk's office over April vacation this year and changed my registration back to "Democrat".

I'm not voting for Bob Barr; he never seriously was on my radar. (I supported Massachusetts native George Phillies).

But like capt says...this election is "all hands on deck". I'm a realist; Libertarians may yet have their time, but it isn't 2008.

I can donate to Obama (and have), I can work for him (and have), I can talk him up (and have) all while being registered with the state of NH as an Independent.

There's nothing I should be doing for Obama's campaign that I'm not doing now, but if (and I doubt this, or I wouldn't be advocating so strongly for him) he wins and turns out to be as bad as W, I like the idea that in four years I can be honest about that and vote for someone else if I think the need is there. I truly hope and pray that it is not, I hope that Obama does everything I think he will to return this country to where it should be.

But if I vote for Obama again in four years, I want it to be because I believe in what he's done and want him to do some more of it, not because I have a (D) after my name and feel some sort of party obligation.

I would be happy to have RATIONAL people running the country... in the mean time, I will take the dems. ... truthfully, I am a lifelong Dem.

While I know we NEED a viable third and even FOURTH party, we need to kill the strangle hold of the republicans. The easiest way to do that is to toss them OUT of power, then as a party, we need to make it easier to bring in third parties.

None of that will happen under the neo-confascist rule that our country is under siege from.

I love independants... but the very name, means that having a viable party is problematic.

Oh, Raine, now you've done it. You've broached my favorite topic, and now you're going to get the standard knee-jerk lecture, because I simply can't help myself.

What we need in this country is runoff elections and a "no winner without more than 50% of the vote" rule.

It immediately breaks the "two party" stranglehold on power, because a vote for someone else doesn't end up helping whoever you liked least of the main two. If either of the main two gets over 50% of the vote, your vote the other way wouldn't have changed that (as long as you did cast a vote). Suddenly, we can feel free to vote for the Barrs or the Naders or the Perots of the world, without feeling like we're defacto handing a vote to our least favorite.

It also allows for a vote of "none of the above" to have actual meaning. Under our current system, if "none of the above" takes 25% of the vote and the remaining two each take 34% and 36% respectively, the 36% wins, and anyone in that 25% who would have voted for the 34% candidate feels like they helped elect the other guy.

Do it with "instantaneous runoff", where everyone ranks the candidates in order of preference (omitting anyone they simply can't support at all) and decide ahead of time what your algorithm is for determining who wins a "runoff". If you get to the end of the list and you can't construct over a 50% majority for any of the candidates from among the votes cast, then and only then do you have to start over... but in that case, it's the right thing to do because clearly there's no candidate that the majority can even tolerate.

Don't know as it'll ever happen, but if such change comes about, it won't come from the Democratic or Republican parties (who stand only to lose), it'll come from Independents.

Who says Independents don't organize?

If Independents don't organize, where did the Reform party come from, or the Green party? Or the Libertarian party?

Meanwhile, at their worst ebbs, the Dems and the Repubs are still more powerful by far than most of the political parties in several European countries I could name, there's simply no reason why any of them will ever wholeheartedly support changing a system which virtually guarantees their continued power.

Not to say we'll ever get that kind of wholesale reworking of our system anyway, but I simply don't beleive it could EVER be done by Dems or Repubs. It's like asking the Giants or the Patriots last January to be the ones to champion a rules change that allows several OTHER teams to participate in the Superbowl as well.

Because you're still under the mistaken impression that independent voters can't organize, just because they don't choose to be part of a political party.

Look, just because I'm not part of a political party doesn't mean I never join ANY group. Why, my barbershop quartet would sound pretty bad if we never organized rehearsals and the like.

And as I said, although I'm an Independent, I've organized behind Obama this election cycle, and I'm doing as much for him as I've ever done for any candidate, ever.

I didn't say the other PARTIES would come from the Independents. I said the movement to change the system will come from Independents (and here I'm classing as "Independent" anyone who isn't part of one of the big two parties).

The parties will form on their own, and they will ebb and flow, gaining popularity when they're small and idealistic, ebbing popularity as they get large and bloated and corrupt.

But I still maintain that you're asserting that because someone doesn't choose to be part of an organized party in ONE part of their life, that this somehow means they're never going to be able to unify behind an idea or join an organized group in any other part of their lives.

It's the same universe in which it's possible for someone to be "a liberal" or "a conservative" instead of a mix of many different positions at different points along the "liberal<-->conservative" spectrum on various different issues.

It's not black and white, it's shades of gray, and I'd prefer you not try to assert black and white, because if you're going to keep doing that, there's no point in discussing with you.

I actually consider myself an independent progressive. My political positions have evolved more towards a moe European perspective and if you look at the US parties from a European perspective even the Democratic Party is fairly conservative. The Democratic Party would be considered a center or slightly center-right party while the Republican Party since Reagan and especially since the Gingrich "Revolution" the Republican Party would now be considered a far-right party.

San Francisco is already using Instant Runoff Voting which is how the Green Party candidat ealmost became mayor of that city in the last election.

