Iowa Huckabee
Author: BobR    Date: 01/04/2008 13:15:07

... or at least the Republicans there do. He won a decisive victory in the Republican caucus, sending Romney off to nurse his wounds. Thompson finished a surprising 3rd. Guiliani didn't even register on the scale. It was a result few would have predicted several months ago when Guiliani was the assumed candidate (with an endorsement from Pat Robertson), when Thompson got Rove's minions working for him, when Romney supposedly got the endorsement from the Southern Baptists (although that was later qualified as not).

The Democratic caucus results were less surprising, ending in essentially a 3-way tie, with Obama slightly ahead. Edwards came in second, and Hillary finished third (perhaps the only real surprise here). The other candidates barely registered at all. Sadly, the results prompted both Dodd and Biden to bow out of the race. Because of this, we have removed the Dodd link from our ad/endorsement strip.

For all of us watching, we got to see amazing speeches by Obama and Edwards. Both were passionate, heartfelt, and emotionally evocative. Both showed their respective strengths as orators. Edwards stuck to his "two Americas" theme, asking us to help him fight for the downtrodden. Obama's speech was more hopeful in focus for the future. Edwards might want to think about putting more hope into his speeches and tame down some of the guilt.

Huckabee preached to the crowd like a pro, showing how his years in the pulpit have paid off. He - like the Democrats - was calling for change, in some ways the same as the Democrats, and in some ways very different. As the pundits proclaimed - this year, the leading candidates from the two major parties represent real choice. It (currently) isn't Republican -vs- Republican-lite.

So just how important are these results? From an emotional point of view, apparently enough for so-called "second tier" candidates to throw in the towel. But historically? Let's see how recent Presidential winners faired in the Iowa caucus:

Jimmy Carter: 27.7%
Reagan: 29.5% (to Bush's 31.6%)
Clinton: 2.8% (to Harkin's 76.4%)
Dubya: 41%

Clinton's results especially show why it's so disappointing to have Dodd and Biden bow out so early. While there is always a lot of weight given to the Iowa caucus, history shows that it is definitely not the harbinger of things to come. There are still 49 states to go; the end of the race is still there for the taking...

Good Morning!

Huckabee is a total tool.

Mrs. TriSec had a question last night that I couldn't answer...why a caucus instead of a primary? Do any other states Caucus? Is there any advantage one over the other?

Never mind the unanswered eternal question why two tiny, white, rural, states get to go first where we might be better served by New York, Michigan, Ohio, or somewhere more....diverse?

Anyway, if our crack research staff has any answers for us poor unwashed simpletons, it would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, and in honor of New Hampshire next week, we've got some Stonyfield yogurt, Segways for everyone to ride, and of course, pure maple syrup!

Morning all.

Velveeta is happier than a pig in shit over Edwards coming in #2!! Last night she danced around her bedroom butt nekkid, scaring the hell out of the dog and cat, (while her wife paid her no mind).

Who saw Mike Huckabee's speech? Could you see him over the glow from Chuck Norris' TEETH. OH-MY-GAWD!!!! Those were some nuclear powered white teeth!!!!

I've heard crusty old Mike Gravel did not drop out after all contrary to what MSNBC reported. .

And thanks to the crappy weather and me going out yesterday, I think I am catching a cold.

David Bender on TRMS, regarding aged candidates:

Think of members of your own family that are the same age as some of these candidates...

Do you let them drive? Would you want them outside unsupervised?

And we're going to elect someone that old and put their finger on the button?

I heard an interesting snippet on the news this am...Huckabee and Obama are both the youngest of the candidates in their respective races. Are we getting a little bit of a 'youth movement' from both sides of the aisle?

As usual good opening blog, I've wondered why so much weight is given to ONE state when there are 49 others that still haven't spoken yet.

I just got of the phone with him for a post caucus vent. I am workign on getting SMcG ( ) to come on over and post, put, He knows I am posting this wonderful riff...

Here's my pinko Commie rant for the night.

I always forget how much I hate this caucus process, especially by the (surprise!) Democrats. It reeks. If you're voting for a candidate who has less than that 15% support in your caucus, you can CHANGE YOUR VOTE in order for it to count? Because otherwise YOUR VOTE DOESN'T COUNT? Shame on the party, shame on the voters who switch allegiences and shame on Richardson and Kucinich for endorsing Obama as their second-choice candidates. Are you running for president or aren't you?

Basically, the party has no interest in voters voting their conscience, because it only prolongs the process and involves more of the country. Instead, they'd prefer we wrap things up quickly, at the expense of candidates who don't have enough money to create national support.

And God forbid you have an interest in this country's future but work the night shift, wait tables or otherwise can't show up at 7pm. Retirees and white-collar professionals only, please.

Sorry for the rant. No one else I know cares as much about this stuff as you do.

Hope all is well...

SMcG has a damn good point. he's one of the best liberals I know, and has such a great grasp on the political process it astounds me.

This is what I said yesterday. I think people who let someone else dictate who their "2nd choice" should be are shills. If I was going to vote for Dennis, that would be that. And, it's not up to Dennis to dictate where it should go if he isn't viable.

Liv, just found out that the newspaper acually was the NY Observer... Everyone... check this shit out: Clinton Volunteer thinks Obama cheated...
She said that in the precincts, people don't have to show proof of where they're from to caucus, and she thought that lots of people must have come in from out of state to caucus for Obama.

"They don't have to prove that they live here when they sign in," she said.

She suggested that Obama's "persuaders" - the people responsible for poaching supporters of non-viable candidates at the caucuses - were campaign plants. "Their persuaders were official staffers, and they're not supposed to be," she said.

Why did she think that?

"Because they came on gangbusters and knew all their facts, and with normal people you just don't get that," she said.

Now, this may not be hillary herself, but I SERIOUSLY think the campaign needs to get out ahead of this. otherwise, someone like me would be inclined to think this was orchestrated by the campaign.

Comment by livingonli on 01/04/2008 17:27:31

From Chris Dodd's office:

Fellow Democrats,

As many of you may have heard, Senator Dodd has decided, after a hard-fought campaign that will be remembered for its professionalism, compassion and insightfulness, to withdraw from the race for the Democratic nomination for the 2008 Presidential election. Although Senator Dodd did not achieve the results in Iowa for which he had hoped, we all remain extremely proud of his tireless efforts to address the issues that are important to every citizen of Connecticut and of this great country. Senator Dodd was a vital part of the discussion on issues such as ending our involvement in the Iraq civil war, restoring our security, reversing the effects of global warming, and ensuring that all Americans have access to affordable quality health care. Fortunately for us, Senator Dodd will continue to fight for us on these issues in the United States Senate.

Please join me, along with Senator Dodd's family and his many friends and supporters, for a very special event to welcome the Senator home and to thank him as he returns from his Presidential campaign.

I've only been harping about this show for at least the past year. It is hands down, the best thing on TV.

Speaking of heroin.....if'n you want to see the best movie ever about drug addiction, imo (and since I see you enjoy The Wire) check out a movie called "Acts of Worship" the director - I believe she's directed an episode of The Wire.

Two books actually. My Boring Ass Life is culled from Kevin's blog, also called "My Boring Ass Life". And Silent Bob Speaks. Oh fuck, I'm being a fanboy! :thud:

The Knicks are in San Antonio tonight. Will it be as bad as when they played the Celtics a few weeks ago?
