Commander in Chief

Good Morning.

We've never thought about it here at AAV...but one could suppose that the President, even if he never wore the uniform, by nature of being Commander in Chief could make him a "veteran" of sorts.


We've had some presidents that were actual veterans - and some of them even saw combat.

First among them of course, is General George Washington, the one-time commander of the Continental Army. He got to command them again as a civilian after taking the first Oath of Office.

Ulysses S. Grant was the one-time commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, and won both the Western and Eastern theaters of the Civil War before taking his place in the Oval Office.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander during WWII, and of course, post war Everybody Liked Ike.

Several more were just "ordinary" soldiers, sailors, and airmen...among them Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, and George H.W. Bush.

Of course, the majority of Presidents have been civilians, and many of them have done plenty of good things, despite having never served.

All of them, however, share a common thread. There are two Oaths here to take notice of.


I, (state name of enlistee), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same;



"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."


Did you see the common phrase?

Today, in that same Oval Office that was once honoured, sitting in the same chair that many veterans have sat in - there is an abomination.

A true, unhinged, madman...on a par with the last days of the last global madman, a certian Mr. A. Hitler. The last days of the Fuhrerbunker have been characterized as "Gotterdammerung", which comes from the Wagner opera cycle, "The Ring".

After the posting of blasphemous imagery, and personal attacks on the Pope that would have gotten him killed in medieval times, some in his own party are starting to question Mr. Trump's sanity.

There are a limited number of ways that a President can be removed. Nobody in Congress has the courage or wherewithal to begin impeachment proceedings, not that it would go anywhere with the halls of Congress filled with loyalists and sycophants.

The 25th Amendment is the currently "preferred" method, but it is no easier than impeachment. The relevant passage is thus:


Section 4
Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.


Again - the stumbling block is the Congress. Nobody therein will ever take such a step to start this process, either.

What is left?

Seeing that as I write this (Monday, April 13) It is Thomas Jefferson's birthday. He might have a suggestion or two about this.


That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.


It's time.