I am also a democrat because the GOP has been winning. Simple as that. I would all caps and bold but I think I make an important point - the GOP has been winning. They are insane, hate filled, racists, criminals and they have been winning.

IRV, the future of more parties is all pie in the sky when 55 million well meaning folks vote for Bush for a second term? It could happen again.

We (indy's progessives, lefties, or democrats) haven't won much except the 2006. The 2008 is not won, not yet, not by a long shot.

Wow, touchy. Assert several times (even after I called you on it) that "Independents can't organize", and you don't recognize that as a tactic the "other side" has been using a lot?

I didn't say non-Independents can't think independently. But there is definitely a human tendency to identify with "our team", and we can see it in the extreme since 1992, when the Fox News/Rush Limbaugh/neocon cabal began demonizing the word "liberal" to the extent that there are a number of people who have bought into the idea that they are a Republican, even as they espouse values that far more closely match those of the Democratic party.

People like to belong to a group, and people like to believe in "us vs them". I've seen it at sci fi conventions, when you see a batch of people (such as myself) who have obvious psychological wedgie scars from high school forming into cliques and groups and loudly proclaiming that "you aren't a REAL fan, and don't belong here, if you don't watch anime" or "you aren't a REAL fan and don't belong here if you don't read Orson Scott Card" or... etc.

People who should know better, who know what it's like to be the "them" in "us vs. them" and yet they can't WAIT to do that to someone else the moment they have half a chance.

Since that is a core part of our make up as humans, it is easier to be willing to vote for a Republican if you don't have a knee jerk "oooh, ick, THEM" response when you hear the term.

Right now, I have that response, but I try to remind myself that it's not to REPUBLICANS, but to NEOCONS. My parents are classical Republicans, of the Goldwater stripe, they want smaller government and fiscal responsibility, but they couldn't care less whether two people of the same gender get married. And if that was still what the Republican party mostly stood for, I'd probably be voting for them a lot more.

XP is a better bet especially if the Vista is the "home" edition. That is the only version I have installed (on a friends unit) we eventually trashed the Vista and returned to XP - been running without error since.

FWIW

Well, it's Home "Premium". Whatever THAT is. I'll have to check after I scan in boxes of pictures.

I think the premium is a better piece of software. I found the exceptions to "home" (maybe it was home basic?) online - I think MS was going to pull it so it might not even be around.

With Vista (all versions) it is all about the drivers. Well, from my rather pedestrian perspective. I know very little about it so . .

It's okay to disagree, but respect for each other and the truth must be shown.

I'm sorry. I think I mentioned I have shingles again. I slept about 2 hours last night (fell asleep around 5:45 and have to get up for work before 8), so the combination has me a little cranky and possibly not seeing things correctly.

I probably took too much offense at the repeated meme "Independents can't organize", which was probably intended as a joke, but which in pain and exhaustion sounded more like a case of "I'm going to define away your position with clever semantics and then ridicule you for a position you don't hold", and when that's done intentionally, it's very much a right wing tactic. However, as I say, on re-reading, it seems clear Capt was having a little gentle fun at my expense and I read it wrong.

When I realized that I was A) probably going overboard, B ) not getting any sort of support (which helped me to figure out the first) and C) have only been on this board for about a week now, it seemed prudent to shut the hell up and go away, before everyone decided for me that it was time I shut the hell up and go away.

I'm dozing off as I write this as well, so I'm probably not making sense and will have to come back and apologize again tomorrow.

Sorry.

I just think it was a discussion on the meaning of being independent that got misinterpreted. I don't have any problems with independents, just Republicans especially the Bush/Cheney-loving neo-cons and their ilk.

Lifetime TV poll: Women say Clinton didn't lose because of her gender

A new poll of 500 women, conducted July 25-29 for Lifetime TV, finds that most reject the idea that Hillary Clinton lost the Democratic nomination over her gender.

For all the to-do about sexism, Lifetime says, only 21% in the poll said Clinton lost "because she is a woman;" 34% said she lost "because of the kind of campaign she ran" and 31% said because of "who she is and what she stands for."

****

I never disliked HRC I just never warmed up to her. Nothing she or her campaign did ever helped me with that indifference.

If Barack didn't run, who do you think would have given HRC a run for the money or would it have been a walk on for her?

I think Dodd is the most likely but it would never come as close as HRC vs. Barack.

Well, i take a general offence to that.

Republicans aren't bad, nor are they wrong, in their basic philosophy of less government. It's just a different mean to an end that if mixed properly with the general liberal idea that Government should control everything.

Who watches the Olympics? I mean...seriously. If it were the Super Bowl, i'd be a bit...concerned.

But the Olympics? When the thing airs, it's in the middle of the night. And no one sits and watches the thing front to back and eats chips and pork-rinds like it's the Super-bowl.

The problem with the Olympics is that NBC's coverage usually sucks. They tend to run those human interest puff pieces and then don't cover the events not to mention that they cover most of the events on delay so they can be shown in prime time on the East Coast. I remember when many people wanted to see CBC's coverage of the Olympics because anyone who sees it always says that its better.
