What has changed?

Good Morning.

In just about two hours, I'll be joining the masses heading for Artesani Park in nearby Brighton, MA for a camporee. Perhaps 7,000 other Scouts and Scouters from across the Northeast will be joining us for SOAR. If you're near Boston, you can too - it's open to the general public in a highly visible stretch of the Charles River Bikeway near Harvard Stadium.

But like I often do, I'll change gears before I get there. We're also camping in a major city, which is unusual for Scouts to do. I expect to have significant police and National Guard presence in and around camp for security and demonstration purposes. We are all Boy Scouts, so every single one of us heading for the site is going to have one or more backpack and daypack on our persons, which means it would be child's play for an unscrupulous person to walk in with something else.

Earlier in the week, I was listening to an old set of CDs in the car that I picked up at the Smithsonian ages ago. It's a series of historic radio and TV broadcasts of significant events. One of them gave me pause. I think it's well worth your time to invest the 8 minutes to listen to President Johnson's remarks on the shooting of Senator Kennedy (D-NY)

Except for the names, President Obama could have made that speech last night.

It's been 48 years since President Johnson spoke. What, in those ensuing years, has changed?
