Deja Vu and Nixon too
Author: BobR    Date: 11/30/2007 13:27:41

Everything old is new again. Clothing styles, hair styles, car styles... Apparently a drop in housing prices too. From this article:
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The biggest plunge in new home prices in 37 years was not enough to revive October sales, according to the government's latest reading on the battered housing and home building markets.

The sales pace for October was well short of economists' forecasts. The Census Bureau's latest report also sharply cut back on its earlier estimates for sales in August and September, when a meltdown in mortgage markets kept many potential buyers from getting the financing they needed.

Also depressing sales and prices was a record 191,000 completed new homes on the market that have not yet been sold.

Like that same time period in the 70's we also have an economy heading toward inflation and recession, both of which will likely be blamed on the president's successor. This got me thinking about Bush and Nixon. What other similarities do we have?

  • Nixon tried to help overthrow Pinochet's government. Bush tried to help overthrow Chavez's government.

  • Nixon presided over an unpopular war that used secret bombing campaigns. Bush is presiding over an unpopular war that uses secret (privitized) forces to do things the military is not allowed to.

  • Nixon started down the road towards privitization of medical care by supporting the private insurance company initiative. Bush by comparison is NASCAR driver on that road trying to privitize EVERYTHING.

  • Nixon said "it's not illegal when the president does it". Bush attaches signing statements to every bill he signs to show his contempt for the law.

  • The waning year of both presidencies were (are) marked with plunging popularity and scandal.

This article also gives a glimpse into the extreme secrecy of Nixon's world, yet another hallmark of the Bush Administration:
As a reporter who occasionally covered Richard Nixon's presidency, I was fascinated to see the latest "dump" of Nixon documents released Wednesday by the National Archives.

So far, the most interesting papers I have seen today are not about the Watergate scandal or domestic issues, but about national security. The new revelations would have made big headlines back then, but some people may now find this all a bit arcane.

Of course Nixon did do a few a good things, so there's one difference. One other big difference between then and now: Back then Congress had the balls to cut the funding for the Viet Nam war.

Congress also had the balls to consider impeachment. Nixon resigned before that could happen. Perhaps it's time congress grew a pair. I'd take resignation, if that's what it takes to get him out of office.

From that link (and part of this is VERY important):
But Huckabee is also something else: full-blown nuts, a Christian goofball of the highest order. He believes the Earth may be only 6,000 years old, angrily rejects the evidence that human beings evolved from "primates" and thinks America wouldn't need so much Mexican labor if we allowed every aborted fetus to grow up and enter the workforce. To top it off, Huckabee also left behind a record of ethical missteps in the swamp of Arkansas politics that make Whitewater seem like a jaywalking ticket.

All of which begs the question: If this religious zealot's rise represents the end of corporate dominance of the Republican Party, is that a good thing? Or is the real thing even worse than the fraud?

Comment by livingonli on 11/30/2007 16:00:57

I think this is important:

Huck turns that rhetoric around by saying, "We shouldn't allow a child to live under a bridge or in the back seat of a car." It's a brilliant innovation for a candidate like Huckabee, who recognizes that the only thing he has to lose by talking about poverty and high CEO salaries is the support of the big-money wing of his party — something he doesn't have anyway.

...

Huckabee also edges openly into class politics, criticizing his own party for harping on the supposed success of the overall economy. "The reality is, there are many families that really are working as hard or harder than they've ever worked in their lives, and they're not seeing that pay off," he says.

That's the same kind of message that Edwards delivers... So if it was Edwards -vs- Huckabee, those undecideds in the middle would be getting the same compassionate populist message from both sides. That could take a lot of wind out of the sails of Edwards...

Oh dear.

update... "A young woman with a 6-month or 8-month-old infant came rushing into the store just in tears, and she said, 'You need to call 911. A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape," witness Lettie Tzizik said.

There are several police officers positioned across the street from the office, crouched down behind cruisers with guns drawn, according to a reported at the scene.

"There are sharp shooters on the roof, and police are negotiating with someone in the building," said another witness, who did not want to be identified. "The police are notifying all the business owners on the street to evacuate. There are fire trucks behind the Hillary Clinton office.

"I walked out and I immediately started running, and I saw that the road was blocked off. They told me run and keep going," said Cassandra Hamilton, who works in an office adjacent to the building.

Nearby businesses have been evacuated, and the St. Elizabeth Seaton School has been locked down.

Clinton, who is not in New Hampshire, is attending a National Democratic Committee meeting in Virginia. Presidential candidate Barack Obama also has an office in Rochester, and it has been evacuated. There were no reports of any injuries.

She has to make her own way on something like this.

The reason I was rather cynical about it, is because it just seems so, so, so, odd. Plus she has staged so many things and the recent Zogby poll and suddenly this happens.

I don't want it to be true, I want to be wrong! I want everyone to be okay and safe and it all to end without blood shed.
