Twenty Years Later

There has been a lot of chaos and insanity for the last 6 months that seems to be because of the last four years. I believe a lot of the problems can be traced back to the original 9/11. For a brief moment, the country was united in grief, anger, and shock, ready to stand together against a foreign enemy after a seemingly unprovoked attack. The unity didn't last long.

Republicans - always ready to milk an opportunity for political gain - created an "us vs them" mentality among Americans, trying to equate "liberals" with "terrorists". "Support the Troops" became the not-so-secret password that helped weed out the "turrerist-supportin'-libruls". Bush used all of this to springboard into Iraq, and Afghanistan was quickly forgotten (I wrote about this in 2009).

The playbook was written, and it's been used ever since: Get Americans squabbling against each other, and they (the Republican and/or conservative political and business leaders) can do whatever they want. This balkanization morphed from neo-cons to tea party activists to cultists for the former guy.

So here we are, with the 20 year anniversary coming up this weekend (we'll actually be flying home from vacation that day), and the nation is more fractured than ever. We are only very recently out of the longest war in American history, with fingers pointed in every direction to assign blame for "losing" it, despite it being lost the day we invaded Iraq. We tried to nation-build Afghanistan while our own nation crumbled under the weight of lost unity.

Hopefully, this anniversary will remind everyone that we are supposed to be the "United" states. I am not optimistic. Still - in an effort to remind us all of what we went through that day that has lived in infamy (even more so than the attack on Pearl Harbor), I will be reposting my 9/11 story.
