Benazir Bhutto Assassinated
Author: Raine    Date: 12/27/2007 13:28:27

Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide attack that also killed at least 20 others at the end of a campaign rally, aides said.

"The surgeons confirmed that she has been martyred," Bhutto's lawyer Babar Awan said.

::::: Original Blog Post::::::

The Senate Will Come to Order
Even though they are still out for the holiday's, the Senate is still blocking any possible Bush Recess appointments.
A nine-second session gaveled in and out by Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., prevented Bush from appointing as an assistant attorney general a nominee roundly rejected by majority Democrats. Without the pro forma session, the Senate would be technically adjourned, allowing the president to install officials without Senate confirmation.

The business of blocking Bush's recess appointments was serious. It represents an institutional standoff between Congress and the president that could repeat itself during Congress' vacations for the remainder of Bush's presidency.

In such situations, pro forma sessions also could give Bush some political cover on popular legislation he doesn't want to sign. When Congress is holding pro forma sessions and is not formally adjourned, a bill sent to a president automatically becomes law 10 days after he receives it — excluding Sundays — unless he vetoes it.

That could be the fate of two bills Congress passed last week. One growing out of the Virginia Tech massacre makes it harder for people with mental illness records to buy guns. The other makes it easier for journalists and others to obtain government documents through the Freedom of Information Act. The FOIA bill, for example, would become law on New Year's Eve if not vetoed before then, according to Senate Judiciary Committee officials.

In a year when I myself and others have been disappointed by the Dems, it is stories like this that remind me that they are making progress. So much has happened in a year, so many scandals have finally been brought to the forefront of America's consciousness. These were things that many of us blogged, and wrote about over the past few years, that always seemed to have fallen on deaf ears in congress and the media. A sampling of scandals, names, misdeeds and major irritations include:
  • Iran not having nuclear capabilities,

  • CIA destroying tapes;

  • Smearing of Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson;

  • Alberto Gonzales and his injustice;

  • Karl Rove, Scooter Libby, Harriet Miers;

  • Walter Reed Army hospital and the misdeeds by the pentagon of our Vets;

  • FISA and the Telecomms;

  • Dick Cheney;

  • Blackwater;

  • Larry Craig and the merry band of gay Republicans caught in hypocrisy;

  • Missing Nukes in the USA;

  • Global Warming Deniers;

  • SCHIP vetoes;

  • The War (that is an entire scandal with thousands of subscandals and illegalities)
The list goes on. Many of these issues have had hearings, many were obstructed and many are still to come.

With all these thoughts, I think it is very important that the senate is blocking any appointments Bush may want to sneak in. It seems that sometimes even if the process is to at least slow the bloodletting until reinforcements arrive, it is better than to do nothing or even everything all at once. We are making progress, and that has to count for something, The Senate is in session everyday, thanks to Senator Jim Webb, and that slows down the damage that Bush does. minimizing the damage is better than nothing.

The coffee and tea are ready, and today, in honour of the last Thursday of 2007, we have fresh New York Bagels , some lox, smear, red onions, tomatoes and capers. Enjoy.

:peace: and :heart:
Raine

Breaking News:

Benazir Bhutto wounded or killed in suicide attack

The situation is very fluid; the BBC website reports her as seriously wounded, but I just got an email alert that said she was killed.

Remember folks, these are our allies!

Comment by Raine on 12/27/2007 13:48:14
MSNBC is reporting she was killed.

Looking like Benigno Aquino all over again...

My god... my god. I am truly in a state of shock.

Comment by Raine on 12/27/2007 13:58:15
This was clearly an assassination, I am reading that she was at a Rally, with metal detectors, and all of the people were checked as they entered. MSNBC, also said that she was under the protection of Musharraff.

They hung her father, they murdered her.

Marcos tried this in the Philippines back in the 80s...the people had the wherewithall to rise up against him and eventually overthrew him. "People Power" and Corazon Aquino, remember?

It remains to be seen what Pakistan will do. But Marcos hever had nukes.

