Take a look around you. They are everywhere. They've brought you coffee, cooked for you, cared for you. They've worked along side you. They love you. They make you laugh and they bring life into the world. They are sexy, smart and intriguing - even mysterious. Men have gone to war over them. In turn, they have stopped a few.

They're women, and today is International Woman's Day. From the White House:

In observance of International Women’s Day, and during Women’s History Month in the United States, the United States stands with people around the globe to reaffirm our commitment to the equality, freedom, achievements, and advancement of women.

From the global challenge of climate change, to a world that is not yet free from poverty and conflict, our challenges are many. Women are vital to the solutions to these problems, and we will not sow the seeds for a brighter future or reap the benefits of the change we need without the full and active participation of women around the world.

Worldwide, women play leadership roles in the health and education of our families, in our fields, our factories, our classrooms, our laboratories, and our boardrooms. With or without awards or acknowledgement, women have taught us about hope, about courage, and about opportunity.

The United States is filled with great hope that our daughters, and the daughters of all nations, will continue to serve as leaders in the pursuit of our collective well-being and have the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Today, Michelle and I remember, celebrate, and honor the sacrifices, talents and leadership of women around the world.

Nationally and Globally we have come so far, and yet have a ways to go in achieving equality. The struggle will continue until everyone is equal, but for today, take some time to thank the magnificent women in your life. Honor a woman in some way. Nothing that was ever great in this world was done without one.

Today, among the many women I honor, is one in particular. She is a beautiful young woman. She's my niece. She is 16 today, and while she has an entire life ahead of her, she has already made a difference by simply being strong, inquisitive and independent. She doesn't see black and white, straight or gay the way our parents may have. She's growing with a mindset that she can do anything she wants. She knows that she has the right to choose. I see in her a future once only dreamed of just two generations before her. We have come so very far but when I look at the young women of today and see what they do, it amazes me. They don't have the same hurdles that I did, or my mom or my grandmother. It's simply amazing. She inspires me. Happy birthday, K-Belle. Happy International Woman's day to you all.
