Time for Fair Taxation.
Author: Raine    Date: 05/04/2009 12:21:43

This morning the President will be laying out plans to change the tax structure for U.S. Firms Overseas. It is a long overdue problem this country has and these reforms are needed. Corporations here in America, Such as AIG, Citicorp, Pfizer and others have long moved money offshore to countries such as the Cayman Islands in order to not pay taxes. It's all quite legal thanks to legislation passed a few years ago when another party had the majority.

The issue for me however is far simpler. Anyone who has listened to Thom Hartmann for any period of time knows that the government grants corporations the same rights a people. It would seem logical if that were indeed the case, they should bear the same responsibility under the 16th Amendment.

Even if that were not the case, the very idea that such major corporations are using tax havens to avoid paying taxes is obscene. I find it amazing that during the nomination process of Tim Geithner, people were apoplectic over his failure to pay taxes, and yet not a peep from the masses over the billions of dollars companies like Pepsi, Exxon, Dell and Dow Chemical are failing to pay to the government.

On April 15, thousands of people all over the country held their teabag parties, and not a single mention was made about corporations not paying their fair portion of taxes. There is a big disconnect here, and one that I hope the Congress along with the President will truly address once and for all. America needs revenue. That money cannot come solely from people like you and I. Corporations must pay their fair share as well.

I don't have a simple answer, and I will leave that up to those more knowledgeable than I to come up with one. It seems simple to me, if you do business with the United States, INSIDE the United States, you should pay taxes for that privilege. The right wingers are quite fond of telling us 'Freedom isn't Free' -- why would that be any different for a major corporation? They scream for the FairTax and never mention how unfair it really is for corporations like CitiGroup and AIG to avoid paying their fair share due to tax loopholes.

This doesn't even include companies like Haliburton and other contractors who are imo -- war profiteers.

Over 10 years, the US could recoup 210 Billion dollars if these proposals are acted upon in Congress. It's about revenue. It is patriotic to help cut the American deficit and get our country back on path. It is a good time for the President to address this issue as well. July 4th is coming up, and we will probably have a new round of teabagging, maybe these ill-informed folks can actually find a true issue to protest! One can hope, right?

:peace: and
Raine

Lessee....how about a Corporate Tithe?

Any company selling any product in the US (and that's the only qualifier; if somebody buys something within the 50 states or any US commonwealth or protectorate) then that transaction is eligible for say, 15% payment to Uncle Sam?

That would cover any and all companies doing business within our borders; it's based on point of sale, not location of corporate headquarters.

I like Ali Larter, but they have not given her character(s) enough development for them to be worth while.

And they really need a year jump here...cause honestly, the show hasn't left 2006 yet. It's a little annoying.

A year jump would be great (you should put that in the writer's forum on 9th in the General Disscussion section) then we would get some this established off screen.

I doubt I'd be the first one to suggest that idea.

What they keep leaving a story thread that can't sit for a year (the sylar being Nathan is a good example, or Nathan getting shot). Atually between 3 and 4 would have been a good time to have done it.

They need a sleeper thread that could wake in a year.

The problem is, that it seems to be breaking down pretty quickly. You need a better story that could stay quite for a year. Which is hard for Nathan/Sylar to do.

But i like the idea that the audience would think Nathan was really Nathan, and Sylar was dead, and we just see a Nathan breakdown throughout next Volume, and reveal that Angela basically made Sylar into Nathan (with suffiecent hints in this finale so it can be proven that the writers weren't just throwing a complete curve ball).

This shit happens all the time and never makes it into the press because the companies/government entities keep it on the down low. There is nothing like a cyber crime like this that will cause a big hit to the bottom line. So, companies handle this the same way they would the Somali pirates, it is a cost of doing business that prevents bad publicity.

Seemed like that conversation went down the wrong track a bit.

I wonder if what he said was true; that they can't strike Pedophiles from the bill as a protected class.

The Hate Crimes legislation is truly one I am on the fence about. I can see the validity in both arguements.

Comment by starling310 on 05/04/2009 17:55:17
My feeling on the Hate Crime legislation is that it's not a protection. It's a deterrent. And, in my opinion, deterrents don't work. It's part of the reason ( beside the moral question ) that I don't support the Death Penalty. If someone is going to kill a Korean, a Gay person, a Black person, etc. because they "hate" that class of people, tacking on extra punishment if they were to get caught, isn't going to stop them. That's just my opinion.