Comment by Raine on 12/27/2007 14:13:19
She was assassinated in the same Park where they hung her father.. :cry:
The unkempt grass at the site of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's hanging lay withered on Wednesday as Rawalpindi waited for his daughter Benazir Bhutto to bring her campaign close to the seat of power she is eyeing in the Jan 8 elections.
Thursday will be Ms Bhutto's first public rally at the famous Liaquat Bagh park since her return from more than eight years of self-exile in October and is expected by her Pakistan People's Party (PPP) to be a boost for its election campaign not only in this important city and nearby Islamabad but also in northern Punjab.

BBC now reporting this:

However, AP quoted a PPP security adviser as saying she was shot in the neck and chest as she got into her vehicle, before the gunman blew himself up.

Rudy is an opportunistic scumbag pig. HE has already issued a statement on his campaign website (of which I will NOT link)
ÒThe assassination of Benazir Bhutto is a tragic event for Pakistan and for democracy in Pakistan. Her murderers must be brought to justice and Pakistan must continue the path back to democracy and the rule of law. Her death is a reminder that terrorism anywhere Ñ whether in New York, London, Tel-Aviv or Rawalpindi Ñ is an enemy of freedom. We must redouble our efforts to win the TerroristsÕ War on Us.Ó
Maybe someone should tell rudy that it was an inside job... and so was Bhutto's murder. :rage:

The bottom line, a democratic leader was killed in a country that is under marshall law, that is considered our ally. We have thrown our support behind mushareff, all in the fight against terrorism ... and sent a message to the world, democracy is not really needed in fighting the war on terror. It is a sad time for the country and the world, I think. Terrorism trumps democracy. America, instead of supporting this woman in her desire to return democracy to pakistan, becked Musharraf, and that says it all. I am heavy in my heart today.

Good morning all.

This makes me really wonder about our "increased" role in Pakistan. Since Musharaff has probably a hand behind this, how in bed is he with the fundamentalists?

I have BBC World on the TV. For this story, the only options to really follow it our BBC World or CNNI and only a fraction of the US cable systems carry either channel.

Comment by TriSec on 12/27/2007 15:13:21
*grunt*

Doesn't seem to be much else to say this morning. Kinda glad I'm at work...I suppose I would have taken over the TV to stare at the coverage in stunned silence.

And you know, not that long ago we could look at the assasination of a foreign leader and say, "Gee, that's too bad. How can we help them recover?" now I look at it and say, "Gee, I wonder what Cheney had to do with this?"

The only thing is that may not have been what the former General had wanted.

Isn't it telling that we all run to the BBC whenever there's a world crisis?

Seems that we're hardly better than the two-bit dictatorships we're propping up around the world. Their oppressed people get the BBC for news, too.

So, when to we get martial law? I suppose I should map my route to the northern border again. Good thing it's snow season, it'll be easier to get across.

If the Republicans steal the election (especially if it's Ghouilani or Huckabee because they are the creepiest) and I am still not too sure about Hillary, I will probably reconsider as well. The only problem is Harper is not as welcoming as Trudeau was during Vietnam since Harper's politics are closer to Bush's. They have denied Iraq war deserters claim for refugee status although they haven't deported any of them yet.

And speaking of the BBC, Rupert Murdoch took BBC World off his satellite service to China at the request of the Chinese government. What does that say about him?

We send our condolences to the family of Benazir Bhutto, to her friends, and to her supporters. We send our condolences to the families of others who were killed in today's violence. And we send our condolences to all the people of Pakistan on this tragic occasion.

The United States strongly condemns this cowardly act by murderous extremists who are trying to undermine Pakistan's democracy. Those who committed this crime must be brought to justice.

Mrs. Bhutto served her nation twice as prime minister, and she knew that her return to Pakistan earlier this year put her life at risk. Yet she refused to allow assasins to dictate the course of her country. We stand with the people of Pakistan in their struggle against the forces of terror and extremism. We urge them to honor Benazir Bhutto's memory by continuing with the democratic process for which she so bravely gave her life."

