What's the Matter with Arizona?
Author: BobR    Date: 04/15/2011 12:30:52

In his 2004 book "What's the Matter With Kansas?", author Thomas Frank examines what happened to turn Kansas from a left-wing populist state to a deep red conservative one. In light of recent events, it might be time to write a sequel, with a focus on Arizona instead. By their actions, the leaders of that state might make one pause and question their sanity.

Non Starter.
Author: Raine    Date: 04/14/2011 12:59:52

Prior to the Presidents speech yesterday addressing the National debt, John Boehner gave a preemptive announcement, or as some clever folk have called it, a Pre-Buttle.
"..if the President begins the discussion by saying we must increase taxes on the American people -- as his budget does -- my response will be clear: tax increases are unacceptable and are a nonstarter," said House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) in a statement.
Well good for him, because the President didn't begin with tax increases, he laid that out in the middle of the discussion.
Worst of all, this is a vision that says even though America can’t afford to invest in education or clean energy; even though we can’t afford to care for seniors and poor children, we can somehow afford more than $1 trillion in new tax breaks for the wealthy. Think about it. In the last decade, the average income of the bottom 90% of all working Americans actually declined. The top 1% saw their income rise by an average of more than a quarter of a million dollars each. And that’s who needs to pay less taxes? They want to give people like me a two hundred thousand dollar tax cut that’s paid for by asking thirty three seniors to each pay six thousand dollars more in health costs? That’s not right, and it’s not going to happen as long as I’m President.

(snip)
Of course, there will be those who disagree with my approach. Some will argue we shouldn’t even consider raising taxes, even if only on the wealthiest Americans. It’s just an article of faith for them. I say that at a time when the tax burden on the wealthy is at its lowest level in half a century, the most fortunate among us can afford to pay a little more. I don’t need another tax cut. Warren Buffett doesn’t need another tax cut. Not if we have to pay for it by making seniors pay more for Medicare. Or by cutting kids from Head Start. Or by taking away college scholarships that I wouldn’t be here without. That some of you wouldn’t be here without. And I believe that most wealthy Americans would agree with me. They want to give back to the country that’s done so much for them. Washington just hasn’t asked them to.

Protecting a Piece of Paper
Author: BobR    Date: 2011-04-13 10:36:28

In Nov 2005, former president George W. Bush reportedly said the U.S. Constitution was just a "goddamned piece of paper". Although that has since been discredited, he has been recorded on record as saying that things would be better in a dictatorship as long as he "was the dictator". The assaults on our Constitution have been a constant thread in the fabric of our country's history, and it is a testament to the strength of that document and the blueprint for democracy that it created that it still survives to this day. We tend to focus on those horrid policies and legislation that curtail the rights of citizens (Jim Crow laws, the Patriot Act, etc.), so it's good to see those occasions when steps are taken in the right direction.

The Candidates. Part 2
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 04/10/2011 13:23:53

Today we look at an exciting GOP frontrunner for Pesident, Mr. Donald Trump, or, as he is known is some circles, "The Donald", and in other circles as, "That Crazy Mother Fucker That Cheated Me Out of My Land and Flirted with my 13 Year Old Daughter".

Donald Trump is of German heritage (original family name was Drumft) and born in Jamaica, the eldest of 5 siblings to parents John C. Trump and his trophy wife, Swedish model, Astrid Kjellsson who everyone called "Petey" for some unexplained reason.

Saturday Morning Feel Good
Author: wickedpam    Date: 2011-04-09 12:00:00

*sigh* It’s Saturday morning and I have no clue what to blog about. There’s so much heaviness out there in the world. Attacks on Union workers who at this point want to hold on to one main thing: collective bargaining - for in numbers we are powerful from setting base pay for a community to having safe working conditions. There’s Japan with the devastation from an earthquake and tsunami, and lastly - but still not rectified - nuclear disaster. At the time of this writing there is an impending threat of government shutdown, which will affect all of our lives in ways most don’t realize. Then there is the seeming willingness of the GOP to put all our lives and futures in jeopardy by defunding Planned Parenthood, Healthcare Reform, heating oil programs for those with low income, feeding kids who may get no other meal that day, or trying to steal the money that we have been putting into Social Security for a retirement its feels like we will never be able to achieve.

But again it’s Saturday morning and we need something lighter.

Accessing the Votes (UPDATED)
Author: BobR    Date: 2011-04-08 10:50:09

The drama of the common worker -vs- the Republican governor in Wisconsin took a peculiar twist yesterday. The outcome of the battle will likely be decided in the state Supreme Court, and that court has a seat that needs to be filled. After what seemed to be a very close race for that seat, the clerk for a predominantly Republican district announced that she entered - but forgot to save - the votes for her district. The new votes suddenly gave the Republican incumbent (he used to be Speaker of the Assembly) a 7500 vote edge, enough to prevent a runoff. Let's take a look at a few details related to this situation.

Bait, Switch & Bullet.
Author: Raine    Date: 04/07/2011 16:43:40

The 27th Amendment of the United States of America states:

No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.

So guess what? It's technically unconstitutional for Congress to not get paid for a government shutdown. Not that Barbara Boxer didn't try...

Back in February, Boxer announced she was introducing legislation to stop members of Congress from being paid during a shutdown.

"Failing to keep the government open because of politics, or because there's no will to compromise, is a failure of government," Boxer said. "If the government is forced to shutdown, members of Congress and the president should be treated like all other federal employees:
We should not be paid. And to take it one step further, we should not be paid retroactively once the government re-opens."

It's strange but true: Members of Congress get paid during a shutdown, even though most other federal employees do not. Also exempt from a pay freeze are the president, presidential appointees, certain legislative branch employees and employees either doing emergency work or ensuring an orderly shutdown, according to a recent report by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. The report noted that in the past federal employees were paid retroactively once shutdowns ended.

Boxer's bill passed the Senate by unanimous consent on March 1.[/quote

They're all the Same?
Author: BobR    Date: 04/06/2011 12:47:33

You've heard the claim... perhaps even said it yourself on occasion: "They're all the same". Democrats and Republicans are all the same? Really? Let's take a look.

In some ways, I suppose that's true. Pick any random politician and I'm sure you will find they take campaign donations from Someone/Some Company You Don't Like. They've likely voted on a bill in a way you disagree with. They've likely broken a campaign promise.

But does that make them all the same? What about on substantive issues that really matter?
