FUBAR

I'm a liberal. I'm a proud member of the Democratic Party. With that stated, I know I have bias and make no secret of it. The video and images coming from Kabul are really ugly. The story of how we got to this point is equally ugly. There is a general consensus that President Biden f*cked this withdrawal up. looking and listening to the news, it is hard to argue that point.

Let's go back a bit -- Back to the before times. Covid was becoming more than a blip on the radar in the States. It was February 2020.
The US and Nato allies have agreed to withdraw all troops within 14 months if the militants uphold the deal.

President Trump said it had been a "long and hard journey" in Afghanistan. "It's time after all these years to bring our people back home," he said.

Talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban are due to follow.

(snip)

The move would allow US President Donald Trump to show that he has brought troops home ahead of the US presidential election in November.

The deal also provides for a prisoner swap. Some 5,000 Taliban prisoners and 1,000 Afghan security force prisoners would be exchanged by 10 March, when talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government are due to start.

The US will also lift sanctions against the Taliban and work with the UN to lift its separate sanctions against the group.

In Kabul, activist Zahra Husseini said she feared the deal could worsen the situation for women in Afghanistan.

"I don't trust the Taliban, and remember how they suppressed women when they were ruling," the 28-year-old told AFP.
In other words, before negotiations began, FIVE THOUSAND PRISONERS WERE RELEASED. Among them? The founder of the Taliban who is now the de facto head of the country. It should be noted, that when this so-called deal was announced, it was covered scantly by the news networks.
This withdrawal of war correspondents from the field was compounded by a virtual void in diplomatic coverage last year. When negotiations by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with the Taliban in Doha in February 2020 reached the current commitment to end the US military role in Afghanistan, the three broadcast networks devoted a grand total of five minutes to the promise to bring America's so-called longest war to an historic end.

Five minutes! Such were the demands on the news agenda of the looming coronavirus pandemic in the early spring of 2020. Coverage of all other developments was eclipsed by COVID. The networks had long since given up covering the war as a war. The pandemic meant that they barely paid attention to the prospect of peace.
5 minutes. Just to put it into further perspective, Eric Boehlert tweets: Even GWB campaign strategist, Matthew Dowd agress that the media coverage coverage is over the top:

“George W. Bush is the one who should be lambasted the most in this coverage… The original sin of the problem we’re seeing unfolding and everything that’s happened in 20 years is at his doorstep. ”

He continued criticizing the media coverage by saying, “The voices they’re putting on the air are all the voices that got it wrong from day one. All of the voices they’re having on the air criticizing — most of them — criticizing Joe Biden are all the ones that got it wrong for the last 20 years. Leon Panetta, George W. Bush — he hasn’t been on the air but people around him — all of them got it wrong, so why would we listen to them related to the pullout?”

At one point Dowd added this:

Keep in mind one thing, Brian. 5,000 people, while this was going on, died of covid in this country. 500 people died of gun violence in the last week in this country. And not a single American has died on the pullout in the midst of this chaotic situation in a political hurricane, and I don’t think the press fully understands what the context is for the American public. So when you understand the context not only of Afghanistan but the context of what’s going on in our country, there is far worse crisis situations, including the assault on our democracy, that get forgotten about in the midst of this.

It was a terrible deal. November came and went and TFG guy lost an election, fomented an insurrection and prevented a peaceful transition to the incoming administration. While the media feeds off the bloodlust of what is happening in Kabul, they are not telling the real story:

It is ugly, It is painful -- but since the end of July over 30,000 people have been airlifted from the country. As over over an hour ago these are some more stats:

Biden didn't screw this up. He ripped the band-aid off of a festering infected sore, and as of this morning, he has saved more lives than anyone wants to give him credit for. That is what is really FUBAR.

F*ck the optics.

I just want to put a pin on this, especially when we hear from the media that our allies are pissed at Biden:

Greetings, comrades. Once again, "Boy who cried wolf" regarding the storm yesterday. Other parts of this Commonwealth have had a few trees down and some localized flooding, but nowhere near the gloom and doom the media spoon-fed us for several days previously.

So much so that a local news interview with a couple visiting from South Carolina (where they know a thing or two about hurricanes) said "We thought New Englanders were hardier than this. The reaction here was over-the-top for essentially nothing."

Our GM, who closed us down yesterday, issued a somewhat sheepish apology and boldly proclaimed "Back in full, normal operation today." I presume next time, fewer people will heed any such warnings, no matter how valid they may be.

President Kennedy once said that success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan.

The first story Raine posted is the one that should be re-tweeted extensively. Who created this disaster in the first place?

Yeah, they all have an "R" after their name.

Good morning, bloggers!!!

I am writing from Sullivan, Missouri as I head towards Amarillo for the night. I hope to be in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

We could have cut a deal with the Taliban to extradite bin Laden to a Muslim country. Instead, we had a generation long conflict as the Shrub wanted to be a wartime president.

I'm really glad for you all that it wasn't.

Honestly for a very long time it looked like it was heading straight towards Narragansett Bay and I was so worried that I ended up putting everything that could possibly fly around outdoors into the shed.

But then the storm weakened and broke apart and turned sharply northwest. It's been hovering over near my mom's house near Poughkeepsie all night.

Channel 7 right now is panic-mongering.

There's an active tornado watch for some smaller towns above the Mass Pike and Marlboro. they have a reporter on the ground looking at the rain and wind and listening to him, it sounds like there is an F-5 currently on the ground. There is not.

THIS HELPS NOBODY.

Oh, I forgot to tell you that we have something fun to report.

We're going to spend the weekend with my sister and BIL (and my nephew!) in Cape May NJ this weekend! It's the first 'just for fun/not family drama related" visit we get with them!

The week after that we are on our first full Vacation -- yes, to Florida. But it's Ft. Lauderdale and Miami, so I feel like we'll be among the not stupid ppl. Our friend Margaret is flying down from NY. I cannot WAIT!

I am almost more excited to hang with my sister. The two times I got to see her in June was for a funeral and to help out with my mothers medical stuff.
