One More Day, One Day More
Author: clintster    Date: 11/03/2008 13:36:37

Well, here we are, ladies and gentlemen; one more day until the most important election of this young century. It certainly seems like it’s been the longest campaign ever. After some 21 months of criss-crossing the country, over two dozen primary and presidential debates, 57 primaries and approximately 1 million broadcasting hours worth of campaign ads, it all comes down to us. You and me. Our friends, family and neighbors. Joe the Plumber. Jeremiah Wright. All of us get to cast our vote and shape America’s path for the next four to eight years.

With that in mind, I thought I’d throw some factoids everyone’s direction, so you’d have something to talk about as you wait in line at the polls, or even if you’ve already voted and are Biden your time until your McCainical difficulties are solved. This column may Palin comparison to others you may see regularly in this spot, but all I have to say to that is: Gobama!

The Clintster pre-election primer:
• If Barack Obama is elected, he will be the first President born off of the North American continent. John McCain would be the first President born in a U.S. territory that no longer exists (the Panama Canal Zone).
• Barack Obama would be the first Democrat from a Northern state to be elected since 1960.
• Barack could be the first Democrat elected with a majority in both the popular vote and the Electoral College since 1976.
• If Barack scores a landslide victory, it would be the first for a Democrat since 1964.
• If Barack takes Virginia and/or Indiana, he will be the first Democrat to do so since Lyndon Johnson
• Regardless of who wins, come January 20th, there will be no one named Bush or Clinton in the White House or Number One Observatory Circle. That hasn’t happened since Jimmy Carter left office.
• Oh, and there’s one more little factoid: Barack Obama would be the first person of African Heritage to be come President of the United States.

Before I end this, I just want to share this little story with you. When I first met the future Mrs. C, she and I talked about a number of subjects, as two people will when they are interested in one another and want to get to know one another a bit better. Inevitably the subject of politics came up. We talked about the 2000 election, and she made a startling confession to me.

“I didn’t vote”, she confessed.

I looked at her in shock and surprise. “What happened?” I asked, sure that the answer would have something to do with being kidnapped by ruthless pirates, shanghaied to… well, Shanghai, and forced to work in a sweatshop turning out counterfeit Bush-Cheney bumper stickers. If only it were that simple.

“I didn’t think it was that important”, she protested, “and I was trying to get my Master’s degree.”

I teased her for weeks afterwards for being responsible for Bush-Cheney, even though North Carolina was not in play that year. However we should all take note that NC and many other states are in play, and regardless of how crucial your state is to the national election, you should take the time and vote for the local candidates you see as fitting to your interests. A good house is only as solid as its foundation. Vote early, vote well, and enjoy the thrill of tomorrow.

OK, I'll try.

Scroll down a bit to the "Comparison with 2004" section.

The tables below show the states John Kerry won in 2004 on the left and the states George Bush won in 2004 on the right. The states in both columns are listed in order of the Obama-McCain score based on the same algorithm as the map (i.e., the most recent week of polls). The states that are colored blue are the ones Obama now leads in; the red states are the ones McCain now leads in. As can be seen, Obama leads in all the Kerry states and some of the Bush states. He needs to pick up 17 electoral votes from the Bush states to tie and 18 to win.

I sure hope the nice old ladies can deal with the strain....we're on optical scanners, there's a lot of little desks to fill out your cards, but just one machine to feed them all into at my precinct.

I've allowed myself to think just a little bit about Wednesday morning.

I wonder, perchance, if this is what it felt like on election eve, 1960? I'm going to have to talk to my mother about that...she cast her first ballot for Mr. Kennedy that year.

I know we're mostly young'uns here, but are there any elder bloggers among us that might have any memories of the Kennedy administration? Even as children?

Ah wow.. Les Mis is one of the two Broadway productions I've had the fortune to see in my life so far. Gotta love Honors-level band/orchestra class trips!

The other, in case you're wondering, was Phantom of The Opera. Both were so excellent, so don't ask me to pick a fave!

