Stuff that'll make you ponder throughout the day!

Scary genetically modified, um, food? Pigs with Mouse Genes: How GM Animals May Be Entering the Food Chain without Labeling

On September 18, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration released guidance on a regulatory framework for approving the entrance of genetically modified (GM) animals into the nation's food supply. The term "guidance" is agency-speak for the law will look something like this. Put another way, the FDA has offered advice, considerably weaker than legally enforceable regulation. With the announcement, a 60-day period for public comment was opened.

The only GM animal currently licensed for sale in the U.S. is the glow-in-the-dark zebra fish, a pet. With the exception of a few drunk frat boys, this fish is not expected to be consumed by humans, and its need for warm water precludes any possibility of it escaping into the wild. But the glowing zebra fish will soon have some GM company in stores near you.

The new guidance is primarily directed at animals genetically modified for food-production purposes, but it's based on the approval process used for animals that are genetically modified for pharmacological purposes, such as pigs designed to grow human livers, or goats that produce insulin in their milk. Under the guidance, all GM animals, be they of the farm or pharma variety, will be classified as drugs.

End of the world postponed until this spring!

Supercollider shut down until spring

GENEVA - Scientists will have to wait until spring to use the world’s biggest particle collider for groundbreaking research because repairs to damage will run into the laboratory’s normal winter shutdown, the operators said Tuesday.

"Cure" for AIDS Stumbled Upon?

By Todd Heywood, RH Reality Check. Posted November 18, 2008.

Doctors in Berlin, Germany, are reporting that a 42-year-old American living in that city may have eliminated the virus from his body after a bone marrow transplant.

According to the Wall Street Journal report, the man was suffering from leukemia and AIDS, and while he continues to receive treatment for the leukemia, the virus has not reappeared in his blood in 600 days.

And I'll end with this: since pirates have made it back into the news.......

Jacksonville, not so much. I thought I caught a strong wiff of desperation and flop sweat when I was downtown at the spiff-reeny main lyeberry. I got a great pic on the way. Since I am basically feeling lazy check my mobile uploads on the Facebook. I looped back to get the picture.

From Obama's Field Organizer to help elect Jim Martin, , Corey Wilborn:

Jim Martin's campaign is sponsoring a bus from Jacksonville to Savannah Saturday, November 29, 2008. The time of departure will be determined by the number of volunteers for this effort. Please r.s.v.p. immediately if you are able to participate in this effort.

Jazz on the iTunes, brandy in the snifter, candles lit all around...

Mmmmmmmm. Good Sunday.

And now I sense that despite our local football entry, Dallas may be the most hated team on the blog, yes?

Dallas Cowboys! Slowly I turned! Step by step... The Sith, Mordor, Satan, and any other personification of evil all rolled into one. That is the festering, vile, sinkhole of pure evil that are the Dallas Cowboys.

Dallas is to football what the yankees may very well be to baseball... but worse.

Dallas is the root of all that rots.

When people rank about the Yanks, I say at least they are not the cowboys... America's team my arse.

I have a co-worker who loves the Cowboys, the Yankees and Duke Basketball - talk about the evil trifecta I tell her this joke every chance I get (it never gets old, to me anyway):

If there are two Cowboys in the car, who's driving?

Answer: The police

Thought that some in this crowd might appreciate it. :airhump:

Cheers,

I take exception the the Duke basketball comment. I mean they are no UNC but they aren't in the same league of evil as the Cowboys.

Mondo,

Here are a few more relevant things to consider - said co-worker has never set foot on the Duke University campus, has no discernable ties to the school, she just likes them because they are perennial favorites. She has a thing for Coach K (how does he get that pronunciation out of that mess of letters, anyway?) No slight to Poles intended

Cheers,

This is a syndrome I am well familar with. Rooting for school you have no association with. I will PM you Gator fan rant some time. It is very impressive.

Comment by livingonli on 11/24/2008 06:45:39
Maybe it's a good thing that I was a school not noted for its sports programs. In the New York area, there is very little interest in college sports outside of a few die hards and some St. John's and recently Rutgers alumni. I guess for me Saturday nights in the later months means Hockey Night in Canada.