Talk me down. :-P

Comment by starling310 on 05/04/2009 17:56:59
Yeah, 9/11 was a "Hate Crime." Agreed. But, I don't think OBL and his lot would have sat around saying "I don't know, if we get caught, this is going to be a hate crime, so we will get 3 life sentences not 2. Hmm...maybe we should reconsider."

Comment by wickedpam on 05/04/2009 18:09:52
valid points. I've always believed if someone wanted to do something bad enough (good or bad) its not the deterrants that stop them. In fact I doubt they give them much thought at all.

Comment by wickedpam on 05/04/2009 18:58:23
understand, but you still have to live your life, you can't let set backs stop you from what you want to do and where you want to be. Take control of the money stuff - we all are having issues so you're not alone on this - do what you have to do to fix it. It sucks not being able to buy stuff or it makes you feel stuck but small steps maybe the way you help yourself out of any holes.

The weather, you have no control over it so find something inside that you want to do that will make you feel good. Its rainy and yucky here too.

I know it's a hard road to travel, but you have moral support out here Liv. You aren't alone

Liv.....make like those AA folks and just take it one day at a time. I had two months of constant worry just go behind me.

If I woke up, applied to one job, kept the lights on, and fed my family for just one day, it was a success. I'll worry about tomorrow when it happens.

I know work isn't all that you want it to be....but have you been seriously exploring all your options? I had a boatload of things that I might have been able to do (some of which would have entailed a career change), but the point is opportunity is what you make it.

Wallowing in self-pity is good for a time; it's a necessary part of the process. But you can't stay there.

I think the big problem I have is that I am alone and I don't really have a support network. When you live alone and more or less have to fend for yourself and being an emotionally sensitive person seems to make it more difficult for me to get back up when things come down for me. I used to have my therapist for a number of years but I haven't been to her since I was out of work since I could no longer afford to go. Then again it's not like I have the money to go out and date right now. Maybe if I had found someone a few years back, I would have at least the support network and maybe also a reign on the impulses as well which probably would have prevented me from getting into this mess in the first place. I just hope I can get a plan in place soon so that at least the ball starts rolling and maybe I'll even be motivated to get a second job to help at least for a while to get the money I need to pay off the debt and then I can get focused on the next step in my career.

It won't help you to look back in hindsite, liv.

When you see your doctor, you really need to tell her all of this. I am sure that she can help you find some kind of support group that will help you not feel so all alone.

We are here for you, but you must take that step and reach out and tell your doctor the issue. I do not know if they still have it, but years ago I had no money and was feeling quite the way you seem to be feeling now -- and I was able to get help thru Catholic Charities on a sliding fee scale. I am sure there are groups out there like that still.

It's not about finding the right person, altho I know the pain of being alone, it is about dealing and treating the fact that you are depressed. You may need medication to help, but having a support group will help. Reach out beyond just this blog, my friend, let it start with your doctor.

Liv, as somebody who has been going through an extended bad patch, I agree with Raine. It's not about being in a relationship so much as it is getting out of the house. It might not be for anything more than a walk around the block. It's why I went for the bike ride. Besides the health aspects, it got me out of the house for twenty minutes half an hour. That little bit of change of scenery can do you a world of good.

Since my doctor visits have mostly been for my weight/diabetes issues, but I can explain what's happening and since I can't afford to go back to a therapist the chemical option might be the option so that I can at least get some functioning especially if I need to get a second job.

Here is my idea for the next season of "24."

Midnight: Bauer sleeps fitfully.

1-2: Bauer wakes up goes to the bathroom, searches for the Ambien. He takes one, reads until he is drowsy.

2-6: Bauer sleeps like a log.

6-8: Bauer wakes up refreshed, goes for a run, showers, has a light breakfast, he stops at Starbucks for a latte on the way to his office.

8-12: Bauer sits at his desk, surfing the web, checking his email, talking on the phone about the Nicks game last night.

12-1: Bauer has lunch with his work wife. The laugh about what a douche the director is.

You get idea.