Thom Hartmann has PJ Crowley from the Center for American Progress to talk about the situation in Pakistan.

No surprise here...

Oil prices rise after bombing

Oil prices also rose on news of the assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, which raised concerns about geopolitical stability. That news came on the heels of attacks by Turkish forces on Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq earlier in the week, which boosted oil prices by raising concerns about Iraqi oil supplies.

Quote by livingonli: This one anchor on BBC is pissing me off. He's interviewing a friend of the Bhutto family and he is sounding like a Musharraf apologist.
That would be a little like when I heard a few heads on MSNBC say that this will help Rudy's campaign. terristapologists. F*ckin' Fred.

all the dots are connecting now. Even the media is finally catching up. I pray it isn't too late.

Bhutto wanted to get rid of Al Qaeda. She was calling fro democracy. I am also reminded of *The Shock Doctrine*

Gas prices...

I ran across this photo the other day.

Never mind the plane, get a load of the prices on the Chevron board.

This was the crash at Burbank International in March of 2000.

Sorry for being AWOL during all this - there are several things at work that need to be done before the end of the year.

Considering the precarious balance in the Middle East, I wonder if this will be like the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand nearly 100 years ago that finally tipped Europe over the edge?

Reminds me of an ad I keep hearing, I think on Nova M.

says something like "it took a century to gas prices to get over a dollar a gallon and in only 6 years it's skyrocketed to $3 a gallon."

Comment by TriSec on 12/27/2007 18:37:51
I distinctly remember during the first Gulf War, I thought it was high when gas broke through $1.50 for the first time. It was under a dollar when I first started driving....my first car was old enough to need leaded gasoline (remember when that was "regular"?) and you could still buy it on the street.

Comment by livingonli on 12/27/2007 18:51:51
My first car was my dad's old '76 Nova which I got as a hand me down. That did need unleaded though.

I better go skip out for a bit. I have to buy a new hamper.

I think BobR may be onto something with this analysis. Sharif, btw, is asking for a boycott of the january elections, and is also calling for Mushareff to step down.

Joe Biden is being interviewed on HArdball. he is nailing a lot of things onthe head. I did not know that their are more pakistani's than there are Russians. he is calling for open and transparent elections. he just said that he sees very little evidence of any democratic movements in pakistan. :(

Hello. Just got back. A few interesting things flipping through the news coverage on the Sirius machine. I heard one BBC newsreader initially call Benezir a "Paki" before correcting himself to the correct term Pakistani. I think some of those older guys on the BBC might have that old elitist racism in them still. I was just listening to CBC Radio One and they were interviewing someone who talked to her two days before the assasination and apparently she was giving some faulty device which is supposed to disrupt any timers that might be on explosives and that she feared death from both the terrorists and people within the Pakistani government.

Do any of these Republicans follow what's really going on in the world or do they only watch Fox News?

Senator Russ Feingold's statement:

“The assassination of Benazir Bhutto is terrible news for those who support a stabilized democracy in Pakistan, both in that country and around the world. Bhutto was a brave leader who was beloved by millions in Pakistan. The questions surrounding her assassination should have direct bearing on both the future of democracy in Pakistan and the relationship we will have with a country that is so critical in the fight against global terrorism.”

Keith is doign an amazing job on this story, but that first woman, to me in my opinion was nothing more than a Bush apologist.

I have been watrchign TV all day, and at one point, Buchanan said something to the effect of the following: You go to war with the dictator you have, not the one you want.

He made Rummy look human. F*ckers.

Thank God for mindless TV. We happened to catch most of the 2007 World Series movie on NESN this evening.

Still makes me all tingly, even on a day like today.

Anyone listening to Mike Malloy tonight? You may need to break out the hats bigtime. He ran an excerpt from an interview with Bhutto conducted by David Frost on the Al-Jazeera English channel and this little tidbit fell out that only the Malloys seemed to have noticed. In this interview, she discusses threats on her life and she says that one of the people who has been trying to kill her is a Sheik who was responsible for the assassination of Osama Bin Laden.

Is anyone else out there wondering about that little tidbit?
