Fear Itself
Author: TriSec    Date: 05/10/2025 10:03:27

Good Morning.

Some thoughts for a Saturday.

This past week was V-E Day, marking the end of WWII in Europe. Yet another thing the First Felon wants to rebrand for reasons known only to himself.

Let us consider the President of those times. The years before WWII were very uncertain, with fascism entrenching itself in Europe, and Imperial Japan drooling over the resources of the Pacific.

America was in a peculiar place. We were badly wounded by the Great Derpession, and quite uncertain of what the future would bring. A calming voice could have the proper effect, and on March 4, 1933, he spoke these words.

I am certain that my fellow Americans expect that on my induction into the Presidency I will address them with a candor and a decision which the present situation of our people impel. This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days.

It took more than a decade from those words, but the United States eventually did weather the storm and emerged victorious. Our elders enjoyed the fruits of those successes; building lives, societies, technology, that made our lives possible.

Somewhere along the way...we lost our way.

We are now a deeply-damaged nation. Selfish, unconcerned with our fellow citizens of either the neighborhood or the world. New fascists are gaining power with each and every day, and the way they are hungrily looking at the resources of our neighbors and actively finding ways to seize those resources - well, that's channeling Imperial Japan, too.

Fear is growing in all sectors, internationally as well as domestically. A great speech by a well-thought leader would do well to calm the nation. Except - with our current leadership, this is the kind of speech about fear we'd get today.

The United States Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I've just received word that the President has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away.

That's impossible! How will the President maintain control without the bureaucracy?

The regional governors now have direct control over their territories. Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this government.