In addition to losing the Presidency, House, and possibly the Senate, I'm hoping that McCain is so damaged that he'll have to retire as Senator and we'll never have to hear from him again. (He's up for re-election in 2010.)

Raine?

The New Republic reveals a lot more about that little scandal.

Sam Stein Over at HuffPo breaks it down quite nicely.
The New Republic published an explosive story Saturday evening detailing how John McCain, in all likelihood, leaked information to investigators of the Keating Five scandal that was designed to help his image at the expense of the other four Senators involved.

If the allegation is true -- and TNR makes a healthy case as to its veracity -- it would mean that McCain violated Senate rules and could have been expelled from that body.

"All five senators -- including McCain -- had testified under oath and under the U.S. penal code that the leaks did not come from their camps," Sahil Mahtani reports. "The leaks were also prohibited by rules of the Senate Ethics Committee; according to the rules of the Senate, anyone caught leaking such information could face expulsion from the body."

---- Personally I believe that John McCain will not run in 2010. Koz did a poll last week and found that if he were to be up for election THIS YEAR --- John McCain would lose.

Good morning, bloggers!!!

I hope that everyone is doing well.

On Saturday, I spent six and a half hours canvassing for Obama and local Democrats here in the Valley of the Sun. With a high in the 90s, let's say I got a very good work out. (I did not see a single McCain/Palin sign or sticker in the area I canvassed in - which was largely Hispanic. I guess the GOP is not very popular with several people in Arizona, especially when we have seen their stand on immigration and have Sheriff Joe "Round Up All Illegal Immigrants or Anyone Who Looks Like One" Arpaio in Maricopa County.)

By the way, here are the Daily Headlines which are still taking shape at this hour. (I did not do much yesterday on them as I was worn out still from Saturday and had other things to do.)

In some good news, I have a job interview for a FULL TIME 8th grade English teacher job tomorrow.

I have friends and a place to stay in Liverpool Nova Scotia, but with the right in charge north of the border, that's lost some of it's appeal.

Second choice: Costa Rica (family friend, helped Mrs. TriSec's family escape from Cuba).

Finland cons: Entire country suffers from Season Affective Disorder. Long winters. Speak a language too full of vowels.

Pros: One of the most wired countries in the world. Lots of English speakers.

Australia cons: Toilets flush backwards, seasons at the wrong time of year, amazingly fragile eco-system, lots of wowsers (see christian whack jobs), even worse record of treatment of native peoples than the US.

I am glad that I moved here, but if Obama wins tomorrow night, I can only imagine how good it will be to be in the multitudes at Grant Park. Chicago, if you thought that the 85 Bears were big and the Michael Jordan era Bulls were big, this will likely make those celebrations seem small.

You wanted to delve more into the detective, and I think you did... personally, You need not make her a victim or a martyr unless she was the entire story, which, based on the original one, she was not. I liked how she was drawn into the original story... it made it more clear, I liked how it ended.

One ending adds questions that can't be answered (or answers questions that make her a liar --she did say she would not leave her sister) . the other is just sappy...

But if I had to pick, I would pick #2. Personally I like the story as it is.

Did I go too rough? I hope not.

Thanks, i just worry that if i just end on the shot from Zacharia, it isn't an ending. or satisfactory one.

And with the introduction of Andrea, i'm trying to make it a two path story, about two people.

Boy howdy, my local NBC affiliate is putting on stunning display of incompetence. They had to rewind the Jeopardy episode, they had about 20 seconds of dead air on a local ad. Liv are they going to pay somebody for that?

You know what? I think you are on the road to a great series of Short Stories. I read them both... this is the kind of thing I can see as a novel.

Or a bunch of interconnected Short stories. (I prefer that) You have some very curious characters... ones that you can give stories about for a long time. I wish I was more educated in literature to give a fair review or assessment. but I read your stuff and I see a lot of promise.

It made me feel better about tomorrow. I think I had a little of the Mondo edgey feeling which is alleviated when we are around our fellow liberals.
