He let a toe infection get out of control (and because of diabetes), so had to get part of his foot amputated. He ended up spending the next 2 years in a nursing home essentially confined to a bed while they dilly-dallied getting a prosthetic for him. They'd try, and it wouldn't fit quite right and then (it seemed) 6 months later they'd try (and fail) again. Ultimately, he died from a heart attack.
I think if he'd had money, or better insurance, or even family (or someone) to advocate for him, he might have gotten out of there a lot sooner... and might still be alive.
